Today we re in the beautiful and historic city of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, along the Red Sea coast. I m hanging out with my friend misho_baeshen and we ll be going to eat some of the best seafood in the city, exploring the old town of Al-Balad, and finishing with some local favorite foods for dinner. Al Basali Seafood Restaurant - First, the main food mission of the day is to eat some of the best seafood in Jeddah, and so we re heading to the historical area of Al-Balad to eat at Al Basali Seafood Restaurant that s been open since 1949, for three generations! They specialize in locally caught seafood from the Red Sea and all seafoods are displayed in a cabinet so you can see what you want to choose. Along with crabs, shrimp and lobster, one of the greatest fish from the Red Sea is a najel fish. The fish was deep fried and seasoned afterwards with a light blend of spices. The entire meal was fantastic, everything fresh, nothing overpowering the delicious seafood. I also really enjoyed the rice, which Hisham mentioned is only eaten when you eat fish. Al-Balad - Is the historical center of Jeddah and also a UNESCO World Heritage site. Walking through the narrow streets, it s truly magnificent to see the preservation of the old town and how it s still functioning in everyday life. We stopped at a museum and for a quick cup of Saudi coffee while we explored. Olfat Al Halawani - Motabbaq is an Arabian food that s influenced so many similar dishes around the world. To make it, they slap out thin dough, fill it with a combination of herbs, eggs, minced meat, and spices, wrap it up into a packet and cook it over a hot plate. When you eat it, you sprinkle it first with lemon, and chase it with a green chili. It was fantastic, highly recommended, and it s especially famous to eat in the evening in Jeddah. Lamb head mandi - For one more night snack we stopped at a restaurant to eat lamb head mandi, a dish where the lamb is falling off the bone - quite literally falling off the head - it s then chopped up and sprinkled with cumin and salt. Each bite melts in your mouth, from the tongue to the cheeks.

If I was eating by myself I wouldn't have a problem eating with my hands. But the fact that somebody else is eating your food with their hands as well would make me lose my appetite. Especially in a region that doesn't believe in toilet paper. Okay maybe it's different in Saudi Arabia, but while I was in Iraq I learned that you shake hands with your right hand because they wipe with their left. I thought that means with toilet paper as any western person would think. But toilet paper is expensive there and I learned and accidentally saw (because I walked in a stall that someone was using but didn't lock the door) that they use there left hand to scrape it out. The worst part was when they clean their hands (well in Iraq anyway) they grabbed rocks and dirt from the ground with water and rubbed their hands together and rinsed them off with water no soap. So I'm sorry but I ain't looking to get typhoid on my vacation! Food looks really good but ever since my experience in the middle east and knowing what I know, I don't think I could enjoy the food. Especially knowing that Health codes aren't a big priority in most of those countries.

Very Quickly before I get ready for work:
I LOVE Saudi Arabia excursions with Mark: This one in getting to know Jeddah's freshest seafood from the Red Sea incorporating the Saudi Arabian area. The Fresh fish is incomparable including the Al-Balad pre-salted Fish food from the salty Red Sea. The Najel Red Fish is the Star of The Show as Mark puts it. No marination of seasonings needed. The Basal-Onion Based Restaurant is over 75 years old and Mark has the privilege of being escorted the entire day my a gentleman from Saudi; Misho Baeshen. He was incredible on showing Mark how to collect the wonderful seafood in his hands with the incredible Basal-Onion Bread and the spices to mix in with the very flavorful rice. It is only 8 AM here in Las Vegas, NV. But I DO NOT want any eggs for breakfast. I want what Mark is eating!

You have never explained things like this before but I am begging you since it has happened too often. You are walking down the alleyway amd you said you cam smell all the smells amd aromas. I thought they were synonymous but since you made the effort to mention both, there must be a difference between the two, otherwise you would not have used both words. So please, what is the distinction bween smell amd aroma?

Mark, I have been watching you since your beginning and I thank you for sharing your experiences. However, I have two complaints. 1. I question your credibility when your tour is being paid by the foreign government or you are not paying for the food you eat. 2. what a waste of beautiful seafood when you ordered enough to feed an army. Clearly, you were not paying for it.

Fan of your stuff markwiens but giving positive exposure to a country like Saudi Arabia that treats women as second class citizens, has an absolute monarchy (with a murdering tyrant as a ruler, executes it s on citizens in the streets, etc really is poor poor judgement on your part. Would you have also done a food blog in Nazi Germany or Apartheid South Africa?

Does Mark Wiens know that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is the one who killed thousands of innocent Yemeni children and women and is the one who starves the Yemeni people through its unjust blockade of Yemeni ports, while the Saudis eat, drink and enjoy their mortal oil

Ugh, this looks epic! I so love that Mark always seeks out fresh seafood, even in places I wouldn't expect. That fresh fish, fried simply and dashed with those spices, and then dipped in tahini. c'mon now I've never had fish this way and now I absolutely need to!

Legend has it that one day Mark will eat a meal so good, he will lean all the way out of the frame.

That fish is great. Fry and cook when smaller and the taste is. No to catching parrot or rainbow fish unless you have a lot. Cleaners of ocean need them so the eco-system thrives

Mark talks food without mentioning he's been invited to SA to help them fix their reputation. Straight agitprop with Mark as a willing participant. Gross.

I spend 14 years in Jeddah and it's best food city after Istanbul in the world.
Balad (Downtown) & red sea were my weekend points.
Love from Pakistan

You should try Al-Baik especially the garlic sauce. Childhood memories, missing a lot in Jeddah when I was kid. Food is great like shawarma and yellow rice
