I really like lightdm... but I think is unnecesary unless you really use it for more than just login to your user and that's it... I use ly it's as fast as you can get and yet I feel it looks great cause it's a simple TUI with the simple functionalities to log to an user and choose the WM it's great but lightdm is the second best or the best if you use more functionalities or are a user intimidated of a black screen ehehe :P

Don't know if you'll see this in the sea of comments (pun wholly intended haha), but thank you so for the work that you do. I feel like the linux community as a whole would love new users and people tinkering around with the platform but have a condescending and elitist attitude when it comes to sharing that knowledge. So thank you again, after 2 and a half days of tinkering I got Arch installed (from scratch) !

I'm using ubuntu 21.04. I have tried many ways but can't install the web greeter.
unable to locate package lightdm-webkit-greeter
and many more problems.
Somehow I managed to install the greeter but can't enable it. /etc/lightdm does not contains the files. It only has users.conf. A new directory named whither has appeared in home directory which contains a directory named web-greeter. Can somebody help?

This is supposed to work with Debian/Ubuntu -variants, but I cant get it to work with Pop OS.
The barebones default lightdm works, but as soon as you try to configure it (according to the way on this video), it crashes on boot.
Sometimes you can log in with tty5, but sometimes it wont boot at all and I had to use live-USB to mount the drive, chroot into it and then switch back to gdm3.

hen trying to enable lightdm on debian it gave the error:
The unit files have no installation config (WantedBy=, RequiredBy=, Also=,
Alias= settings in the [Install] section, and DefaultInstance= for template
units). This means they are not meant to be enabled using systemctl.
Please respond quickly as i can't currently shutdown my pc-

Everything works fine for me till lightdm. Lightdm works just if i use slick-greeter, when i try to change it to webkit2, the greeter works but when i login it shows a black screen. Anyone knows what is going on here? Sorry for the english i'm from Colombia. Gracias Saludos

My config file doesn't show up in /etc/lightdm. The only things that show up in the directory are -users.conf- and -lightdm.conf.d- which is a directory. Why isn't it working? I already disabled gdm and enabled lightdm but it doesn't work!

LightDM definitely is not -one of the best DM-, because it just sucks on Wayland-only systems. + try to -user friendly- way to configure multiple displays where some of them are in portrait mode and few of them are of different size.

Today I went down the rabbit hole of customizing my laptop and hit a wall trying to add a custom login sound.. I spent a while trying to figure that out with no luck. Is that possible to do on Linux distros? I'm running Fedora 35.

Hey, I did part of this video and realised that it is not for me. I now get an error that says [FAILED] Failed to start Light Display Manager.
I only did sudo systemctl disable sddm and sudo system ctl enable lightdm.
