Can't help wondering if the truth lay somewhere in between the two stories.
I suspect you Light was on when I went in and still on when I picked it up mentality was correct.
I was burned a few years ago by an acquaintance who was out of work and had part of his suspension collapse, (he knew it was coming but that is another story.
He didn't have the cash to pay up front for the repair, so I arranged with my mechanic to do the work as cheap as possible and he could pay it off.
Basically the lower control arm failed where the strut inserts. (This was due to accident damage from previous owner - as stated earlier he knew this was a possibility and had been shown the damage on a hoist/lift. Luckily he was coming out of a car park when this happened and not turning off a freeway.
Since it collapsed, it damaged the rotor and some other parts. Only all he knew was lower control arm. (despite the itemised invoice he got. Wasn't happy with the bill and started going around to other shops asking How much to replace lower control arm, leaving out the story about how it had collapsed. Of course they all told him he was ripped off.
Some people just don't want to know.

Love your needle trick. I did that in 1984 on my 1983 F150! My Dad had a really small travel trailer he needed to take to a dealer. I didn't have a wiring harness on my truck. So I pulled my taillights and stuck some straight pins through the wires. I used some alligator clips and a bunch of electrical tape and hooked up the lights. The trailer didn't have brakes and we just needed to go about 8 miles. Dropped the trailer off, took out my taillights, removed the pins and wrapped the wires in some electrical tape. My Dad didn't think it would work. Then he thought I was nuts. Then he congratulated me on improvising! We had a short time line to get it there before I had to get to work. :-)

I love it. non diesel mechanic repairs what stealership cant or wont. SMA 1- stealership 0. Love the logic you use in your diagnosis Dr. O. Once again I caught this vid in a YT SMA binge watch. If you post it, I will watch. even if Im seeing it 4 years later. Good job. This is exactly why your phone and door dinger rings alot. No fuss. no muss. You are true to your customers and their vehicles. God Bless you and your family. One question. Why cant Mitchell get their diagrams right? seems to be a trend with them.

The dealer and I would have gone a few rounds. Asking if they could sell me a truck when they can't fix the one I have takes a lack of brains not balls. My reply would have been, have any diesels? I would have also asked at what point in the three weeks they had my truck did they notice it was a diesel. Then I would have asked when they figured out they didn't have a diesel mechanic.

I just wanted to thank you for this video and part 2. I was going to be in limp mode 4mph in 70 miles. I knew what needed to be done with the heater but getting out of that tamper mode service exhaust I wouldn't have known to test all three reductant heaters. I'm self-employed with not a lot of time and money to be dealing with this and you saved me on both much appreciated!

Lot of wasted time all you have to do is command the heater on and off and see if it changes heater 1 should go to about 6 volts if not its bad and all you have to do is change the reservoir. Any time you have a heater or level senor code it must be replaced not sure how the dealer dident fix that ya the def reservoir is under sprcial coverage i would have taken it back

I own a 2011 2500 HD as well and I am having the same exact issue. What did you charge the customer for this repair, parts included? I know GM paid for it or a portion, but just trying to get a rough estimate of what I should be paying for this type of service. My truck is apparently out of warranty for this specialty type of service

Whaahwwa! I'm back. My '14 Ram Ecodiesel just threw a P20BD code (DEF line heater control circuit open. This is a Chevy but the system is almost exactly the same in design. Here to get an idea before I crawl under it to find the wires to test them.
I just had to have a diesel. No one said I was bright.

Perhaps any mechanic doesn't have the same amount of electrical knowledge that you do?
I can't IMAGINE WHY the customer won't return to the dealer for the warranty work after they blew the opportunity to make the repair the first time they had the truck. Buy a Ford!
