Thats why his mother abandoned him. She would have known that she could not raise him. Mother Nature is so much more intelligent than a human. I knew someone who tried to raise 7 labrador puppies after their mother rejected them. Despite doing everything they all died. The mother knew, as did Mother Nature. Sad, but that life. But well done, a great story. But lets hope he does not breed.

For anyone who runs across a wild mammal, never feed cow milk. Always goats milk. You can slowly add soaked kibble. When they're tiny, you can use the water portion of the soaked kibble (1/2 & 1/2 milk/kibble water) graduating to kibble soaked in goat milk, diluted by 3rds (1/3 dilute, working up to 2/3 etc) you can feed birds soaked kibble as well.

Aw. I know the feeling. My daughter was born 5 weeks early and weighed 6lbs 1oz. After a week in the NICU, she was 5. 5lbs. I got her home, and it was obvious something was wrong. I switched her to a soy-based formula and boom, all was well. Until she got diagnosed with Celiac Disease at one year of age and had to go gluten-free for life.

The only problem is rocky passing on the genetic propensity for lactose intolerance and other babies being born this way but without the good fortune of being found by your foster beagle. I think I would try to ensure he couldn't make babies! Vasectomy for the red squirrel He is adorable!

Wow! Pretty amazing to figure that out! I’ve raised three at different times from them falling out of trees and not being gathered up by their mama. Each one was so much fun. They do tend to cling to the one who bottle feeds them.

No lie, skinny Rocky reminds me of my grandson, who just isn’t interested in food. You have to sorta bribe him to take three more bites. He’s six now and just the skinniest guy ever! In first grade and very smart. But skinny.

Wait, what Lactose intolerant is pretty normal. Most animals would be lactose intolerant and most humans are, too. The dairy industry has done a great job of tricking people into thinking cow milk is essential.

Thank you very much for being inquisitive and talking to the vet about him, not gaining the weight and figuring out that he was lactose intolerant. What a beautiful story and a beautiful squirrel.

Rocky is wirhout a doubt the CUTEST thing I have ever seen! The cuteness is destroying me! So much cute, am gonna be poisoned by it. As for letting him go Nope. Not me. I couldn't do it!

I mean, not for nothing, but is it all that wise of an idea to send a fertile, lactose intolerant squirrel out there to potentially have babies that end up dying anyways, just like _should_ _have_.

We saved 2 baby squirrels from a nest in a tree we cut down last year. Momma disappeared and didn’t come back for them. We kept them for about 12 weeks. They were hilarious but WILD.

Lactose intolerance can be very well hereditary, so this would make things worse for squirrels.

I do opossums and they tend to be lactose intolerant. I use the liquid infant drops in the formula and it works for them.
