The Atlantic Slave Trade: Crash Course World History #24

In which John Green teaches you about one of the least funny subjects in history: slavery. John investigates when and where slavery originated, how it changed over the centuries, and how Europeans and colonists in the Americas arrived at the idea that people could own other people based on skin color. Slavery has existed as long as humans have had civilization, but the Atlantic Slave Trade was the height, or depth, of dehumanizing, brutal, chattel slavery. American slavery ended less than 150 years ago. In some parts of the world, it is still going on. So how do we reconcile that with modern life? In a desperate attempt at comic relief, Boba Fett makes an appearance

Great video. Love the way you address how slaves were initially obtained. Even today, some people are unaware that African tribes would war with one another and those that were captured in the war, would become slaves after being traded to other countries in exchange for goods. Also, the scant 5% of the Atlantic slave trade that America held may have been because the Caribbean and Brazil started in the slave trade a good 200 years before America existed. America didn-t exist until it gained its independence from England in 1776 and that-s when most countries had begun to end the Atlantic slave trade. However, when America came up with the idea of -breeding- their slaves, it pretty much eliminated their need for the Atlantic Slave trade. They would simply take the strongest and healthiest of their existing slaves and mate them with female slaves to create children that would become slaves and when they grew up, their children would become slaves-and so on.

This whole video is basically saying: -Yeah white people inslaved blacks in america but there were other people doing it too! -. Nice try man but this video has tons of holes and half truths. You failed to mention all of the other places the europeans took over. Do you really think that the slaughter that happened to the native Americans was the only time the Europeans used that method? NO IT WAS NOT!
So its not so far fetched to believe that they did the same to certain parts of west african that were near the sea ports.

This is misleading. So called -black- people, -african-americans- were already here. We did not come here from Africa on slave ships. We are the indians that were reclassified as -african americans-. We are still being coloinized and have been indoctrinated to believe this false narrative.

2: 25 is a lie. Truth ( that some people dont want you to know) is that african kings didnt build prisons or mental wards instead the kings traded their criminals and undesirables into slavery. Sorry if the truth is shocking to you.

thanks for so much information in this video. however, I don't like the use of humor with this particular subject because humor gives it a light-hearted feel and there is NOTHING light-hearted about the history of racism.

I-d think the 40 million people enslaved through human trafficking is a hell of a lot more than the Atlantic Slave Trade. People tell the whole truth. Atlantic Slave Trade was tiny compared to human trafficking.

The number was closer to 100, 000, 000 and africans did not sell Arabs helped capture and sell. Europeans had guns Africans did not. Africans did not own land Land belonged to God > Lot of info incorrect.

Kings and Chiefs didnt spend time and money in buliding Africa prison systems or in mental wards. So the kings and Chiefs would trade their criminals amd tribes's undesirables into the slave trade

So did slavery precede and lead to racism? (Edit: because slaves of all races existed and were traded. Maybe West Africa had the cheapest slaves and that's why the West traded for them)

Am I the only one that had to use the settings to slow down the video speed? English is my first language but I find that alot of these videos from American speakers talk too fast!
