The biggest horror was the double edged sword of its climate. Even in March, the heat and humidity were killer bad, just intolerable for some people. That heat and humidity fogs clear thinking, increases irritability and is simply uncomfortable despite the nice scenery.
Nice to visit Oh, yeah. But LIVE there You better think VERY hard on that.

St Pete is FAR cooler than Tampa. Also more $$$$.
Pinellas County were St Pete is located, is THE DENSEST populated county in the state of Florida. And traffic sucks now year round. Oddly rent and home prices have doubled or tripled in the past 5 years yet average salaries in the area can’t afford the average rent or mortgage, forcing many to leave or get roommates

Downtown Tampa is developing rapidly especially housing, the riverwalk is very popular, there are still a few sketchy areas. There are much nicer sections of downtown.

Kress was the precursor to Kresge. Their buildings in downtown Durham NC and Greensboro NC have been rehabbed into condos, hopefully that will happen in Tampa as well.

My family and I spent the last two weeks of December 2009 in St. Pete and Tampa Bay area and the temp. never got into the 60 degrees. With the wind blowing it was cold.
