I retired after 30 years in the Navy. Tried the whole retirement thing but found I needed a reason to get up. A long time friend of mine has owned his machine/engine shop for 45 years. He's 67 and still works 16 hour days at least a couple times per week with all the business. People send him stuff from all over the country because there's not many like him around who are truly old school. He only had another guy working for him and he exclusively does the heads. He needed someone to be a go-fer so he could just concentrate on engines and not ordering parts, running for supplies etc. He hired me and I've been doing it now for 2 years. The amount of knowledge he and his ilk have is amazing. I've learned through doing now and really enjoy getting dirty and picking his brain. Although we specialize in vintage American iron. we still have a fair amount of business from dealers and indy's so see a lot of Subies/BMW's etc. Guys like that just get stuff done. It's not what they do. it's who they are and it IS difficult for them to give it up. I don't see Gary retiring anytime soon. I literally think he'll do it as long as he can physically handle it.

Older Gentlemen like that guy are an endangered species. They've seen it all. When he is cutting the Valve you can hear the wobble. Carbon on the Exhaust stems is almost always the guides. I'd bet she drove it for a while after the Dealer bent the valves. The bent valves would eat the guides and cover up the witness marks in the pistons and valves.

Is that a thump stick in your pocket, or? Nice deep dive in that 35. The wifes 06 pilot is chuckin p0300, and 301-306. After this series, I might have enuf balls to lash those tight exhausts valves. Much thanks.

Id be suspicious the dealership gave the valve a decent thump before they realized their mistake. Little bit bent, doesnt seat, valve guide wears, carbon builds up and the problem worsens.

I was really startled when you said Woodhall. There is a place near where I grew up called Woodhall, and under no circumstances should anyone take themselves or any piece of car there.

Yes, its a long drive just to piss off a great source of work that you need done. Does he accept fed ex or ups to drop off these heads with return labels prepaid to do this work?

I had a chevy 350 doing that on 3 cylinders took the rockers off and banged on them with rubber malit a few times and the sealed up been good for the last 200000 km with np

If the dealer bent the valve would all that carbon had built up in the amount of time that she drove it after after the dealer until she brought it to SMA?

I pulled apart non-interference Motors with heavy carbon buildup that bent valves! I seen 3800 GM Motors do it with a broke timing chain. Just a theory.
