Replace Transmission Fluid & Filter - Toyota Matrix / Pontiac Vibe FWD

A couple of weeks ago my transmission (2008 MATRIX - 180K miles) decided to QUIT. I was lucky I was a near home so I got it just to PARK.
The symptoms are that after some 40 miles of driving the gear disengaged and I was crawling slowly, at high revs.
I stopped at the side of the road, and checked the FLUID LEVEL. IT WAS WAY ABOVE THE HOT mark! while I expected LOW LEVEL!
After a few minutes - fluid rather warm still - I decided to try again. The car started moving, as the gear engaged, I traveled for half a mile and it started slipping again. I waited a few minutes, and again traveled half a mile to arrive home.
I have no to have it repaired so I left it parking. NEVER STARTED IT SINCE!
However, even today, two weeks later the fluid level was VERY HIGH. Today I decided to drain some fluid out - I took out about a quart. but the HIGH LEVEL STAYS THE SAME!
How can that be? Is there a MALFUNCTION situation that will cause the HIGH LEVEL?
I never added fluid - and if anybody did, it was my mechanic (no I did not tell them about this yet)
NOBODY will tell me if the high level could have caused the problem - and if lowering it MAY FIX IT!
They want me to tow it in - but I cannot afford anything at this moment!
That's why I am asking for your opinion.
1) what could cause HIGH LEVEL besides over-fill?
2) Why does it not go down? I took a quart out.
3) Is there even a SLIGHT CHANCE that lower level will CURE my transmission, by itself?

Thanks Eric! Great step by step video. I was able to replace the filter and gasket with no problem. Super easy to do. I had to laugh. Napa had no idea about the spray sealant but they had another gasket sealant that worked great. thanks for making my weekend project a breeze!

I swear I read online the torque specs for the pan bolts was 80 inch-lbs: ( Damnit! Now I have a little leak! Im gonna drop it again and replace the gasket. Is it possible I warped the pan with 80 inch-lbs? Im thinking I should order a new pan as well.

Just wondering? I'm trying to remove ( replace) the lower control arm on a Pontiac Vibe 2008, I managed to remove all the bolts (after lifting up the trans) but somehow I have a hell of a time to dislocate the arm from its position, , any suggestion? thanks

Ive got a 09 Matrix with 104000 miles. I want to change the trans oil and filter myself, would it be necessary to have a full flush done or just drain what I can and change filter?

NOW I am going to do the fluid n filter to my 04 Matrix that I just got for 400. Much easier than I thought and I cant believe a drain plug. and Im in love with that torque wrench. lol

What if you don't have a dip stick? I have a 2010 Chevy and no dip stick. I bought the car used. Don't know when or if this service was ever done. Any suggestions?

Hey Eric I have been thinking about doing this to my vehicle but I can't get out of my head that changing the fluid can break the transmission is this really true!

Nice video. First impression was NICE torque wrench then I realized my tinnitus was triggered. If I didn't have the hearing impairment I would so buy one.

Good video. One thing to mention. I always start the bolts by hand, starting it with the gun or ratchet, can increase chance of cross threading.
