Roy Orbison should be on this list.
He suffered through so much tragedy and an addiction that all but destroyed his life, then he had a surprise comeback with the traveling willburys in 1988 that gave him a rare second chance at having a solo career, culminating in his big 1989 solo comeback mystery girl.
He poured himself into making mystery girl and worked so hard to ensure it was perfect that the stress killed him with a massive heart attack just weeks before it came out.
Upon release mystery girl immediately shot into the top 20 with it's lead single entering the top 10, at the same time the traveling willbury's first album was in the top ten and had two top ten singles.
This made roy only the second artist two have two albums and three singles in the top 20 posthumously, elvis was the first.

Fun Fact: The death of Chester Bennington was even shocking that there's even a strong connection between him and the lead singer of Soundgarden, Chris Cornell. The most important thing was the fact Bennington's death happened at the same exact date as Cornell's birthdate (July 20, with both deaths being separated in just 2 months (Cornell died on May 18, 2017. Bennington was also the godfather to Cornell's son, Christopher Nicholas, and both Bennington and Cornell had often performed together live as they're sworn friends. Bennington also performed Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah during Cornell's funeral service, along with his band's guitarist Brad Delson.

For us country music fans, how about Keith Whitley, one of the biggest country stars of the late 80s, who did not make it out of that decade alive thanks to his alcoholism. He left us at the height of his fame, his then-wife Lorrie Morgan was herself an up-and-coming country star in the late 80s (and would go on to be one of the biggest female country stars of the 90s. Whitley was hardly forgotten, he continued to top the country charts posthumously into the early 90s and hits like Don't Close Your Eyes, When You Say Nothing At All, and I'm No Stranger to the Rain remain staples of classic country radio to this day.

Came here not just for the thumbnail, but also in response to Chester’s successor Emily Armstrong. I was crushed when that tragic day occurred in July 2017. I remembered where I was when I heard the news. Volunteering at San Diego Comic-Con and Black Eyed Peas were there (minus Fergie) promoting their comic book. They spoke of his passing as he once toured with them. That made my stomach drop. It was Linkin Park’s music that always turned my mood around whenever I was sad or upset. Got me through tough times in my early days of high school.

Michael Jackson's death had a huge impact on me obviously. At first I thought it was some kind of sick joke but by Friday afternoon (as I was in high school) I watched the news and they reported that it was not a joke that he had actually died and I was in utter disbelief. Rest in Peace Michael miss you always.
Other artists that deserve a mention are: Prince, Whitney Houston, Chris Cornell, David Bowie, Aaliyah, Taylor Hawkins, George Michael, Lisa Marie Presley, Lisa Left Eye Lopes and Irene Cara.

Shocked both Janis Joplin and Karen Carpenter were left off this list. Both had uniquely haunting voices that have never been replicated again. Karen's untimely death at 32, shocked the world and brought a whole new light to eating disorders of young women. Women who did horrific things to themselves in order to try and live up to a unobtainable body image put forth by film and magazines. Who knew the term Anorexia Nervosa before Karen

I am shocked that the late, great Barry White, the deep voiced singer, songwriter and arranger, was not on this list. With hits like You're The First, The Last, My Everything and instrumental hits like Love's Theme, he had dominated the music charts throughout the 70s with the Love Unlimited Orchestra (who had records produced by White and friend Gene Page. He passed away from kidney failure at the age of 59 in 2003.

Actually shocked nobody has mentioned Dimebag. Dude was one of if not the greatest metal guitarist of all time and was tragically murdered on stage while performing. To this day no musician death has quite SHOCKED me to the degree that Dime's death did, Dude was such a sweetheart, Absolutely did NOT deserve to go out like that, At least he died doing what he loved, RIP Dime & Vinnie.

So many legends. Freddie Mercury, Elvis, Amy(her concert in Belgrade was a disaster, she came on stage drunk) after she went down incredibly fast. Who would thought she died in 2011 Michael Jackson. Whitney should be on the list too. I think it's ok John Lennon to be number 1. Though it's tie between him and Michael I think. Great video

Personally, I feel that those who were taken away from us by accident or murder are the most impactful. They had potentially many, many more years of music to give us. As for those who died of overdose. Sadly, it's hard to stop such a downward spiral, especially once they've passed the event horizon of their illness.

You definitely need to make another list. You left a lot of names off of it. Chris Cornell, Dimebag Darrell, Lemmy, Randy Rhoades, Layne Staley, David Bowie, Jim Morrison and so many more I suppose because mine are rockers that explains why they are missing ( most mainstream are biased against rockers)
reply

Juice Wrld was open about his struggles and let people know that they weren't and aren't alone. Changing his lyrics during concerts and never writing a single sheet of lyrics, it all came to him in the studio. What a legend, like everyone else both in and not in this list this dude was gone to soon

Honestly Michael Jackson death should've been number one, his passing crashed the Internet and had the biggest watched memorial service in history. It was being played in movie theaters around the world and the united states Congress even held a moment of silence in his honor and memory

Amy Winehouse was the most shocking for me personally. She still to this day is one of my favorite artists of all time and Back To Black is my favorite album of all time. She would have turned 41 yesterday and it's so tragic she wasn't here to celebrate it. R. I. P. and Fly High Amy.

Tupac's death still hurts even to this day. If he were still alive he would be the rap king, alongside Notorious BIG. RIP to all the other legendary rappers too like Eazy E, Jam master jay, Big Pun, Heavy D, coolio, DMX, Lisa 'left eye' Lopes, ODB and just recently Fatman Scoop.
