Did you know that there are 10 gym exercises that you might be doing wrong In this video, I am going to show you 10 exercises, the common mistakes that are made, and how to avoid them so that you never do these 10 gym exercises wrong again or make any other exercise mistakes when trying to build muscle. It’s important to note why these mistakes need to be fixed; some of them have to do with safety and making sure you don’t get injured when performing them, while other fixes are just to make sure the exercises are as effective as possible when you want to build muscle. The first gym exercise you’re getting wrong is the preacher curl. The mistake that I see being made most often is the angle at which people allow their arms to rest on the preacher pad. When you sit all the way down in the seat, your arms are stretched out in front of you at an angle that places a lot of unnecessary stress on the biceps tendon. This can lead to a tear if you’re not careful. The best way to fix this is to simple sit up and drive your elbows into the pad, activating your lats and giving yourself better leverage that will still allow the biceps to do the work they need, while keeping them safe in the process. Next up is the lat pulldown. While there is nothing wrong with using the standard bar, I think you can make the exercise more effective by using a narrower grip. If you don’t know exactly how narrow your grip should be, I implore that you use a triceps pushdown bar instead. This will force a narrower grip which will allow for more stretch on the lats at the top of the exercise as your elbows are in front of your body and will keep the elbows tight to your sides, activating the lats more. The next gym mistake you are probably making has to do with lunges. As I covered in my recent review of The Rock’s leg workout, to keep more stability on the exercise, I want you to step your foot out at a wider angle. Whether you are lunging forward or backwards, this wider angle will allow for a greater base of support and prevent you from losing your balance. To further create stability and balance, turn your torso ever so slightly in order to be squared up with your front leg, the one that is doing the work. One of the most common exercise mistakes I see, not just in the gym but when people train at home as well, has to do with the pushup. The first mistake I notice is the angle of the arms. If you are trying to do a standard pushup, the best way to find the perfect arm angle that stacks the elbows above the wrists and doesn’t force your elbows to flare out is the quick sequence I show in the video. The other mistake is that people often press straight up and down, instead of at an arc like they would with a bench press. This pressing angle can be achieved by rocking back on your toes as you press up and rocking forward as you go down. These fixes will ensure safety and stability through your wrists, elbows, and shoulders, while also making the exercise more effective at building muscle. The lying triceps extension, one of my favorite triceps exercises, is one that has a bit of sneaky mistake, as it’s sometimes hard to notice. However, it’s a big one. If you allow your arms to fully extend over your chest, directly in line with gravity, then you will be taking a large chunk of tension off the triceps. When you want build big triceps, you need to keep the arms at a slight angle backwards at the top of the exercise. This make the triceps align more perpendicularly to gravity, which increases tension and the potential to build muscle. When it comes to the Bulgarian split squat, this exercise mistake I see made all the time is finding the proper setup. To make the exercise most effective and stable, you will want to follow exactly how far out to put your lead foot and how to make your back foot stable on the bench. Fixing this exercise mistake will ensure that you are getting the setup right every time without fail. When it comes to building muscle and staying injury free, being sure that you are doing your gym exercises correctly is important. Remember, it's not just what exercises you do, but how you do them that matters the most. For the rest of the 10 gym exercise you're doing wrong, be sure to watch to the end of the video to see what they are and how you can fix them so you never get them wrong again. I love this style of video! It feels like a walk through of the gym. I am trying to get a bit more knowledge so I can put together the ideal workout for me - so just an idea for a video:
Could you go through the gym in this same way and put together a full workout for different muscle groups like legs (one for men and one for women) and a couple for upper body, maybe one for core or misc exercises.
I really like your pacing in this video, it feels like zero time wasted - really sets the pace for an effective workout.

Very informative video, Jeff. Thank you. Would you be able to create a series of videos showing how different muscle groups can be targeted using only dumbbells Let me explain: I only have access to dumbbells for my workouts, and it feels like I’m doing the same exercises over and over again. For example, what would be a good alternative to a machine crossover using dumbbells

Shouldn't the preacher curl exercise have you seated with your armpits on top of the padding Further, the uncomfortable 'stretch' of the forearms could be controlled during the eccentric phase of the movement.
I thought keeping the back relatively straight helps to stabilize the upper body as well as force a sort isolation of the biceps for this exercise.

Off topic it would be great if Jeff could show methods and devices to use when nursing a sore or sprained muscle group. An example would be, how and when does a knees support (strap) help Or what exercises to do when exterior forearm tendon or bursitis issues arise. Compression sleeves, wrist straps to prevent wrist compression during bench maxing.

The problem with the 1st exercise, the preacher curl, is about where it produces the highest force against the biceps:
- if you keep your arms horizontally (flat)- the highest strain is at the full bicep extension - unhealthy and dangerous
- if you keep your arms vertically - the highest strain is at 90' degress arms-bent - natural and desirable

I would love to see Jessie in one of these. So you show him how to do excercise, he repeats, makes mistakes and you point them out and explain. And you ask him questions like now you feel your chest and stuff like that. Jessie is needed so I can identify myself with him. You explaining him wil work better than you explaining me through this video.

This was awesome for a beginner like me. thank you! And I KNOW you have gone over extensively about a proper bench press so that you don't hurt your shoulders. but I simply can't seem to get the right technique. my front felts are constantly hurting like painful. is there a no BS press that ONLY works your pecs With ZERO front delts
reply

I see a lot of people give Jeff grief for putting so much emphasis on face pulls, but they really do help. I've had bad shoulders for years, but I started doing these based on Jeff's advice and my shoulders are much stronger. I still do experience pain, but not as much as I used to.

This is great stuff. You reinforced a few things I'm performing well and coached up a few I'm not quite optimal on. I've injured myself with preacher curls twice. I haven't been in that forward position. I might start light and try them again.

Regarding the lat pull downs, I'm not sure that I agree. You're correct that to target the lats, use a narrower grip, but doesn't a wide grip target the terres major, the muscle that really stands out for the front lat spread

Ab pull question, I was taught before to start sitting on the ankles, also same purpose to not pull the butt back during the motion, basically starting in and holding the farthest position back. Is there any reason not to do this

13: 10 changed my life in terms of growth of the chest. While I wasn't too bad before I did notice I was leaning into the crossover too much. As soon as I started doing it properly I got sooooo much more development.
reply

Yes do more of these! I will try them tomorrow. And I have been using two ropes for face pulls for almost a year now. And a few other gym goers are following my example. Good stuff! I name drop when appropriate!

14: 22 I felt like I was literally in the gym with Jeff and him showing me all fun things that one could do with the different equipments and how to best utilize them. Would be amazing to have more of these videos!

Hey Jeff can u do a video on gaining tendon and ligament strength as an arm wrestler this is very important
I train internal rotation (side-pressure)as well but I do stretch them for long term safety reasons

reply

I suffered a distal bicep tear 2yrs ago. I had surgery 5 days later. Can you do a video on good bicep exercises for someone with my previous injury. I keep aggravating it and have nightmares of doing it again.
reply

What should you do if the foot resting on the bench during a Bulgarian split squat cramps up when pressed flat against it I like doing bulgarian split squats but my resting foot tends to cramp. Not sure why.
reply

Jeff, i want to know your opinion on barefoot shoes. The feet are the foundation of the body after all, so shouldn't you train the muscles in the feet By wearing barefoot shoes you can do that, right
reply

Great video! You made it through an entire video without any foul language. I'm' proud of you. And now I can share this video with anyone including children. Keep making videos like this, please.
reply

Really helpful tips! Like the tilting of the back foot on the split squats for better balance, I actually have it marked out on the floor so I’m always standing in the exact same spot
