Let's Explore some Hidden Tips and Tricks for Hair Selection and Masking in Photoshop! Cutting out hair is one of the most challenging tasks that we face in Photoshop. But, with the release of Adobe Photoshop 2015. 5 it has become easier than ever. Besides the Select and Mask feature I have got 3 more Tricks for hair selection in Photoshop. To be honest, making hair in Photoshop does have some limitations. No matter how fine you are with your selection. Doesn't matter even if you use the pen tool which might take years, you still won't be able to extract black hair from a black background. There is no machine or software or plug-in ever built that can do a perfect hair mask in Photoshop or any other software. Photoshop can never differentiate between a detailed tree and a hair. You need to make sure while taking or choosing the image that the color of the hair is in contrast with the background. Doesn't matter whether the background is a professional studio setup, a sky or even a wall, it just has to be contrasting with the hair. With the method mentioned in the video, especially using the new Select and Mask feature and 3 more Awesome tips, hair cutting in Photoshop becomes faster, easier and most importantly precise. Gone are the days when you had to select everything using the pen tool because now-a-days the automating quick selection tool is more accurate than ever. One more limiting thing with hair making in Photoshop is that, after cutting out the hair, the mask does not go with every background. Suppose you clicked a picture of the model on white background. There is no way in the history of mankind (or womankind) that you can place the selection on a black background. If you do so you will start to see fringes on the outlines of her hair. Why? because by the laws of Physics, diffraction happens and some of the light from the background (which is white) gets inside her hair. Thus impossible to remove. In the end, removing the background from hair is easy but it is much easier if you get it right while shooting the image. You might say that I'm cheating by using a white background and yes I am. After all, there is NO WAY Photoshop can distinguish between a hair and a fur

PixImperfect as a teacher or instructor seven minutes into the tutorial I see this person as a double-edged sword. On one side you get the feeling that the creator of this tutorial is very professional and very knowledgable of the program being used. He has high energy, natural to keep your attention, and with that learning seems to be a sinch. On the other side, his tutorials are going at a pace where he neglects to explain his actions. Seven minutes into the video you see him using the brush tool, and the tool changes its size. This is to squeeze into a smaller space which the previous wouldn't otherwise fit. This neglection can confuse people. Though he does reveal later in the video. Better late than never.
The description that is totally redundant and tedious because it's the same thing he said in the first two minutes of the video.
My thought on the tutorial as a whole is the creator is teaching of personal preference. It is clear he is a hair lover, and that is fine. When do you ever open up a beauty magazine or even a magazine with a random celebrity concentrating that much on extra hair? It doesn't happen in the media no matter what the source is. A haircut magazine a wedding portrait, glamour, or even personal portraits. Ninety percent of the time no one wants that extra frizz to show up. Its all about the clean, neat style when it comes to pictures such as the ones worked with this video.
Just my opinion.

Your instructions are awesome. Glad I found you.
I'm doing a photo with two horses.
Having difficulty after I hit the select and mask then use the quick selection tool.
When I go around inside the horses with a very VERY small brush in the tight spaces, it's picking up the background. Even when I go back to deselect it it's a choppy looking job. I can't get a good mask before I go to the next step to clean it up.
Getting frustrated. Wish I could paste a screen shot to show you what It looks like.

question: after using select and mask and clicking okay is there any way to go back into that same select and mask and make further refinements or is it something you have to do all over after you click on okay if you want to fix areas of selection you didn't quite get, or want to use the refine edge tool a bit more?

Thanks. Best tutorial for cutting out I've seen, and some great tips. I really dislike the new select and mask in photoshop. IMO, it is a backward step for cutting out hair, and is virtually impossible for curly hair, even on plain white backgrounds.

This video is from 2017, and I'm in 2021 now - the first time found out about this feature. Now I feel like an idiot as I've been using more complex ways to get it done. Thanks for sharing, great tutorial!
