In which John Green teaches you about the changes wrought by contact between the Old World and the New. John does this by exploring the totally awesome history book The Columbian Exchange by Alfred Cosby, Jr. After Columbus discovered the Americas, European conquerors, traders, and settlers brought all manner of changes to the formerly isolated continents. Disease and invasive plant and animal species remade the New World, usually in negative ways. While native people, plants, and animals were being displaced in the Americas, the rest of the world was benefitting from American imports, especially foods like maize, tomatoes, potatoes, pineapple, blueberries, sweet potatoes, and manioc. Was the Columbian Exchange a net positive? It's debatable. So debate. Re

I don't think flowers or animals dying really matter that much. I mean don't get me wrong the slave trade and the destruction of native peoples is horrible and I can't imagine if that happened to me. But If they couldn't survive if humans come along then what is the point. Plants and animals are meant for human benefit, why should we care about them if they have no use for us.

Weren-t grapes already growing in the America-s before Europeans settled? I thought the Norse Leif Erickkson who may have been the first to land in what is now Canada described the land as having grapes suitable to making wine.

Don't forget about cacao and its sweet goodness, chocolate, as it also originated from the Americas.
While cacao is mostly grown in Africa and Southeastern Eurasia, the crop is native to Central and South America.

Probably our better, richer lives were necessary to slow and stop the ensuing impoverishment of the biosphere. And by stop, i mean we are currently trying to stop those effects from continuing.

I've been watching this series with my 8 year old and 5 year old during quarantine. Now every day they come into my office and say -our heads are hungry for John Green! -. Cute but also creepy.

Don-t mind me just making time stamps for myself

Why is that argument between the two John Green's something I would say/do? I shared it with my mom brother and they agreed. XD
