I don't do enough flying to make a statistical determination of the performance of airlines, but rather an anecdotal one. That said, Malaysian airlines is one of the best in the sky, and is THE best in the sky regarding value for money.
Yes, their hard product [the seats and cabin] can be a bit frayed around the edges. The SOFT product, [the service] is very hard to beat.
Obviously, when you are in the seat, you can't test it properly until you reach cruising altitude. As it was my first B. C. flight for a while, I was keen to test out the seat in lie-flat mode. It didn't work. One of the attendants noticed my problem, and three flight attendants [a guy and two women], worked on the seat, and after 15 minutes and dirty hands, my bed was working 100%. That is why the hard product shortcomings may not matter. If it is humanly possible, these folks will make it work. 10 Minutes later, one of those attendants [with sparkly clean hands], served my supper.
The food may not be considered the very best, but it was delicious, quality food, presented well. Salmon, Satay sticks, whatever, it was all great. The wines were great, but I don't usually drink them. It is not fashionable to have a well-done steak, but mine was well done, delicious and tender.
I tend to stay away from isle seats, as people can bump you as they pass, but it depends on the config. Because of the seat inconvenience, I got some extra points.

i always enjoy your reviews because they are very objective. Re: this flight -- pay for wifi I've flown from U. S. to Australia on Qatar, Singapore, Cathay, Qantas and none of them charged for wifi in B class. Food: although you state that some of the food was tasty, food is also about the presentation -- your salmon miso looks disgusting. and that croissant should never have left the galley. Once again, flying foreign carriers to Australia you NEVER hear the cabin crew talking in the galley and a couple of times, I sat in a seat right in front of galley. Sorry, but American crews just don't get the service aspect sometimes and although you paid with miles, many other passengers pay with money so it's really disturbing to hear that you couldn't get a good sleep due to cabin crew clucking like chickens.

United is the main airline I use. I have flown the San Francisco/Melbourne route several times, not quite as long as your flight but 15. 5 hours vs. 16 is splitting hairs. I have never been served food that looked like want you got. Did you piss off the flight attendants or something The only time I saw food like that was when I had to fly in Economy Plus. I do agree it is hard to get sleep with people getting up and moving around. I remember a long flight where two young ladies were constantly taking selfies and doing little influencer look at me video's, guessing they posted on tik tok or something. Admittedly in 2020 my international travels sharply but at that time Polaris class was new so maybe I got the new and shiny experience.

Seems to me you were pretty lenient on your stars
Service
What service if your paying this kind of money and you are subjected to ice hammering and constant chatter when those attendants kniw what they are doing wrong!
No offense to food service companisc, but the tray liked like sone high school meals - slop and sloppy look
Isnt anyone tired of dumbing down
Of accepting because that’s the gold standard now
Flying / eating on board / even dressing was considered special or a treat
We all work and answer to someone
I suppose United / delta etc assume you’re screwed and will accept without recourse
Thankyou for the video

Thanks for sharing the experience. Just did a Brisbane to Vancouver trip on Air Canada this week in their business class, from your description of the crew on your United flight I must say we had a very professional crew and no disruption during the flight. I have not flown United in Business but it seems to me the Air Canada layout for the seat on the 787-9 and the size of the IFE is better. Thanks to your review I can compare what we experienced against another airline. Note I have no affiliation to Air Canada except as a passenger who pays their own way as you do.

Amazed United flight crew don't talk quietly if they wish to talk. Mind you I'll disagree with you on the water in the lavatory being un-potable you do know Sydney Australia has safe water and drinkable and that is what is in the tanks even if it was Urine Recyc like on Red Dwarf or ISS still drinkable. How do you think people brush their teeth mid-flight. Mind you wonder how full your flight actually was since not many travel to the US these days not unless they want to end up in ICE prison for 6 weeks(or more) for no reason.

Worst crew we had was on Virgin America on our flight from LAX to JFK after flying Qantas from Sydney. They barely interacted with the passengers and my wife was waiting for the lav near the galley and overheard them gossiping about co-workers and complaining that no one was ordering the VERY pricey food and, oh my god, do we have to throw all this food out (We’d already eaten in the terminal and brought a big water bottle, so we certainly didn’t order anything on board)

I flew United polaris to Europe once, and requested a vegan meal like always. It felt like I was being given economy food most of the time. Spaghetti and steamed veggies, plastic wrapped GF muffin that I've literally been served as part of economy and a cold banana. I've had better food in Lufthansa economy, so clearly I'm not that picky when it comes to what I get. Part of the territory for special meals but would it kill them to get creative

Whether you paid more than $7, 000 for the ticket or redeemed 100, 000 United miles, the experience should not be undermined by crew behavior that actively disrupts passengers’ sleep. In a premium cabin, sleep is a core part of what passengers are paying for, so behavior that disrupts it is a direct failure of the service. This is an intensely frustrating experience for passengers who have paid a substantial premium precisely to arrive rested.

Speaking from experience. unless work paying. i would never pay a cent for US airline international business. I would rather fly any chinese airline than US. The americans have zero service attitude and act like they are doing you a favor. The best routes are taken by the longest tenured and its usually retirement aged folks with attitudes. Especially if ur younger in business class, they give you a glare lmao. pathetic service

I understand that the flight crew are important and always needs to be respected. but for them to just plop stuff in a passenger's area is truly not ok. But let's be honest that food looks like a frozen dinner. Thats something I'd expect in economy on a fight that long or sadly a U. S domestic 1st class. that was a waste of points and mabey worth 3k in cash. and i wouldn't do it on that airline.

Anyone who complains about flying Polaris on a 16 hour flight is too out of touch to really listen too I travelled back and forth for 23 years from Shanghai & Hong Kong on United, 13 hours and in Eco Plus. Guess what, all those miles, one bad trip.
Then again, I had no expectations of them treating me like I was Gods gift, all I asked was to deliver me on time without getting sick.

Jeb, during the pandemic era, I got an offer to fly Polaris to South America for just $400 dollars and I did the upgrade. I picked 1A, the flight was almost empty. The noise from the flight attendants speaking/chatting/laughing through the entire flight was beyond awful. Flying with LATAM I never had this issue. Why is that some American service crews are so entitled

11: 45 that’s not true. Just had an awful experience on Qatar in the bulkhead. It’s just too close to the action. Always loud there. Sucks you had to ask for the 2nd service of food before breakfast.
I’m flying delta 1 to MEL and EK F on the way back. Not looking forward to delta 1 but at 120k delta miles per person you can’t really beat that for sky peso

Service is bad due to FA seniority rules in United. The most tenured (and oldest) are just not motivated to do more than the minimum in most cases. Especially if they know you got your ticket on miles (it’s all on their apps. Unfortunately unless they get rid of all their unionized legacy FAs and move to a merit/review based system nothing will change.

Yawn! Don’t you think there are enough airline reviewers already I had to switch off. I find your tone quite patronising. Isn’t there something else, something more original you could review This has been done by so many before you. One flight doesn’t really give a great perspective of consistency. That is what is important, not some random flight.

I had the privilege of sitting in 1A from JNB-EWR just a week ago and our crew was amazing. Quiet during the flight, and didn’t use the bin above my seat for their belongings. Seat wise my only complaint was the shoulder room, however, I am a larger man with amen wide shoulders. Yes, the pajamas are great. The food was decent. It nothing special.

I am sick of these American flight crews - literally talk to each other, sit on their phone while we serve ourselves in the galley with their self service snacks. It is literally their job and they are talking, eating and on the phone. Why bother having flight attendants The fact that they used that ledge is very wrong. I hope you filed a complaint!

Fascinating to compare this with my MSP-HND flight I took in Feb on delta, crew-wise; I was in Delta one, and the crew was spectacular on both flights to and from Tokyo. Nothing like what jeb described with united. I would have been extremely upset if the crew was messing around near my seat nonstop while I attempted to sleep

We flew the reverse route- Houston to Sydney in 2019. It was a great flight with excellent food and service. I slept about 6 hours and woke up when we were just south of Hawaii and realized we were only about halfway to Sydney! We had a bulkhead seat and fortunately did not have any issues with the FA using overhead bins.
