Here's why Louis and You are dead wrong: Sometimes apple incidentally captures information. The question is: -Are they monetizing this data? - This is extremely relevant. If Apple is not collecting this data to make money, then it is innocuous and Apple would probably spend money to redesign the app to avoid capturing this data if it got enough press. The fact is: Apple doesn't want your data for anything other than possibly to research user experience. How can we be sure this is true? Simple: Apple is a publicly traded company. They disclose how they make money, and user data is not one of their revenue sources. How do we know google and facebook DO monetize your data? They disclose it publicly! This is so simple to figure out; I'm amazed Louis sees this so myopically.

Thank you for clarifying all this. Question:
I'm no longer comfortable using my old MacBook Pro (mid 2012) on the go for these kinds of reasons, as well as because I may have trusted the wrong person with it several years ago. I try to keep it offline altogether, but occasionally there is software that I want to add. Also, it would be nice to able to use it for creative purposes out in the wider world without worrying about the thing hoovering up and transmitting data on where I go and what I do with it -- even though I have nothing to hide from a legal standpoint. Is there an easy way to install a hardware kill switch for just the wireless card? How can I know for sure that my MacBook is not spying?

I think that the Linux developers will find a way to boot this new Apple processor, as soon as they can do that with Linux, someone will create a way to boot windows, then you can turn telemetry off -
I bet there would be someone who has tinycore bootable from Apples EFI implementation?
You can boot Intel Macs into the EFI and chain load grub bootloader (even from a HFS file system - unsure about apples advance format file system though) and re-enable the hardware that's been disable from running within windows?
Surely there will be experienced people around that can bypass the limitations?

Safetynet changes are about to make android phones just as bad as apple devices, since google has no interest in control -enforcement- of bootloader status verification Rooted or Custom ROM Androids will loose capability of running most mainstream software, will be even worse for people with deGoogled devices. Linux phones time to shine is overdue, we need a better option. The next phone upgrade I make will probably be an iPhone for security and leave my personal stuff to be done in a linux machine unless Linux phone pop the heck off!

It is a depressing thought but nowadays the privacy is starting to be thing of the past, something from the 90 when we still used altavista. After the whistle-blowers started to pop up and put the government in the naughty corner, the game changed.
Now even if you use older android devices, you look on every update with scepticism and with good reason. Now i am stuck with Bixby, which has access to everything and there is no way of limiting it or removing it.

If you're a writer and worried about been spied on, check out the Alphasmart Neo. Originally designed to teach typing and basic writing to kids, it connects to the outside world in only one way, by emulating a USB keyboard when you connect via USB cable. You can pick them up on eBay for about $40. They're handy in other ways too. You can read the LCD screen in full sunlight and they sip power so frugally, they run for 700 hours on three AA batteries.

Great clip RB. I junked both iPhones when I couldn't upgrade my 2012 iMac OS anymore. When Apple changes the CPU requirements on new platforms it cuts your OS upgrade path. This means you cannot upgrade iTunes and you cannot upgrade your iPhone software either.
I'll use them to make a backup battery pack for the Android phones.

Fantastic info Rod. Like you I only have Apple devices from 2009 2012 and 2013 all running old IOS 12. 4. 6/OS X 10. 9. 5. I really do believe -Big Sur- probably is exactly what one of your commentators below said, -big surveillance-! What are de-googled phones? Who makes them? Many thanks. God Bless. H
