my 2 interesting real life observations:
1. [PNG - rules] I've drawn a wallpaper in Illustrator and wanted to set it as my laptop wallpaper. Saved it in JPEG, FHD as my monitor resolution and it was good when I opened it in ACDSee or PS BUT! when I set it as a wallpaper it become broken like a Minimum-quality-saved-trash what ever I tried to do. I considered it is a Windows-bug-problem, but later I decided to save it i PNG and Oh Boy, it became beautiful. So here we have 2 moments - flat Illustration draws - PNG - best way. But why Windows made it with flat illustrations but saved in JPEG - I don't know.
2. [JPEG - rules] Had a situation when I needed to combine a photo with concrete color and web-created by a hex-code square of the same color [1E2939] BUT when I saved it in lossless (as I thought) PNG - the color was different, and i saw the line between my photo and the square. Then I tried JPEG and hallelujah it worked! The color was exactly the same!
So we need to understand that sometimes we need to improvise and learn theory too of course)
Thanks for theory video too, not only tutorials!

jpeg at max quality is lossless exactly like png so there's literally no difference in the data stored in the file, it will retain the exact values of all the pixels you store, you are doing something wrong.
the PNG algorithm works better with flat contiguous colors meaning that drawings and graphic designs will on average get compressed better compared to a lossless jpg, jpg works much better for photos and anything that has higher variance in values on neighbouring pixels so a photo saved in lossless jpg will probably be lighter than the same photo in png, the result though it's exactly the same. Whatever software you're using is clearly not really using maximum quality on the jpg side if pixels change. JPG at max quality is lossless

I remember one of the first times I ever started doing digital fan art, I worked really hard on it despite my skills being subpar and only working on one layer. Most notably I was proud of the background, a cave, because it was extremely detailed for my standards. After all was said and done, I saved it. as a. JPG. Big mistake. And seeing how it was my only copy of the picture, it made the visual quality even worse. Ever since I bothered to learn the difference between. JPGs and. PNGs, for artwork at least, I've stuck with. PNGs and never looked back.

lol wish i could say told you so to everyone, i've been using png for years for 99% of things i do, especially when sometimes while using JPEGs at first, i noticed my images being quite a bit worse, as i have a lot of small details in my images, so basically for many many years using photoshop i've used PNG format for nearly everything as storage space at the moment isn't really an issue now
but still my friends who also needed small detail used JPEG and i definitely noticed the difference

Thanks for this video. What i'm missing here are the now common file type like svg and webp. Would be great if you could make a video an compare all those gif, png, jpg, webp, svg. Also i missed the distinction between print and web formats. Only home users import a jpg or png in a picture as a logo. Because its totally wrong to do this. A designer use PSD or AI or something else. They want to have raw data in a lossless file format. And then export it for the different purposes.

Really I sometimes wish my phone camera could use TIFF. Not raw, just not compressed like a JPEG normally is. I am sure that if you ever looked at the difference between TIFF and JPEG, TIFF is without a doubt better for quality. The one and only downside of TIFF is the files can be really large BUT you didn't lose any detail or color depth. It will also not restore any detail that was damaged by any lossy compression either, it will just not make it worse.

You should show off a feature normies dont know about like 3d extensions. (A premium upgrade) and show how masking works. Layers and grouping and why you should use it more. (A team works on many facets. Grouping makes it easier for someone else to edit the file. You should also show how the groupware features work with adobe products. (Versioning system for graphics and video. Better than just a folder share)

very, i mean VERY important, specially when you are in a graphic workflow with sa output that going to professional printer and other output that going to web branding.
Little tip, ( globally apart about photo ) in many occasion try to use vectorial files format ( solid color, unpixelize documents, light wheigt files, solid font. )

As far as I'm concerned, the only advantage JPGs have over PNGs is the ability to store all the metadata in the file itself. It utterly mystifies me that the PNG group has never implemented that in their format. For me, that would just about make PNG perfect.

I literally just saved some jpg's, and wondered to myself why it always tries to format to png, and if there's any noticeable difference, other than png being newer. and then this pops up on my recommends. Creepy.

In case you want to add a photo with transparency on a website that you control, you could export the photo as jpg and export an opacity mask as png. That way you should get the best of both worlds.

JPEG is definitely more versatile when you need it to work on multiple platforms although I'm assuming this is about art so I'm not sure how I ended up at this video

Back when I translated manga, I would save the colored pages (usually the cover) in JPEG and the black-and-white pages in PNG for a decent quality-to-filesize ratio.

Please bring HEIF/HEIC into that equation. Afaik it should support at least 10 bit depth and compresses lossy without easy to spot artefacts like jpeg blocks

There has always been a little little better picture formats. But as it comes to storage compression abilities, jpeg has been the world standard.

I just recommended this video to my friend who wanted to start learning texturing for 3D models. He now got a quite good understanding about it: )

I remember watching Jamie Windsor's video about banding. One of the tips he recommend was editing photos in 16-bit from the standard 8-bit.

I had been wondering why some of my images had the banding. Thanks so much for this video. It really helps. I'm big on quality images.

Please, please make a video speaking about the differences between PNG and JPG for PRINTING use. 8bit vs 16bit, visual differences.
