How to Maximize Space in a Raised Bed (High-Density Planting)

Buy the raised beds I use in my garden: If you're like me and don't have a lot of space to grow, it REALLY matters how you use the little space you have. Enter high-density planting. You can use methods like Square Foot Gardening for your spacing, but the general idea is to cram as much as you can into a small amount of space, while still retaining enough space between plants so they don't bother each other. When in doubt. plant closer together than you think. You can ALWAYS thin out, but you can't thicken out

Now why didn't I think of that? duh! I just planted my beets in rows about 4 inches apart. but eye-balled it between seeds in the row. Some came up. some didn't. but I now have a fall crop of beets. Made seed tapes from toilet paper for turnips. A pain making them but it seemed to work. tatsoi I just kind of sprinkled the seed and used a garden rake to work it into the top little bit of soil. Got some open spots and some really thick spots. Your little seed spacer would work wonders on ALL of that. I'll make one. You gave me ALL the information I need to do so plus a picture. That IS an awesome way to do it though. Thanks

Hey Kevin!
First let me say that I read your well thought out post about George Floyd. Thank you for raising your voice for what is right!
Second, do you have any tips for using high density planting in 10 gallon grow bags? Would you do it the same as you did the raised bed? I'm wondering if I should plant flowers around the edges and save the carrots, turnips and radishes for the center.
Thanks!
Happy gardening!
I did the math and each bag has 3+ square foot of space.

Ive been doing square foot gardening for a cpl yrs in my small urban community garden plot. Definitely recommend this video and that tool for anyone getting started. Lots of new gardeners lose potential yield due to not using space properly.

I just realized that I was underutilizing my raised bed. However, I guess I would have to consider watering preferences as well as pest etc. of each plant.

I have that seeding square and love it - it's especially awesome for helping my young kids participate in planting with me effectively: )

Do you use this method for all your beds? Also, what are the tree-bushes behind you? Love the videos, btw!
