I used to think going too long without eating while you're extremely hungry would damage my body. Then I read about ghrelin, leptin, insulin, and glucagon, and I realized hunger is just a hormonal situation. It has little to do with actual need for food, for someone who has food readily available at any time. Once I realized that, I started regarding the sensation of hunger as an indication that I was losing weight, and the longer I could ride that feeling, the more weight I would lose, especially going to bed hungry.
So I swam every day, and pushed my first meal later and later, and made my last meal earlier and earlier, and some days I worked out at the gym too. I lost 35 lbs in a few months by working out and allowing myself to feel hungry. I never once counted calories, but I did decrease my carbs and decreased my meal size from what I had been eating. I've kept off most of the weight in the ensuing years, because I basically changed my relationship with food.

Well, smart watches can be fun, but puzzling. Out of curiosity, I swam the exact same distance 2 days in a row, though not positive because the watch doesn't track kicking laps, but they were at least close. One day was more distances 200 yards and over, the other day was more hard 50s and 100s, so more sprints. I had a higher pulse rate on the 200 days than I did on the short sprint days. I had 10 more calorie burn on the short sprints days than I did on the mid distance days. Total calorie burn was just over 1500 for each day, and about 5500 yards, 2000 or so just in kicking. I pretty much swam about the same distances between freestyle and over arm side stroke. I figured the short sprint day would burn a lot more calories than the mid distance day. I had noticed that I do get a slightly higher pulse rate if I am swimming 100 yard distances than I do with all out 25s or 50s. Have to see what calorie count is today with maybe 500 yards of fly.

I think its a combination of proper food intake and nutrition, with intense training. when I swimming slow, I don't burn much, unlike when I mix the training with sprints, fly, etc. the speedy sessions I think required to help losing weight. I also like what is called muscles confusion when I decide to change the stroke with out thinking about it in advance, I sort of surprise my body with what stroke I'm gonna do next.
I wish if you can do something detailed on the daily nutritions requiremed, the best timings of the meal, specially early morning and late evening sessions.
Being following you guys and learning from you for 18 months, and I have to say that I loved the videos and it's contents, its clear and easy to understand.
Hopping to join you guys in one of your training camps soon.
Thanks a million for the great stuff and efforts.

I agree. Swimming does not mean you will lose weight or fat. If you want to lose weight, you run, but running does not mean you will lose fat. When you run, the body will reduce weight the best it can to make you run more efficiently, therefore, you need to exercise muscles you want to retain when running, because it is not only fat that may shrink when you run. Swimming usually guarantees that you will have good muscle tone and gain weight from swimming, but the portion of weight gain by swimming that is muscle and fat is not determined based on effort or endurance. Measuring what body changes occur based on diet, exercise routine, swim practice, and other factors will tell you how the total activity will change your body. Your health, fitness, mental state, and injury level are factors that take top priority.

Hi. I was born with a club foot which was operated upon. So I have zero mobility in one ankle of mine which is stuck in a 90degree position. It atrophied my calf.
So that leaves me with one normal leg and one very weak leg which I can't bring to pointy-toe position because I can't move my ankle.
This non-symmetry leaves me with a skewed kick which takes me all around the place. I have no balance.
This leaves my feet sinking, and my lack of balance makes it extremely difficult to learn how to breathe in the freestyle position.
Can anyone please help? I'm supposed to swim daily to help relax my scoliosis affected spine. Yeah. I'm fked

unfortunately, the information from approx. .14-. 26 sec of this video is nonsense. she ate too much. the laws of thermodynamics are not suspended for swimmers, of which i am one. people typically assume that they have burned far more calories than they actually do. more likely her change of diet resulted in lower calories as a result of greater low cal dense carbs so satiety increased, hunger decreased and calorie intake diminished. period.

As a type 2 diabetic this has def been a journey learning the new ways my body operates. I start swimming in the AM with a BS of 90. I finish an hour and a half later and it's at 220. This has been frustrating to say the least. I have more questions with my diabetic pharmacist and need to get a hold of a athletic dietician. I can only stomach so many Badger Milks

For those who hesitate to eat well after heavy workouts, please look up Michael Phelps' diet plan.
I have seen people who suppress their hunger and abuse their health. Please understand that it is necessary to eat well (and healthy) in order to maintain a good health and continue the swim workout. Starving or getting malnourished is not the solution.

When i was a teen, frolicking in the water made me ravenous. Now i am in my 6th decade, an hour in the water I wasnt dying of hunger afterwards. I ate 3 hours before pool time. I try my best not to eat sugary food or simple starch. It could also be age related slower metabolism. I was surprised that I wasnt very hungry now that I started pool time.

I currently need a 10-15s break after every 100m of crawl.
Do you have any tips for swimming more relaxed and getting less tired?
I find it really hard to focus on the core muscles when in the water, the first 15m it's fine, they my legs start to sink.
(My upper body and arms are long, my legs are short)

Thank you for this video. It always astounds and depresses me the simplistic view society has on how our bodies work in terms of weight losses and gains. It's a strong blame and shame narrative, with language like clean diet. this kind of information and discussion is so valuable and refreshing.

Swim 10km a week for a while now. When I play sports my lung capacity is through the roof. I am far fitter - I tend to swim Butterfly, Dolphin kick breaststroke and Breastrokes. I am trying to incorporate Side/combat stroke.
My shoulders and chest are bigger and much more defined

Could you make a video on how to find your own freestyle technique? Compared to my friends, my freestyle technique is much less efficient, because of my wider body frame. I tried many different types of freestyle but none of them seem to work. Your advice would be greatly appreciated
