Blanca Peak: Skiing Colorados 4th Highest Point - Mountain trips

A random visit to Creston Peak last year has led to a return trip back to this corner of Colorado. First we sandboarded the Sand Dunes National Park and the next day we climbed Blanca Peak. This Colorado 14er is tucked away in a rugged looking corner of Colorado. It's a unique mountain range that rises up on the edge of a giant, flat expanse. The visual contrast is stunning and well worth the visit. Even Christof couldn't deny its majestic beauty as he suffered to it's summit

Seems like one of the more rugged peaks you guys have topped. UNTIL YOU GUYS. I've always looked with scorn on all the prep boy mountaineers, especially since they seem to have every requisite, stereotypical, and neon colored gimick and doo-dad. but you guys are so hilarious and sarcastic I cant hate. The miles you dudes (Danny) can cover in 12 hours is legit = RESPECT. That grand canyon solo run vid was the one though.

You're not gonna believe this, but that is the very first 14er/4000er I ever did, age 17, in 1987, and I distinctly remember that road in! We stopped before trailhead too, we also saw 4x4s limping down, many of them damaged. We slept on a desert floor of low cactus. What a night. It was in summer though.
I also loved the comment we knew we'd need skis but we wouldn't necessarily be skiing. Mysterious!

I did this 15 years ago, in my early 30's, blanca is the easiest of the three next to little bear and ellingwood. You guys wine a lot. Blanca is an intermediate snow climb, advanced ski, not hard, nothing over 45 degrees, no skiing over a no fall zone. Looks like you guys smell real nice and have real expensive gear. Reminds me to relax and not be high maintenance.

Yeah, lake como road is nasty. Any SUV can probably make it up the first mile or two, but nothing stock will make it to the top. And after the first 2-ish miles parking spots and turnaround points are extremely limited. Even hiking up it is a pain. Not really looking forward to doing that again but I still need to snag Little Bear some day.

Some of the best footage Ive seen of the ridge. First time I made it up there we were hip deep in snow until the saddle. Just post-holed straight up, there was no trail to be seen. Ridge to summit looked more like your footage. Afterward we glissaded almost the full north face on the way down.

Ive done blanca 3 times, watch out for the family of bears on top! theyve stolen my chow twice. Also where the treeline starts (or ends, depending) around there, to the left of the main trail/road, there is a hand built fireplace made of stone. It is a wonderful camping spot. Highly recommended.

carried a drone and a camera with sound extension to the top of blanca. pretty bad ass. what kind of camera you rocking? i've done the hike up that road twice. it's no joke. i had to camp at lake cuomo to catch my breath but you guys were able to keep going all the way to the top. insane.

Honestly, a consistent headache is a symptom of concussion. Headaches shouldnt last for that long when caused by a direct blow to the head, and further exercise is strongly indicated against in the literature. Take care of your brain, because you dont have a back up.

My dad and I hiked that a couple years ago in the summer. Got up the 4 by 4 trail in a rental suburban with little problems but by the time we got down we were missing a running board number and one door was bashed in. One of the best/worst days of my life

Love your videos, they've given me a ton of ideas/inspiration on things I want to do! What cameras/gear do you use to film? Might be a cool video idea some time, I'd love to hear more about the videography creative side of things.

Danny - what line of work are you in? You briefly mentioned once that you're in a seasonal job. Just curious how you afford the time to do this. It's inspiring and fun to watch your group of friends conquer mountain after mountain!

I drove by this mountain last month. I was kinda underwhelmed. Doesnt look that tall in person. I guess the elevation of the peak is so high because the base elevation of the farm land around it is already pretty high

It wasn't until the drive up to the Grays and Torreys trailhead that I realized my little Subaru is great in Denver, but I'm going to need a truck to really explore Colorado. Some crazy rough mountain roads out here.

I live in Alamosa right next to Blanca, and on behalf of the entire area I sincerely apologize for Lake Como road. lol it is truly a nightmare. Glad you guys got a killer view though and hope you enjoyed the valley

Besides the videos on you performing the hikes/climbs. What do you guys do in order to be in shape for what y'all do? Also god forbid, if someone goes down do you guys have the means to get someone down?
reply

YES. Seeing you guys on the snow, brings back Big Smiles and winter memories in the sierra's winter backcountry sking, cross country and snow shoeing. Out 10 -14 days, Auggie, Douglas and myself.

Some people just take longer to acclimate to altitude. If Christof got acclimated to 10, 000 feet for a few days he would feel great. That is a beautiful and still uncrowded part of Colorado.

Never catch me using Shug for that hike! Ive done it twice once with snow shoes once with only boots. Would never carry skis in ski boots seems like these guys are on the spectrum!

Thanks for your videos. They lift people out of the confined environments where many reside due to the pandemic. Your excellent videos improve my mood when I watch them.

Awesome vids! So great to watch these while locked in. Hopefully you guys can make it to the mountains around Mexico City: ) We have Iztaccihuatl and Pico de Orizaba
