Don't you just love all plastic crap they install on undercarriage!

One Saturday I loaded up my 1998 Frontier with stuff to take 100 miles to do work at my place there; charging light came on. I tested voltage across battery terminals, and confirmed no charging. I changed into dirty clothes, removed alternator, changed clothes again, took alternator to the parts store and picked up new alternator, drove home, changed into dirty clothes, and went out to install new alternator. While away, lack of tension of belt caused water pump to leak. So I changed clothes, drove to the parts store and picked up new water pump, drove home, changed into dirty clothes, and went out to install new water pump and found that the fan clutch was faulty when I went to remove the fan. So I changed clothes again, drove back to parts store for 3rd time, got a new fan clutch, drove home, changed into dirty clothes again and installed everything, new coolant, bled air out of cooling system etc. So I found 3 parts wrong that I didn't know about the day before. I never did get away that day. would not like to be a mechanic telling a new customer 2 additional times that he'd found more stuff wrong.

The anti-corrosion pads (sometimes called battery terminal washers) on the battery posts may interfere with the battery lug seating properly (not down far enough) and hence the need for a battery post shim. I see this mistake from the chain auto parts stores from inexperienced clerks when they sell and install a battery for the customer they also sell them the anti-corrosion color coded post pads, which many times prevents the lug from seating all the way down, and when the posts do not seat you should remove the pads and seat the lug properly and return the 3. 50 to the customer. So then the lug gap created is filled with a battery post shim (so the lug doesn't fall off) which they can also sell to the customer. I think the newest top post battery plastic form factor does not properly accommodate the anti-corrosion pads.

2017 vehicle. it's due for a new battery. especially if traveling out of town. Cheaper than a rollback ride or waiting for a AAA battery roadside.
Life of battery has been shortened by that severe discharge. It will quickly get to the point it won't hold a charge. I'd guess battery has been taken out and recharged somewhere along the trip. Most think that as long as it has good voltage, it's good to go. low amperage gets them all the time.
TIP: Always have parts store load test new battery before you purchase. Same with alternators and starters. can save a lot of aggravation. Check all pulleys that serpentine belt touches for noise and change the belt while you have everything apart. preventative maintenance, instead of breakdown maintenance.

I have a Tucson diesel 2018. Great to see you working on these cars. Your approach is down to earth, logical, ethical and sympathetic to the customer. Excellent! My experience with Hyundai Australia was that they could not fix a computer glitch that when the car was on cruise control at just over 100Kph it kept changing down a gear or two every 15 seconds! I had just taken delivery of the new car and was trying to take it 400 Km to where it would be used. It took more than six weeks for them to get a fix from South Korea and although it seems to work OK it does not feel 100% right. At least Hyundai gave me a decent car of the same quality to drive during that time.

My in-laws broke down, 4 hours away from me taking their son to college. Told me before the car died, the battery light was on the entire time. Thought it was due to the battery just needing replacement but thought everything was ok because everything was still working. Well, it was also icy-rain conditions. Car died before the parts store closed, got an alternator, then took a nice 6 hour drive due to weather to swap an alternator, they were at least towed to a shop, but naturally, shops don't operate at night. Nothing worse than breaking down and having nothing around.

Oh I remember when I was full time taking a 4-day weekend left me more work than I could hope to catch up on in 2 weeks. Eric, you are a rare breed please charge accordingly Your body will not last forever and there are plenty of good mechanics that can handle the basics You will never have a lack of work and can charge at least 200/hr for your(personal) time Keep serving the community through your business BUT get paid right for your time. I only wish I would have done this sooner

I can tell you why the shim was in there. As a guy that works at an auto parts store (not in the zone) the guy was to lazy to try and take the time to spread the terminal open and couldn't get it tight so she threw a shim on hoping customer wouldn't notice it wasn't on properly. We had the same thing happen at the zone in my area also. customer got a brand new battery there. Came to see us the next day having same charging issues.

Great video Mr O thank you for sharing with us all. Love your vids they are no nonsense, honest and great content: ) I did though note you slightly disappointed me in this one. Unless done it off camera you didnt put the little red and green felt things back on around the battery terminals: P hahaha. Keep safe and well everyone. Thank you Mr O for all your time and efforts it is greatly appreciated: )

Mother has a santafe, burned more oil then a 20 year old car. Dealership said it was completely normal for them to burn a half quart in 1000 miles. Went through a cat, and fought hyundai corp over the whole issue. Hyundai ended up swapping the engine and we got rid of the car. I'd be that Hyundai you have is low on oil. Oh and our car only has 75k on it running full synthetic

Had alternator going out one time. First indication was my dash dials were all getting weird, just before vehicle shut down. I guess when alternator goes, the vehicle depends on the battery which drains it. Seems like so many newer vehicles just not made to work on. So many parts require a lot of removal to get to. Vans seem the worst?

The problem with newer cars is the bigger the engine size or the more accessories attached makes it impossible for the home DIY mechanic to do a lot of his own work. I think that is made that way is intentional by the car manufacture so he/she has to go to the dealer or shop to have a majority of the work preformed.

My off topic concerns: Oregon just passed a law, possession of high capacity firearm magazines, empty or full exceeding 10 rounds, will result in jail time and significant fines. However possession of Heroin, Meth, Fentanyl misdemeanor no arrest 100 citation. Litter 6, 250 up to year in jail 6, 250 fine.

Taking a week off from an auto repair shop must be nice. Shop I work at the only days we close for are weekends (we work at least one Saturday a month, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas day. Letting the battery drop below 9 volts is asking for trouble. I have seen many modules fail due to low voltages.
