I did the Norway in a Nutshell also late June this year, also from Bergen to Oslo. I also made an overnight stop at Flam so I don't need to rush. While I agree absolutely that the scenery was wonderful, the experience is horrendous. The bus (route 950) portion is a complete chaos and they were just not coordinated and arranged to take so many people at the same time. Hundreds of people arriving at the same time on that 8am train from Bergen. People did not know where to find the bus at Voss and were lining up at random places. When the bus came, they allowed everyone to board and then only told people that they do not allow anyone to stand inside the bus after the buses were completely filled up to the front, so they asked people to get off, and then people need to retrieve their luggage from the hold. The buses left and those who were left behind did not know what to do. Eventually another bus came but it was again chaos when people tried to rush it. I thought I was in some 3rd world country. June is not even the peak of peak season yet. I don't know how they are going to handle this in July or August. Lastly, regarding the cruise ship at Flam in the early morning, actually I took the 8am departure from Flam too but the cruise ships were already there. They arrived at around 7am and swamp of excursion tours from the ship got on our first train out of Flam. However, at least they arranged this very well this time. While the seats are not reserved, the first car was reserved for people with individual tickets. All other cars are reserved for those from the excursion tours. So we were separate from those taking the train from the cruise ship. Personally, I would not recommend going on this trip in summer. It's just too crowded and chaotic. May be go between November and March and you would have a much relaxed experience where you can really enjoy the scenery.

For anybody watching, Hurtigruten (Norway cruise line freight company for all little towns along the coast) allows you to book a ticket without a cabin for all rides shorter than 24 hours. I took it from Bergen to Alesund (20 hrs) which also included the Fjord trip to Geiranger for less than US$60. I slept overnight in a lounge which was empty and the ride is pretty smooth as we traveled in the protected waterways not the Atlantic. Took terrific pictures of the fjords.
P. s. I choose Alesund as it had cheap planefare back to Oslo. I did a Triangle - Bergen (Hurtigruten ferry) Alesund (flight) Oslo (train) Flam (ferry) Bergen.

As an American, I'm constantly trying to come to grips with the size of European countries. The EU in part was at least partly devised as an economic and political bloc that could operate on equal footing with the US despite its more disparate languages, cultures and economies. In this context European states can be compared with US ones. Norway is fairly large, similar in area to Montana, but more populous. In terms of population, a little less than Wisconsin, Colorado or Minnesota, with which it shares quite a bit in terms of geography and culture, but slightly more than South Carolina, Alabama, Louisiana, or Kentucky.

We just did this exact itinerary in mid-June, so we were probably a week before you! We loved it. It was very easy to navigate, and we could not believe the scenery. Just the best. We did book the service that took our luggage from Bergen to Oslo for us so we didn't have to manage bags -- just our little backpack with toiletries/change of clothes. I would recommend that. We also stayed in the other hotel in Flam (there are only two) and wish we stayed in the one you chose instead. We would definitely recommend Norway in a Nutshell, and I enjoyed reliving it with you two thru this video! Thanks so much.

Ah, wonderful memories. Did NIAN (similarly from Bergen to Oslo) in a single day in 2016 by having my luggage sent ahead of me, looks like some of trains have been upgraded. But the scenery hasn't changed - still wonderful throughout. Can't disagree about the high cost of travel in Norway. But the good thing about Norwegian hotels is that a room almost always comes with breakfast included - I saved by loading up in the morning, skipping lunch, and then having dinner later.

I'm working in Bergen at the moment. It is indeed a beautiful city in a beautiful country. For an even better view of Bergen, take the cable car at Ulriksbanen. It's not as cheap, but the views are spectacular from the Skyskraperen Restaurant at the top, especially on a clear day. You can walk up (took my fit colleague 45 minutes) and down if you want for free, but it really is a killer on the legs.

I did Norway in a Nutshell a few years ago, but from Oslo to Bergen, all in one day Absolutely one of my best trips ever. I had airfare back to the States after a day in Bergen but my friends had flights from Oslo so after we arrived in Bergen, they got back on a train (with a sleeper car) and rode back to Oslo to catch their flight in the morning. Would do this trip again in a heartbeat! Thanks for a great video.

Hello Jeb/Suzanne,
Quick question, at the end of the video, when you gave pricing you stated it was 4 days 3 nights. Did you take the same trip back to where you started. Oslo to Bergen
Thank you
I started watching your content this year, love it all. This Norway trip is stunning, it is a must do on my list.
Thank you so much for the details you provided.

Greetings from Australia! Our young person has trains as his special interest. It is a slippery slope into that rabbit hole and I find myself invested before I know it. Whilst overseas travel is not a reality for us, we live vicariously through you both. We have huge excitement each new train video. Thank you for producing such wholesome and happy content!

I did it the other way with my cousins in 2017. It was great, and one of the last times that all three got a trip without wives and children. Did you do the Stalheimskleiva BTW, it takes 22 minutes to drive from Flam to Gudvagen. I visited Flam when I was 6, and lost my parents. I knew where my hotel room, so I went back there to wait for them.

Slartibarterfast designed Norway and its fjords. Even got a award for it: )
It's funny to listen to people complaining that Norway is expensive. Yes it is for people that dont make any money. Remember that you dont have to tip in Norway and the cost is according to the income in the country. 1 USD is NOK 10. 20 so a dollar goes far: )

I was there over July 4th and stayed at the same great hotel, but no fireworks, but the rest was as spectacular as Jeb's camera shows. Definitely need the overnight as there is quite a bit to do in Flam. One must do is the RIB boat down and back in the fjord and hiking. Do not miss this trip when you go to Norge (Norway.

Perfect timing for this episode as I just booked our trip to Norway for Oct 2026. Doing the Coastal Express cruise/ferry on Havila from Bergen to Kirkenes and back to Bergen. Was planning on doing the Norway in a Nutshell before our Coastal Express voyage from Oslo to Bergen! Thanks for sharing this!

I’ve been to Norway several times (even stayed Hotel Norge twice) & it’s my favorite country by far. I’ve been to Geirangerfjord & taken the train from Bergen to Oslo, but not Norway in a Nutshell; now I know it’s an absolute must! Thank you both for taking us along on this spectacular trip!

I was wondering why the beer prices you were showing were so expensive in Norway. And I say this as an NYC resident where, on average, you're paying $10-11 per beer with tax and tip.
Then I took a look and it looks like they levy, on average, 50% in excise taxes.

There are a number of scenic train rides in the world and the line from Oslo to Bergen is certainly one of the most scenic among them. But for me, the most scenic train journey remains the Bernina-Express together with the Glacier Express in Switzerland.

If you're looking for another country with scenery check out Kyrgyzstan. Public transport options are limited to long distance coaches, which probably dont pass the best spots, but it's genuinely the most picturesque country that I have been to.

We did this trip in the late 1990's. Being of Norwegian and Swedish heritage, I always enjoy seeing the sites. Lefsa is (I believe) leftover mashed potatoes, butter, cinnamon, and sugar. Extra butter makes it all the better. No lutefisk for ya

As a local I have to say it won't be hard to date exactly which days you recorded this. Between finding a sunny day and a day without disruption of trains going Bergen-Voss it must be limited to at most a handful of days every few months. :p

Norway is hot. I have had 2 of my FB friends posting Norway trip pictures this month. One was on a cruise the other sort of like this one. I did Oslo-Bergen trip in 1975 on a post college graduation trip to Europe. May want to go back!
