I remember seeing Climb Dance, the short film of Ari Vatanen driving his Peugeot 405 T16 up Pike's Peak in 1988 and I was absolutely blown away by the spectacular scenery and the amazing skill and bravery of anyone who can drive a car fast up that road. My favourite bit of the film was him completely sideways round a hairpin bend and the helicopter shot pulling away and showing just how close to a massive drop he was driving. It was fantastic stuff and ever since I saw that, I have thought that Pike's Peak is one of the world's great motorsport venues, up there with Le Mans, the Nordschleife, the IoM TT, Spa and so on.
I've been to the States a few times but never made it to Pike's Peak. One day.

Technological achievement is indeed fascinating but this is excitement for engineers and IT guys.

Have that one anti progress friend - i am not him. it-s just that i follow technology development trends and everything leads to less human factor. The only outcome will be motorsports disappearing, young people not having any motivation to get in too. F1 loosing spectators every year is a good example of -over-safety- and technology effect.

They took away what this race was about when they paved the road, and now, it has no meaning whatsoever because technology has taken over. What's next. a jet aircraft breaks the record. All the real racers have gone on to find another challenge. a dirt road on another mountain.

OK, maybe boring is the wrong word, soulless then. I watched this car unofficially break the record at Goodwood FOS this year. I was particularly impressed by the giant diesel generator in the back of the VW support truck that charges this car and saves the planet.

If you've driven 12. 42 miles at an average speed higher than 93. 7 mph you are faster than this race. Curves and altitude make it a bit harder of course. ;)

Would be nice to see it on the dirt of pilkes peak. But I know that will never happen. The glory days of pikes is gone. All for tarmac rubbish

The Dallenbach name rang a bell, he's the son of Wally Dallenbach, Walley Jr. 's brother. A family full of racers, sort of like the Unsers.
