New Lexus RX: Better than the Germans?

This is the all-new Lexus RX! Mat s got his hands on this mid-sized Japanese SUV to see if it has what it takes to compete with premium German competitors like the BMW X5 and Porsche Cayenne. Well for starters, it certainly looks the part from the outside. Lexus has followed the latest trend of having the brand s name written on the back of the car, but sadly it s also accompanied by a number of fake vents. Along the side, the car looks pretty impressive, with a number of creases and bits of chrome trim. Then around the front, there may be more fake vents, but the large new grille is striking and impressive. On the inside, the RX is super stylish. Soft touch materials and leather are found throughout the cabin, and there's a decent amount of practicality to store your items. There s a big infotainment screen in the middle of the dash, which is pretty responsive but the system isn t the best. Similarly, the digital dial system is ok, but there are much better systems out there. In terms of engine choices, there are two self-charging hybrid options. The entry-level is a 2. 5-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine coupled with two electric motors to deliver 250hp. The alternative is a 2. 4-litre turbo petrol coupled with two electric motors to put produce 371hp. Alternatively, you can choose the plug-in hybrid car we have here. This comes with the same 2. 5-litre NA petrol engine as found in the entry-level, and the power output is 309hp. So the car looks impressive and is made of high-quality materials, but while the entry-level 350h starts from around 60, 000, the price can rise to above 80, 000 for premium editions of the 450h or 500h! Chad: I've Lexus ES300H, which has same engine as this Lexus RX. It's 2016 January model, and I've done 150, 000 miles on it and only thing I've replaced are tyres twice and brake pads - nothing else. Maintaining it through Lexus at 200 per year. I also appreciate the amazing fuel efficiency. Stellar in terms of looks and luxury.
10/10 would buy a Lexus again.
My friend, who bought Mercedes E-class petrol at same time, is always yelling at his car. So many unexpected breakdowns, poor fuel efficiency and reliability. The headlights are taillights are also of poor quality than Lexus. One headlight and tail-lights are also not working.

Hi Mat. I owned an NX, then I now have the (old) RX. Love the video, except. As i live in rural Scotland the paddle shifters are perfect for engine braking as no manual or auto box to slow the car down without using the brakes. Sooooo, when it's icy/snowy you can downshift and the car slows down. A great use for your useless paddle shifters. You're welcome: -)

Very curious to hear people thoughts on the styling of Lexus SUVs. My opinion has been that Lexus has had the 'worst' looking SUVs in the whole range of the market. Their dimensions just don't work well together IMO, always something off about them and they are the ONLY SUV I did not even consider looking at when purchasing my last 2 SUVs.
reply

No way would I buy a Lexus with a CVT transmission especially over a BMW.
You dealt with some of the drawbacks of the transmission without dealing with the elephant in the room: reliability of CVTs and horrendous cost of replacement. Not that many mechanics know how to work on them either.

reply

Lexus - in reliability blows away the Germans - no change. However, interior, Lexus has taken a step backwards each design cycle - this interior is lukewarm at best. The large screen is the same in almost all its vehicles, with a large bezel. Not impressive at all - a generation behind.
reply

The interior is betten then in it s German rivals? Nah, that s really not the case, especially not for more or less 100, 000 It looks blend, the screen and the drivers display look like they are 5-10 years old.
What s great is the under thigh support in the back!

reply

Ha, Japanese can never beat the Germans they only beat them in reliability. Give the Germans a few more years and they ll have better reliability than the Japanese Never compare Japanese garbage to German Germans make the most beautiful cars.
reply

I owned a 4 year old NX for a period of 2 years. Not a squeek anywhere. Solid and reliable like no other brand. Not as fun to drive as some other cars though but I never worried about it starting or breaking down.

Been waiting for this review! I have a 2016 NX, but have been needing a bigger vehicle since we have 2 dogs now and take a lot of road trips with them. I'll definitely be trading in for the RX.

Looks a bit like a certain type of whale/humpback, the front part, nose/head is too big and is too much. They should look at what BMW did with the X6 with shark nose, instead of a humpback nose.

The Lexus have durability over the years you buy them and you will have it for years and years it's a good investment, for bmw and other go to mechanics and ask them how durable are they!
reply

I think we need to shame the manufacturers more over the fake exhaust boom, they look awful! I see them everywhere these days and most don't even try to make them look vaguely convincing.
reply

Bruh imagine paying 108, 570 for a 4 cylinder car.
That s a brand new 2023 Honda Civic per cylinder.
Yes I know it s a family car. I own a 2017 RX 350 myself.

reply

I was thinking the car looks really nice but the second Mate showed that it had fake vents with the almighty stick of truth, puts me off the whole thing instantly.
