Sit up straight. Dont put your elbows on the table. Dont slurp your soup. The essentials of civilized behavior are hammered into diners are soon as theyre old enough to join the table, but are manners in the U. S. becoming extinct? Eater talked with etiquette expert William Hanson and our own Executive Editor Helen Rosner to find out if minding your manners is essential to civilization, or just antiquated fanfare that ostracizes the uninitiated

one of my worst evenings out ever came with an ex girlfriend and her heathen children. I and the kids wanted to go to burger king, gf insisted on a small chain restaurant called Po Folks. the kids squirmed and shouted and made a mess of their food when it finally arrived. other patrons were leaving and complaining and the manager came to tell us if we couldn't control the kids, we were welcome to have take out boxes. gf insisted that we stay. humiliating.

The executive editor needs to work on her vocal fry. Not only is it damaging to her vocal chords, it also undermines her ability to convey her thoughts on the matter effectively as it makes her sound a lot less confident in what she's saying.

LOL! I think this video was made to somehow calm the rioting that is happening over on the Disney videos with fork lady. Never taught how to use utensils makes me cringe but this video is telling us to not call her out on it.

Okay, I don't find this objectionable like the political content yesterday, but really. how does this fit with the rest of the videos here? If you don't have a video that actually fits, why don't you just not update?

Ew, the dude you have being the posher dude is terrible at etiquette. The woman and man you interview about etiquette are pretty damn good though, would like to see more from them.

Table manners are important. But, I'm not going to get on someone's case too hard if they're using the wrong fork for the dish, as long as they're holding their fork properly.

He's too rich to know the middle class and the poor doesn't have time to sit and eat at a table. They are often eating between jobs in their cars, or at their desk alone.

I don't mind anything when people eat, even if they open their mouth, it just drives me crazy when people make eating sounds, like slurping soup.

hey Eater, correct me if i'm wrong, but this and the oyster video's narrative sounds like Eater is trying to tell stories similar to how Vox does.

Who is down-voting this video? Anti-social types who have their mum bring them meals whilst they are seated in front of their computer 24/7.
