I'm not really religious, but lately I find hope in any reminder (religious, scientific, philosophical, anything) that the world and everything in it is temporary. Whatever comes after this - even if it's nothing - and even though things are on pace to get much worse first, there is eventually an end to the pain and fear that permeates life. I don't need to know when or how it will end to take a little comfort in the fact that it will someday.

The cycle of destruction and rebirth of the world reminds me of The Maxtrix, where the machines had destroyed Zion several times only to repopulate it with a few people chosen by The Anomaly after the meet The Architect.
And Mahdi is also the term that the Fremen of planet Dune use to mean their messiah, Paul Muad'Dib.

I mean it should've been obvious since Crash Course Religion episode 1, outlining the complexities of religiosity, but yeah Qanon is effectively a religion. In much the same way that Militant Antitheism is one as well. Kinda nice to know though that Qanon is more specifically an apocalyptic religion.

I don't believe the universe will let us die. Nor do I believe the universe will allow humanity to fall into a fullscape Ragnorak, Apocalypse and Armageddon. Humanity has been through many situations and we will live on on this earth, not as memories but as flesh, bone and blood.

As far as the end of the world goes, i think he got it right. It'll either end with the sun expanding and swallowing Earth, fire, or the earth being flung from orbit and ending it's life as a frozen ball in the deep space between stars, ice.
I also favor fire. A quick end.

That's also the poem that a Song of Ice and Fire (the game of thrones book series) is based on, with the dueling apocalypses of the return of the dragons (representing fire and desire, and the return of the Others (white walkers in the show, representing hate and ice.

I greatly appreciate this episode. This brings me a reasonable understanding of the feelings of the authors and followers of the time. While im not religious, I can see these types of emotions in my own life and the concept of religion doesnt seem so far fetched.

I was rather disappointed with the true meaning of the word apocalypse when I looked up the original meaning, which simply meant the unveiling (sort of) and the word Armageddon refers to the location Tel Megido.

Sorry, this observation came out of nowhere and is totally off-topic. but Devil's Advocate's red jogging suit made me think of Dark Heart from _Care Bears II. _
My brain's been in a weird place lately.

I know everyone is being like interesting and talking about intelligent stuff, but I just want to say how much I love the set and the graphics for this series. 10/10 the crash course team did amazing.

Epicurean philosophers also have an end of the world narrative. The poet Lucretius describes it in De rerum natura, in Liber Secvndvs (Second Book) 1144-1174 where he says that he universe has an end

An ode to Robert Frost
Some say the world will end in debt,
With taxes due and fines well set.
If not by bills that pile too steep,
Then parking fees will dig me deep.

reply

We assume the world is gonna end. We don't actually know. Its an educated guess, but just a guess all the same. We could be way wrong, or it could all just be a simulation to begin with
reply

You forgot one other option, trying to make it happen. There are Christian groups trying to make the Rapture happen by supporting Israel and persecuting LGBTQ and non-Christians.
reply

I know the earth will end, but i don't think it's something to be concerned about. I think we need to focus on today and how we live and relate to others.
reply

From what I've heard from scientists, the so-called head death of the universe will actually be a gradual cooling i. e. the Big Freeze
reply

Knows that the world is going to end like that’s a foregone conclusion that nothing can be done about. Sounds like quitter talk to me.
reply

The apocalypse will be marked by disorder, disease, and justice!
That doesn’t really narrow down the time frame very much

reply

i came here for motivation and inspiration, always. and this topic is good. lead us on, onto better futures. thanks John Green.

Small quibble at 5: 32
The beast is best thought of as the imperial power that Nero represents, rather than the man himself.
