Dell Made an Impressive RTX 4090: Relatively Small, Large Flow-Through, & Good Cooling

Dell's RTX 4090 comes in the Alienware R15 (and we'll soon be looking at the Alienware R16!) and uses a simple, black-and-plastic design with a large heatsink and huge flow-through area. We harvested the RTX 4090 card from the Alienware PC we reviewed previously, mostly because we wanted to check if the PCB is a reference design (there are a few this generation) so that we could install a water block on it. The good news is that it did fit our Alphacool block -- but before we removed the heatsink, we tested the thermals and noise of the Dell RTX 4090. We also look at the build quality and assembly quality in this video, and overall, we were impressed with both.

So, the Dell 1660ti included in my 2019 Lenovo prebuild, which would serve as the foundation for what I'm rocking today, was... damn well made. With a yearly clean and repaste, the thing never saw 71C and played Tarkov at 90fps. Last year for Cyber Monday, I picked up a XFX 6650XT for 200 bucks, and noticed how, out of the box, the shroud plastic felt flimsier. Performs well enough, I'm glad I purchased it for sure, but you can tell the pennies they shaved off of certain areas of the card. So yes, for the last few years of GN reporting on Dell-made RTX cards, it doesn't surprise me at all to hear that... they're pretty damn good? (Obvious hesitation because of COUGH Alienware, and Dell company antics)
Edit: Interesting! My 1660ti was also power-locked! (No more than 100% power allocation allowed in Afterburner) I should have considered that to be an OEM thing.
Edit 2: correctly pointed out, my brain just defaulted to another 3-Letter brand, it's an XFX 6650XT not a PNY 6650XT like previously stated.

Warranty void if removed stickers are only un-enforceable if the FTC actually does their job. The manufacturer can and does enforce them, because they know there's no recourse. Zotac and AsRock are both enforcing their tamper seals, because the FTC lets them get away with it and any lawsuit brought against them will QUICKLY get buried in red tape. These manufacturers know that any attempt to fight them will take years and instantly become more expensive than a replacement card

Maybe a suggestion, when mentioning and showing previews of previous video, maybe add an date to it. Probably just a month and year is good enough. I struggled to remember how many years it was since your first Dell Alienware prebuilt video, so having that shown instead of having to look it up can be useful especially on a long stretched out series on a certain topic that spans for several years. Edit: One link to the video is in the pinned comments but not the others

I bought an Alienware using mostly Dell rewards I had stacked up a few years ago for the sole purpose of pulling the 3080 and using it in my personal build back when it was virtually impossible to get one other than paying scalper pricing. I was impressed with the card. Small, quiet and ran cool enough considering it had no OC options. I did add some thermal pads to the cold plate to make contact with the vram chips which helped bring those temps down a good 8C

Hi guys I love your in-depth review of all your builds ( even the ones that really gave you pain for our entertainment). I was wondering which one I should go btw the oem reference graphics card or third party if I just want to play the game without over clocking? There s just so many versions of the 4090 alone which I can t quite decide. I do know I ll need a lot of space for adequate cooling because of their power draw

15:56 - FOR SCIENCE: Covering the Flow-Through Areas Can't believe you didn't a test with an added fan to help extract hot air and cope with the heatsink resistance (or pressure drop) to make better flow through... if SLI was still a thing new design with upper (or lateral) openings will make a good solution for a x2 SLI or x4 SLI cards put together...

I haven't seen such clean construction and ease of taking apart GPU in quite a while. As much as I hate Dell for their proprietary shenanigans, I must admit I respect this design. That's a nicely put together board with no unnecessary complexity. I guess you could flash an o/c bios on it without issues and push that power limit to 120%.

My first gaming PC was a pre-Dell Alienware. The huge alien head case with very little in the way of airflow, green :) I think it was an i5, but it got stuck to the cooler fins cause I guess they used liquid metal, I still have the cpu/finstack combo and the green case lol :) I ran EQ, FarCry, and later WoW with absolutely no issues.

Hearing that they are actually making quality components makes me imagine Dell is run like the family from Cinderella.
Alienware is Cinderella being made to live off scraps and ancient shitty hand-me-downs.
The step-sisters are the hardware devisions and the step-mom is whoever gets their kicks out of making Alienware shit.

If Dell's reputation was saved because of this once in a hundred years good thing, you guys are outta your mind. Their quality control is worse than the brand name. And their warranty is worse than some unknown Chinese company. We have to deal with these jerks daily at work and DOA servers with used servers when we paid for new.

I have a real love/hate relationship with Dell. Their business hardware (Latitudes, Precisions, Optiplexes, PowerEdges) can be found for cheap en masse from government/corporate auctions; they re super easy to service and are built to last.
As for their consumer hardware a broken clock is still right twice a day, right?

Not too surprised. Dell has usually done pretty good with video cards in general. I've also appreciated some of the things they've done for air flow control in the past. It's mostly when they try to make something look cool they screw it all up.
They should take some cues from Fractal Design on that front.

The last thing I have at Dell / Alienware is the monitor AW2721D and they can keep everything else, for their higher temperatures which reduces the lifespan, but I think that is the intention, to sell more, they used to be much better with their products but that was 25 years ago [started in 1996] seee ya

This is probably the cheapest 4090 PCB out there. 14x50A phases with all aluminum electrolyte caps for filtering. Both the caps and the chokes are through-hole soldered, which is easier for replacement, but slightly lowers the signal stability. There are some mid-grade 4080s with better VRM than this.

Dell 3080's and 3090's are good, and now the 4090. Good to see because used ones are usually the cheapest because most people don't know that they're good. I bought a used dell 3080 last october 2022 for cheap and just traded it plus 1000 for a used 4090. That dell 3080 served me well for a year.

what i find funny with dell, is that they make pretty good components, but when its alltogether, its complete shit. A bit like a cursed sandwitch : cheese is good, chocolate is good, marmelade is good, onion gings are good, ... but when you put all of these in a sandwitch, it's horrendous.

Really has me scratching my head.. I appreciate that this is better..., than what it could have been? Or what we were expecting from dell considering the alienware builds. Still, Why wouldn't dell have just used an off the shelf 4090 instead of wasting money on this... Crazy

I worked at the Dell EMC factory as employee tech support in Ireland Full access to the factory floor. Lots and lots of Foxconn cardboard boxes around. Dell wouldn't know how to build a server if their life depended on it. EMC, now that's where the real brains are.

Why does Dell put a non-transparent side panel to hide the components. This is 25% of the fun of using a (gaming) PC. Aesthetics! Why don't they just hollow out a cinder block, thow the components a weld a steel plate to the side and call it, the boat anchor?
