I have a '79 GMC I bought for 800. It runs good, no suspension problems, the auto tranny shifts predictably but the fuel mileage in town not carrying anything is only 18 with the 350 cu in (not bad really. A southern truck, never seen salt and I put an Alabama antique tag on it. Just one rusty spot where it was scratched on the bumper. Now, many people didn't like square bodied trucks, but that I what I grew up with and I prefer them. I have a '90 Ford Ranger that has no rust, cost me 1, 800 bucks when I bought it with cash, 2. 3L engine, Mazda 5 speed with a fiberglass box on it, 22 around town and 26 highway with only 186, 000 miles on it, EFI (I wish it was normally aspirated because changing #3 plug you have to take apart the throttlebody which is a pain in my back ( literally. I'm 65, Don't drive much anymore, just around town. I only buy gas for it once a month, but the paint is in good shape, I sprayed bar and chain oil on the chassis to stop any unseen rust, but it gets me around just fine. I change engine oil, diff, and tranny fluids every year just for the fun of it! This keeps the moisture and rust dust out of the fluids than can ruin the drive train. The '90 Ranger is a square-body too, so I really like it. I even bought new Radio cassette players for both that can take a thumb drive, some Chinese knockoff that was the copy of a JVC in dash so I can listen to the real classic rock oldies we both grew up with. I am an Amateur Radio enthusiast, so the ladder racks each carries all sorts of antennas without drilling holes in the body - really neat! I dislike the new trucks efforts at streamlining the body - they look ugly to me and really cost way too much. 73's Scotty ( best wishes in Ham Speak.

I have a 6 Toyota Tacoma standard cab 5 speed manual transmission 2. 7 engine and I've got 243, 000 on it and no major repairs yet. Only front brake rotors and pads and tires and oil changes and wiper blades and gasoline. Oh and a new radiator and water pump and coolant bypass pipe and valve cover gasket. Pretty dependable vehicle. I ran it hard it's entire life. I never checked the transmission oil. Or rear end oil. Maybe I should do that. Oh I had to replace the windshield and right door glass that's it. It's my transportation vehicle I Love it so much that I just purchased a new one. 22 Tacoma SR5 4X4. Chevy v8 engines will run literally for ever if you have one of those t56 6 speed manual which has a reputation for being bullet proof you cant go wrong. I have a 1993 camaro z28 bought it 20 years ago with 50k miles on it when I just graduated high school I was the second owner. today it has 956k miles on it original engine and transmission. even the suspension is original except I had to change the. shock absorbers a few times but it still drives like its brand new has plenty of power. I had to change the exhaust cause it rusted out. and I had to change the optispark a few times but I upgraded that to a holley terminator and got rid of the optispark distributor.

Since 1991, all I've owned are 88-98 GMT400's. Thirteen of them to date and the two I have now are a '92 C1500 GMC Sierra 5. 7L with just 135, 000 miles and my work truck is a GMT400 Bodied 1999 C2500 with 167, 000 on the truck and just 2, 300 miles on the NAPA 5. 7 with 36, 000 mile 3 year warranty. All trucks built since the GMT400's in the GM lineup are, in my humble opinion, disposable trucks. Yes. there are always exceptions to the rule, but they're way more expensive to maintain and repair and repairs are more frequent. I'll stick with what works! Cheers! Zip

The best truck is the 1987 K-10 4X4 350 Chevrolet, manual transmission, manual lever controlled transfer case with manual axel hubs. These old Square Bodies were the best trucks that GM ever made and then they went flimsy, window motors mounted to buckling door panels, inadequate cooling, crappy rotary R-4 compressor, self abrasive break in differential lube to keep from lapping gear sets that never got changed, horrible junk after 1988.

I have a toyota Tacoma with 826k miles. No oil consumption. runs great. I bought it new in 04 auto trans 4cyl. Ac works fine. I've replaced the starter. the Water pump and 2 wheel bearings at about 475k. oil changed every 3k. brakes and tires belt and 2 rad hoses. routine maintenance at the dealership till about 600k. was heavily undercoated when new for ohio weather. not much rust. Still put about 70 miles a day on it. Gets 25 to 27 mpg.

I have the same truck f250 except It's a 2002 that I bought with 156k on it 4 yrs ago. It has a 5. 4 which I had replaced since it was shot with a used engine that had 70 k on it I also replaced the transmission since that was bad too and much other stuff along with all the body work. I have under 20k in it and that is much cheaper then a nice used truck or a new truck. I use the truck to pull my 32' Jayco J flight trailer

The problem is all they sell now is Chinese parts and the scrappers keep junking these things like no other and crush them in 2 day because of the weight. So hardly any are left, In the last 5 years so many of these trucks? GONE from scrapper idiots. They should of resold them. The TBI 88-95 Chevy GMC trucks are good because I can fix mine alot of times for under 50 Its crazy.

You won't find any Chevy truck that isn't total garbage for 2000. I live in Illinois and most trucks in Illinois are totally rusted piles so finding ANYTHING affordable without a million miles on it is hard.

I own a 97 K1500 with the 350 & I'm in the process of rebuilding the truck for those very reasons you mentioned Scott. It's my daily work truck & I plan to get another one this summer & do the same thing. It's worth rebuilding because it's still cheaper than buying a new truck. I'm in St Louis, MO & even with our weather you see a ton of those Chevy trucks on our roads.
