I would look for a new radiator if the thermostat is ok, as the thermostat is quite likely to fail and not hard to replace. Just need to put in the right one. That is because there are some cheap ones that do not have a small bypass to let air out. If that little hole is missing can always drill a 1/16 hole in the body of the thermostat to make it work properly. Just as I would put a check valve in the line of a ported vacuum switch for the timing advance as there are two different points to get vacuum for advance and if the ported vacuum switch lets air go between the two vacuum locations it can cause an engine to misfire. Just because a new part is installed does not always mean that the new part will function properly, as such switches are slow acting and not snap action. Meaning the vacuum that is in the carburetor gets sucked out by the manifold or the other way around. That should not happen, but it is one of the things I figured out is wrong in the design of the vacuum advance of many cars of older design.

Your fur baby on the Celica stole the show. On another note after working in the service department for around 20 years at GM dealerships where all your customers are engineers (Flint, MI) know everything and insist on driving GM junk that even technical assistance couldnt fix. It was very refreshing to take a job at a Toyota dealership. The mindset of the hardcore GM people was Toyota was junk, when in all reality it was the opposite. If you only knew how much of a stress relief it was working with Toyota customers with little to no problems to working with GM customers with major problems you would freak. Typical Toyota customer, Im here for my 90k service please. Typical GM customer, my new truck has a loud engine knock when I start it cold and my job was to tell them oh thats normal. Even more mind boggling was the retired GM workers that just has their benefits cut and for the first time in their lives bought a Toyota, that really blew my mind. Keep up the great work Scotty, your videos are awesome.

Scotty Im Automotive my whole life I live and breath Automotive, I have to say I really think your vids are great for general people, but I have to say I would have shown the audience always test thermostat in hot water first with a thermometer, to verify thermostat is functioning before installation. Its best and saves time, especially if thermostat is installed and doesnt function properly and causes engine to overheat again, This can happen. Then everything has to be redone again.

The cam shaft position sensor was the major problem my pt cruiser had among many others I drove 11 miles one time and some where in that 11 miles the car blew the riming cover gasket yet kept going once I got off the highway I bought oil and ot was pissing every where once the car was fixed I drove it a few more months and traded it I had put several thousand into that car my current Hyundai best car Ive ever had

scotty i have a question and i need your help. my 2001 Toyota rav 4 takes a while to shift to 3rd gear when temperatures are very cold. infact when the temperature scale is at cold before gradually going to normal it doesnt shift to the 3rd gear instead it stays on 2nd gear. how do i solve this problem? if i try to drive fast it just works the engine harder. please i need your input on solving this issue. thanks.

One thing you should let people know if that with that particular POS, be careful not to spill any anti-freeze on the pulley and belt. It causes premature wear and if the replacing them is crazy. Better to stay away from these. Water pump, power steering pump and several other items require engine removal (although there are short cuts) to fix. I tell everyone to run when they see these cars.

I boutght a fuel pump spark plugs fuel injectors it wouldnt start I used one of the machines that check the problem it said transmission control system and battery we changed the battery and radiator and it still wouldnt start. I just dont know what to do I dont have anymore money tried starting fluid didnt work fresh gas

Have never got the appeal of these. They never resembled an older car too me; they were just ugly, underpowered, and an overweight car for a car on the Neon platform (the front brakes and suspension wear out early. My uncle had one and was a mechanic and even he called them a PT Loser.

Thermostats are cheap pieces of junk. Ran my old 85 Chevy truck without one cause I got tired of replacing em. I know you cant do that on modern cars but it was a good solution to a recurring problem for the time. They just dont make things to last anymore.
