I was finally able to do this, and the problem turned out to be that the plastic material they made the wormgear out of, reacted with the petroleum grease to turn into basically a candle wax, which crumbled easily. Why Ford doesn't know any better than this (or care, or worse, I am pissed at.
Also, this did end up throwing off my speedometer calibration and I ended up having to run the car with the instrument panel coverglass removed, and I had to actually keep the fork on hand to literally remove the pointer and then press it back on while the car was running, but in park. And then I had to actually have my dad driving alongside me with our smartphones both on speakerphone to talk to each other in real time as I drove his truck down a dirt road at various speeds, to see if our speeds were showing the same at various speeds.
It was a very stressful thing, but also something of a great adventure. In the end I got it recalibrated right, but my whole scenario was vastly more complicated to get things right. And, yes, I did keep the needle pressed down to the zero point before removing it with the fork. I suppose I must've done something different in dealing with the whole speedometer/odometer gearbox assembly once I got it open to replace the worm gear.

So I messed up my speedometer and now I'm lost. I did what you said, by putting it all the way down to zero before removing the pointer needle, but then when I was inside the guts of the thing I moved the gears a bit, just to see it turning, and I think that fecked up the speedometer needle calibration, because when I put it all back together, now the needle doesn't move right. Either that or I put the needle back on too snugly, perhaps, and now there's too much friction to allow it to turn right, perhaps.
On the bright side, however, I was able to replace the burned-out backlight and warning light bulbs, as well as the odometer, which was my main reason for doing all this -- and you were 100% right, it was the crumbled worm gear.
Any advice on the speedometer would be greatly appreciated, still.

Hey man I hope you see this, I know this video is pretty old now. I have almost the same car, I recently did all this to my baby, I used cheap bulbs though and had a major power drain the next day, but I replaced them with a better set and so far so good, however, my odometer still isn't working, I've taken it back apart to make sure all the trash was out and that the numbers weren't somehow bound up, I can hear the gear clicking, it's just not moving the numbers. Let me know what you think if you can. Thanks, and I love the way the bulbs look too, I gotta do my heater controls next, it looks awesome with the radio I got for Christmas.

Hi Chris, I've been watching your videos for years. Just saw this video, my Toyota Camry XV10 Odometer is working but the speedometer speed showing is lack behind, for example I'm driving 100km/hr but it just show 5060km/hr or less, may I know what's the problem? Besides, the engine oil light is flashing even after I send for servicing, changing engine oil and changing new oil switch, may I know how to settle these issues?

Make sure to remove the pin stoppers that hold needle on speedometer and tachometer at its lowest point. Learned the hard way facing the center cluster upside down while working on the back.

If you're a honda fan, you've done this before. If you haven't the sensor is usually on the top of the trans, not the bottom.
