How Many Reps to Build Muscle (BODYWEIGHT EXERCISES)

The most common question asked by those working out is how many reps should you do to build muscle. When it comes to bodyweight exercises and workouts, the answer to this depends on a lot of factors, namely how strong you are and how much you weigh. You see, prescribing a specific number of reps to a bodyweight exercise is ignoring the strength and size differences that could exist between two people doing the exact same workout. In this video, I show you a method for determining the best reps to build muscle and answer the questions of how many reps for building muscle as applied specifically to bodyweight exercises. Whether you are doing dips, pullups, pushups or any other body weight exercise-you-ll be able to start adding muscle mass if you follow the steps outlined. The first thing you want to do is warmup. Following a brief warmup of jump rope or light jogging and some mobility work for the joints involved in the workout you are about to do, you will want to perform a set of the bodyweight exercise to failure. Whatever the number of reps that this occurs at is, will become part of the workout equation. Use the multiplier shown here (either 3, 5, 7 or 10 times) to push yourself to the level of challenge that you-re after. Any bodyweight workout can be made extremely hard if you follow these recommendations for how many reps should you do to build muscle. You can build mass with any rep range that challenges the muscles being used and takes them to failure, provided you do this within 45-60 seconds per set. This is the concept of time under tension. Too many sets to failure done in just 5-10 seconds tends to work more on strength than it does muscle growth. With bodyweight exercises and workouts, you want to be sure that you take your reps to failure each time so that you-re not leaving effort (and untapped muscle growth) on the table each time. For a complete bodyweight only workout with the exact sets and reps needed to build muscle spelled out every day, be sure to head to and get your ATHLEAN XERO program. This six week no equipment workout lays out the best reps and sets for muscle building as well as a day by day meal plan

I tried this with handstand push-ups (leaning against a wall) and I thought I could get to 10X but it just might be a really long workout. I could do 8 reps on my first set before failure, and it took me 30 minutes to get to 46 total reps before I totally failed to do even 1 rep. I rested for the full 90 seconds and just could not push myself up even 1 inch. So that-s 5. 75X. BeAXst was WAAY harder than I anticipated! I got past Pro but not Elite yet. It felt great! It feels like a huge challenge that is tailored to me! I guess I will have to work up to enough strength endurance to get to higher multiples of my 1 set max.

After sixteen months inactive due to slight shoulder pain, I have been trying to resume the -Beast mode- in pullups. My question is whether I'll still see progress if I keep trying to achieve beast mode, with 90 seconds rest max between sets, even though I reach a point during workout in which I can only do 1 pullup to failure, take a 90 second rest or less, and go back up and do another 1 pullup set, until I reach 10X the amount I did on my first set. Thanks

I'd like to see a sport specific bodyweight only full body workout using this progression model. Specifically for Wrestling and ideally more strength and conditioning based rather than hypertrophy. What exercises/variations, exercise and rest intervals times, and workout frequency would best help say wrestlers. (Of course I think different sports would have their own Variations. I'm a fan, keep up the great work. Thanks Brad

While you CAN get a good overall PUMP doing bodyweight exercises, the ONLY way you will build muscle is by creating PROGRESSIVE OVERLOAD. Unfortunately bodyweight CANNOT provide the overload your muscles need in order to grow. You will not be able to get BIG. Now if you want to be incredibly lean & cut you can achieve that look, but putting on size can ONLY be accomplished through PROGRESSIVE OVERLOAD. Period!

I am 53 years old and weigh 220. Right now I do 10 sets of 20 push ups and rest a minute between sets. I do push ups one day, chin ups the next day doing 10 sets of 10, squats the next doing 10 sets of 20 and take a day off and start over. Should I keep doing what I'm doing or do this program? My age makes it harder to recover but I'm building decent muscle mass. What do you all think?

Hi. so what about if i do 6 types of push up 3-5 set and 8-12 reb? 30-60 sec rest?
and do the set use resistand pands to make it hard ( i do first set only use pody. the second set i use lite band. thesrd set i use medium resistance band ) and advancesd to have resistand band. even the push up i will advanced after i feel my body ready.
thanks

I'm a bit confused. If I do pushups to failure, let's say I made 10. How am I supposed to do 5x that amount? Even with a 90 second pause, I will completely fail at the end of the second or third set -. After all, it is to failure the first set -. Not sure how it's possible to do 10x. If someone can 10x, isn't the first set not enough then?

Okay so i am a complete newbie when it comes to speaking in fitness terms. can anyone please explain this to someone like me? (I want to be lean and toned and gain a bit of mass)
Like as simple as possible how many reps of an exercise? How many sets of that specific exercise? How many sets per workout and how many per week?

A martial teacher i trained with one told me this about push ups and sit ups.
Start trying for 25. If you can make 25, try for 50. Of you can make 50, try 75. If you can do 1000; gues what; try 1250.
His idea is reach your limit. Break it. And repeat. He always said; if you havent failed, you havent gotten anywhere.

So I can do 30 reps in one set, but by the 28th rep, I'm shaking. If I do this 5 times, can I span it throughout the whole day, or do I just do it during my workout time? Cause if that's the case, i can only probably do 40-45 reps in 15 -20 min. Not much, however, I only way 148 lbs.
