If you were down in Fla, you probably wouldn't even own a brake caliper file. I have seen a vehicle or two come out of the body shop with an unusual problem that it didn't before it was repaired. For one in particular, the customer got the car back from the shop and every time they stepped on the brake pedal, it would blow the fuse for the brake lights. They went back to the shop and they worked on it for 8 hours and couldn't find what the problem was. I got the vehicle and the body shop said they would refund the 8 hour pointless labor charge if I could figure out what was wrong. Got the tailgate apart and started tracing wires and found that there was a wire for an option this vehicle didn't have and the body shop connected it to an unused lug that happened to go to ground. The lead for the optional component went to battery voltage when the brake was applied, so when you stepped on the brake, the hot wire went directly to ground and blew the fuse. They refunded the customer's money. Coincidently, the vehicle was one of the older XJ Jeep Cherokee's. That shop did very nice body work but electrical, not so much.

Hope Ms. O feels better soon. Come in down to Florida! We welcome hardworking good folks. Yes, working on vehicles here is generally pleasant other than you run into different sets of problems. It's nothing to see 200k to 300k on a car with zero rust and really minimal repairs done. You will occasionally see the green crusties and black film on electric components from the high humidity and leaking sunroofs. The heat isn't too bad of a problem on electronics like it was in the 80's. Pick up a wrench that's been in the summer sun for more than 30 seconds and you will have the maker's name permanently scared into your skin.

Get well Ms O! And as far as working on cars in florida, it's the same mess you face before so many of the migrators have brought thier new york and new jersey cars with them. I'm i. Flagler County Florida and my old 2000 jeep bought locally is actually from Pennsylvania. My wife's 2018 wrangler came from long Island. We've had it since it was only a year or so old so no salt damage on it thank goodness. Lol so when you decide to move to Florida unfortunately you'll still have plenty of new york cars to work on. Palm Coast is in Flagler County. Demographically it's about 80% new jersey!

Eric, funny that you're working on a Compass today, I was working on one today, too. A 2013, two wheel drive, and with the same kind of problem. Left rear wheel speed sensor glitching out every once in awhile. Managed to catch it with the graph function on the witech2. It was giving me a flat line then spiking every so often. Had it up on my hoist, spun the tire to see what would pop up. Spun the right rear for comparison to verify what I was seeing. Went back to the left rear, and found it suddenly started working normally. Got a speed sensor coming, and they are cheap, about $33. 00.

Eric, I completely understand why you would want to guess. I completely understand considering the price of the speed sensor. I have a question for you. I know you said you didn’t want to remove the speed sensor for fear of destroying it due to the rust. couldn’t you technically take some AES waves connections and simply extend the left connection to the right connection That way if the problem follows to the left side that would prove out the sensor on the right and not the wiring. Without, physically removing the sensor. just my thoughts Ron

I went into the weeds on a Lexus, replaced a wheel bearing with speed sensor. It was good for a few thousand miles then faulted again. Did the oscilloscope thing at the abs module and found no faults up until it died and went full open circuit. Long story short the new speed sensor failed but I got it warrantied after replacing the harness and a lot of troubleshooting.

I know you are poking fun at the FL mechanics. but I bought a 10 yr old vehicle from Eulee, FL. (I live in North GA) It had rust on the weirdest things. The brake lines, seat brackets, ABS sensor holes, etc. The body and frame were great, but all the fasteners were rusty. I think the salt air starts to get cars down there too

Time is money in the automotive repair industry. Price of the part is a factor. As a DIYer I also factor in the age of the part as well. Getting into the weeds can sometimes land you in a rabbit hole when all it needed was a new part to replace the seeming malfunctioning one. Confirming the repair like you do is critical.

That totally makes sense, especially if you can’t swap sides. As a master technician, if you have a gut feeling it’s probably right. And I specifically mean you sir. I hope Ms. O gets better soon. Thank you for the video, you always explain things so well, then you crack a funny joke to add a little levity to the situation.

Eric O, no Brakleeen sound effect brings a heavy cloud of sadness over your viewers. We long for the days of the number 1 hit BRAKLEEN Bell. it was the one thing we could count on lifting our spirits as we watch you struggle against the rust and grime. We await patiently with resolve.

We have salt here in Florida. Salt water in the gulf or the ocean and it gets down to the lower thirties at least once a winter. Maybe snow flurries here in sw Florida once in 10 years. So yep we have similar weather. The wheel sensor came out pretty easy on my 20 year old Chevy.

I usually change the speed sensor with the bearing job if it's cheap enough. Much easier to clean the rust out of the sensor hole and everything is new. If you can get the old sensor out without breaking it, you'll still be able to put it back in case the new one is no good

I guess if a possible fix is inexpensive and easy to install, most people would be happy for that solution, I know I would. But your long history of auto repair obviously gives you even more comfidence it that solution. Keep up the videos, we will be watching!

Great decision, Eric! When an educated guess is cheaper than a full diagnostic, go for it! If the cheap solution doesn't work, then you can spend all that time chasing gremlins in the circuit.
BTW, never seen a Jeep reach 318 mph before - must be a record

22: 57 Who all thinks this new sensor isn't a virgin part. Has been returned to napa & then sent out to sma 4 round 2. Maybe even been plugged into another car so the other mechanic didn't have 2 break his old sensor & b forced to buy another sensor.

Got the jeep wrangler 3. 8.
Has anyone ever had a wheel speed sensor/traction control activate when going under certain power lines
If so, is there a remedy
Another question:
Anybody feel the need to visit the dentist after this video

The rust that you cleaned off the spindle could have been the issue all along. I have seen and repaired that problem many times.
The rust develops and slightly lifts the sensor away from the tone wheel reducing the generated signal.
