Booting to a live Linux CD enables you to do a couple of really neat things with Linux. If you want to try out Linux and see how it feels without installing it on your hard drive then this is the way to go. Just keep in mind that it will only run in RAM so any changes you make will be removed when you shut down the OS. Another thing you can do with a live Linux instance is to browse your Windows file system when your Windows installation wont boot up and backup important files to a USB drive before formatting and starting over again with a fresh copy of Windows.
