It is truly a city commuter but it does well anytime you can drive consistently from 50-80km/hr and avoid stop-&-go driving. So in the countryside I can easily get over 120km range between major cities (charging before returning. Highway speeds are only a challenge over 100km/hr as it drains the battery faster maintaining speed up steep hills. Having said that are I also regularly commute highway between two major cities that are 80km apart. Would I go cross country? No. But with my annual savings from buying gas I can easily by airline tickets when the need arises.

I have a 6 year old leaf, with 30, 000Km. I have yet to manage 100Km, however I have been working on my technique. 65Kph seems to be the optimum speed, for efficiency. I have found that accelerating before hills and then easing off and slowing up the hills, works best. Also, slow charging the battery seems to increase its range and preserve its life better. I live 58Km from the city, so there is no way I can get there and back, without a charge. I am going to try though, as I like a challenge. Perhaps I will put a generator in the boot.

our governments are a joke, they pretend they dont want us burning oil, then make insentives pretty much useless because of the cars initial cost. the incentives should be aimed at universities and car manufacturers in order to bring making costs down. i pretty much understand the running of a combustion engine and an electric motor. so even i know which is the most expensive to make. but its cheaper than an electric motor because of the combustion engines mass production. more u make, cheaper they is

Batteries are too primitive. Not to mention the fact that, for now, the power that goes into them comes mostly from fossil fuels. For batteries to become a viable option, we need a totally redesigned electric grid.
I think for now, the best manufacturers can do is invest in hydrogen fuel cells, solar panels and regenerative technology. I wonder for instance, if they can't open up some air intakes on the roof or side panels, and then direct the air to some wind turbines, generating power.

Do you forget to fill your car with petrol? Do you deliberately drive further in your petrol powered car than you know that it can go? Both answers should, of course, be no. It is no different with an electric car - no different at all.
98% of ALL car use in the UK is UNDER 50 miles per day. Sure, you'll go on holiday or on a road trip every now and then but if you want to do that with a Leaf, it's really simple; Ask Nissan and they'll give you a free courtesy diesel for the trip.

I agree the grid in its current form will have problems. But it's easier to clean up a power station than millions of vehicles. So you have an alternative? The black stuff will run out sometime, searching for it is already causing wars. There are loads of new technonlogies to produce electricity, I'm not talking nuclear fission either. It just needs the incentive for corporations and govenments to realise and get on board. Carrying on with cars the way they are is not an option.

-mrjaffar Watch electricity prices go through the roof with demand, the electric grid will struggle to cope so instead of building more power stations they will put the price up so people will be forced to use less especially are poor pensioners who are already in fuel poverty. and also we have the increase in population here in the uk from 60 million to 70 million in just a few years all putting more pressure on recources that are already struggling to cope.

You have to wonder how much that range would drop say in the rain or cold when you would be using heaters, wipers, etc? It also looked like that run was pretty traffic free. How much does stopping then restarting repeatedly affect it? What if there's more than one person on board? I've heard rumours that it can be as low as 30-40miles range in some cases. To me that only makes it useful for commuting locally. Considering the price I'll buy a small diesel.

TP79 is right: DID YOU KNOW FACT: petrol generation uses 10% of all the electricity produced in the UK today. That's Drax used to produce the petrol you put in your car.
Take petrol out of the equasion, free up that power for leccy vehicles and, combined with night-time surplus already there, you could replace a good 2/3's of cars in the UK with electrics. Think how much nicer inner cities would be without all that smog.

-peterdoes They might not be worth it (finantially) in 2011, but fast forward a few years to the point where petrol and diesel prices have doubled (which they will) and such a car will be a lot more economically attractive. -
The sensible option is to continue researching ALL types of alternative technology. Also have a serious think about increasing demand upon finite resources.
