Change your car with Carwow: It’s time for a Toyota off-road showdown! We’ve got Mat in a classic Land Cruiser from 2002, and he’s going up against the all-new Land Cruiser through a series of challenges at an off-road course! The question is, will it be a walkover for the newer, much more expensive car! Let’s take a closer look Starting with the old Land Cruiser, it’s powered by a 4. 7-litre V8 that produces 235hp and 434Nm. It’s equipped with a 4-speed auto gearbox, and it has a number of features to help it off-road, including low-range mode, a central locking diff, and adjustable height suspension. As for the new Land Cruiser, it has a 2. -litre 4 cylinder turbo diesel engine, which produces 205hp and 500Nm. It comes with a high & low range model, a central locking diff, as well as an electric rear differential. The new Land Cruiser comes with a whopping 80, 000 price tag, whereas we picked up the old Cruiser for just 2, 000. So will the new car prove its worth You’ll need to stick with Mat and Sam to see for yourself!

The test seems to favour what can do simple easy tasks the smoothest and that’s simply not what you look for in an off-roading vehicle you look for absolute limits and the ease of making them better because no car stock that’s made to be enjoyable on the road will be really capable of anything. It’s like quads or quad bikes(depending where you’re from) right now how they tote the 800s and 1000s as the best yet in reality the 400-600 range actually goes through more because you put on big fat (not skinny) tires and with the reduced weight and just enough torque through the low range can absolutely blast through anything where as it’s not pretty and people who can’t ride won’t make it then the 800s and 1000s can do an ok amount but if they can’t go through easy hitting it harder doesn’t really make it go further because they’re heavy so you can’t use any technique it’s just hit it and sink. And no this isn’t just speculation I’ve went out and tested it myself because I was curious which path I should go. All that to say that new car won’t allow you to beat it senseless and push to the absolute limits down a narrow muddy rock filled trail it’ll either have it’s computer say no or it’ll break. Something big that they’ve done is made the bumper to absorb impacts in crashes by crumpling well before you can go on the trail you gotta rip it out and rigid up the front end because you need to be able to ram a slope often to bounce the front end up and over. It’s things like this that really matter not how well its traction Control kicks in on uneven ground lmao that doesn’t matter.

best part is 99% of SUVs will never see anything other than pavement, selling to white women soccer moms is how you make billions. If you sell to the demographic that doesn't understand money and just get things bought for them by their meat sticks you can sell anything for any cost. Look at Apple, Pinera Bread, Taylor Swift, Stanley and Starbucks. All overprice dog crap bought primary by white women who would rather die than be seen without one of these awful products since they only live to boast brands to build their self worth. Never EVER make a product for people who care about quality, that's how a company fails. Make white women believe they're nobodies without your product and you can charge what ever you want no matter how awful your product is.

The fake SUV style cars that hav replaced hatchbacks and to a significant factor, estates, are absolute gash!
They bring nothing regards overall comfort, nothing regards increased space inside, nothing in terms of economy (in fact significantly worse) yet they have crept widthways, increase the risk taking of drivers because they're more perched, massive tyres which are more money, and they all look the same.
I almost bought a Honda Cr-V, but just couldn't (a CX-5 was also on the list, so I got the Civic estate 1. 6 i-Dtec, Mazda 6 estate also very tempting.
Obvsly the cars in the video are more proper off roaders, they aren't SUVs, they aren't Sports Utility Vehicles at all. Certainly have their place, but people buy them unecessarily!

I’d never wanna roll down a hill that slowly as a default like if I wanna go slow I hit the breaks but I don’t want to have to hit the gas to go a reasonable speed. The old one is better the more computers ya add to a car the worse it is. It’s good for people who can’t drive but the better you are the more of a hindrance it becomes to have these aids the same way abs if you cannot turn it off can get in the way.

I've had the V6 Jaguar F-Pace First Edition, v6 LR3, V6 Range Rover Sport and now I have the LC Prado.
The Prado's D4-D engine is good, but for some serious off roading, I'd go for the V6 or the V8 for sure.
All my cars have been brilliant and never any problems.
Oil changes every 3'000 miles and a lot of miles.

Giving points for hill descent control is ridiculous. It was invented by Land Rover for the Freelander 1 which didn't have low range and was based on the Honda CRV which was based off the Honda Accord. Hill descent control is just blind ABS braking. Blind because hill descent control does not have eyes like a human.

Interesting but manly entertaining - but this NOT how compare 4x4's! Take them to -say - Australia or somewhere South America for 2-4000 km long affording and see what comes home in one piece. Myself the old L. C. lot closer to my heart - not to mention the price tag.

I think better comparison wuld be if matt drove both cars and then gave his feedback about how much confidence each car gives to the driver. Like really wanna know if the new v4 turbo engine feel sluggish and slow or is it on par with the old v8
reply

Why do you compare old land cruiser 100 and land cruiser prado It’s different cars! Why do you don’t compare old Land Cruiser prado and brand new land cruiser prado. Also Old Land Cruiser 100 and Brand New Land Cruiser 300.

Hey mat, this may be landcruiser for you in US, but this is actually Prado.
So it would be great to see if you could re do this with j95 series landcruiser prado diesel automatic against this blue landcruiser prado.

Have an 80 series 1HDT, still performs up with the new cruisers. Solid axels, coil sprung no electrics. Very comfortable, reliable, can service at home. Peak Toyota in my opinion. Greetings from Western Australia

hill descend control We've always had engine braking. Even if u say but these are automatics. The 722. 6 mercedes auto gearbox from 1996 had torque converter lockup in every gear. Those gearboxes will engine brake

ah yes - the old Land CRUSHER. Beautiful truck for the desert - not so great for forests and mountains. Entertaining vid all the same. I think the new 250 is impressive, just wish it had a bit more clearance.
reply

The new one is better for most, but the old one is better for those who are willing to work on it themselves or those who are in a 3rd world country with less access to parts and advanced mechanics
reply

i don’t care what yall have to do. but PLEASE get your hands on a ZR1X when they come out and race it against the fastest production cars. i’ll give you one of my kidneys
reply

I'd take the old Cruiser. Downunder the new Prado is stuck with a 2. 8 turbo diesel hybrid, it's wheezy, gutless, vulnerable to water damage and eats rear luggage space.
reply

please do a off-road with a 2007 landrover defender pickup full aluminum body and if you want the car you can come to afghanistan but please do something with that car
reply

hill decent the new car take too much time for the lod car the first one is good speed for going down anyone can handle that speed. for a 2003 car I give it points.
reply

Came to look down upon the new car, left surprised.
But I'd pick the old one any day anyways both are gonna break, one is gonna be way cheaper to fix

reply

Graeme needs a couple of offroad pointers. Since he prefers land rover he might not get offroad a lot since they usually break down before leaving the tar
