Hypotenuse: While I definitely agree the instrumentals are certainly the most consistent/coordinated with regards to sound palette, and it definitely manages to come in my top 4 (there's some personal favoritism toward FFTA in the mix, and holy hell is FF7R good, my vote goes for FFXIV. It's probably unfair to compare a vast, current MMO to a GameCube-now-rerelease, but like, I think due to the mixing of magic and technology we do get to experience music involving instruments of all sorts, and we get the benefit of seeing themes/leitmotifs employed in different contexts with different instrumentations to evoke different emotions, and there's something super magical about that. Not to say the CC instrumentals don't do that too, but some of the stuff in FFXIV is so powerful I still get emotional reactions hearing it out of game and out of context.

Hypotenuse - Although I don't know if it has the best Final Fantasy music, that soundtrack is definitely amazing. I never made a list of the best Final Fantasy soundtracks, but that one would definitely be in the top ones (along with FF12 and FF6.
That being said, I wanted to share with you my thought about something you said. You said that the soundtrack was very medieval but, I always thought it was inspired more by the Renaissance period to my hears. Music in the middle ages had similar instrument, but it was way more monophonic (and vocal. It really sounds like music derivated from the time of Maximilian 1st (born in 1459.
Just a thought. I might be wrong.

I agree wholeheartedly. I love so many FF soundtracks, and my relation with the GAME Crystal Chronicles is complicated - I LOVE it, but I HATE how the multiplayer was a truncated gimmicky thing with GBAs that was so hard to do, and then they made it even worse in the remaster with no local co-op whatsoever; it seems square just doesn't know to do this game justice - I have to say the CC soundtrack is one of the best in all of gaming.
The opening main theme alone is already MASTERPIECE. Yes, this game has the best soundtrack of all Final Fantasy games. Yes, this is a bold statement because the series has incredible music, but it is true. The CC soundtrack is the best.

I've been playing through the remake on PS4, and I agree. The music is really good!
But that desert. Heaven's above that desert level! The flutes were so in your face and loud. Gave me a head ache every time.
It didn't help that it's a big level and you could be stuck there for more than an hour depending on what your goal is for your playing session.
Tangent aside, the other music is spectacular and I've loved the opening sequence theme ever since I played it on the gamecube.

Please please please talk more about the music in Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles. All three. GameCube, Gameboy Advanced, and the Nintendo Wii. Crystal Chronicles hands down has the best music out of the entire Final Fantasy franchise. And I absolutely love FF9. They introduced my boy Vivi in that game. But Crystal Chronicles has music that just draws the mind in. It breathes the life of Questing into your bones and blood again. As you said, an Ancient feeling.

I remember seeing the video (Trailer? Intro) with everyone getting ready for the journey. It got me immersed into the fantasy instantly. I am someone who never clicked with FF (all the respect to the franchise and its fans. But the video (which was made superb by its music) convinced me in a moment I was playing this FF. As you say, it-s an imperfect game, but dang I hold fond memories mostly due to its vibes and music.
Thanks for this video.

Hypotenuse. Although I will grant that this is because I am a character person when it comes to RPGs, and Final Fantasy 6 uses its music in a magical way to convey not only the personality of its characters, but their growth and evolution both as a character and with their companions throughout the game. Solid work though dude, thanks for sharing. I will be buying the remaster and will give the soundtrack a more fair shot this time around as well.

Big agree. I love Tanioka and how the FFCC music sets the stage for the game.
Speaking of her work in FF11, that game also has a top notch soundtrack thanks to its arrangement. It's not unified on instrumentation throughout the entire game, but rather regionally. For example, anything with synths probably has to do with the ancient advanced civilization.

Ahh another fellow human who probably grew up replaying FF: CC music on repeat for years. FF: CC OST is one album I go back and listen to at least once a year! I'm not exaggerating. Everything you said was spot on how I feel about it too. I agree that the game was fun but not the best. However, the music is what keeps the memory of this game strong and alive for me.

I'm interested to see, with the new re-release, how much they change the music. I hope with all my heart it's 0% changed, I personally loved the old style, and if they take away all that originality and just ochestra it beyond recognition, I'm gonna be pretty dissapointed. As it stands, the re-mix of the opening song is. Dissapointing. :/
Hypotenuse.

I just love that this popped up in my recommends. Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles is by far, my favorite. Mostly from a nostalgia standpoint, but regardless, the music, the settings, the characters, the world. It was all so wonderful. I absolutely agree with you, that the Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles music is the best. It's so unique.

Hypotenuse - I just wanted to make sure you read my comment. :p
I agree completely. I love certain games and soundtracks, but FFCC did it the best for feeling immersed. Do you have a Discord Server by any chance? If so, making a room for others looking for playing partners could be a great way to mix and match parties.

I think FFXII has such a good soundtrack for some of the same reasons Brian loves Crystal Chronicles. Immersion? THE WHEN? Sakimoto made his own universe (Ivalice) within the FF -canon- (if you can call it that! I love that. They're both such good composers (no shade to Uematsu, Hamauzu, or any other FF co-composers out there)

Hypotenuse, cause Crystal Chronicles is a fantastic game and I've never experienced anything similar in any game.
The sense of discovery and adventure while playing was fantastic and solving the riddles, actually changing the world gave me a feeling no game ever recreated.
To me it was the almost perfect co-op RPG.

I was like 10 when I watched my sister play this game, and the music has been a core memory for video game music my whole life since then. I never even played this game myself but hearing its music brings be back to a state of childlike wonder. I just saw this video now after it being out for 5 years and I could not agree more.

Though I haven-t played Crystal Chronicles, it seems that the -sound design- is what makes the music memorable. It certainly helps that Tanioka used instruments that would be appropriate in the world of the game. I-d be interested to learn how Tanioka worked with sound designers/editors.

Hypotneus but with love! CC was amazing and the music was amazing but I will shill for the MMO gods and say that FF 14 also knocked it out of the park. But you also have to give it a huge chunk of time to get that payoff. I really should play CC again thougg

I always thought that what was cool about the music was that I could envision that the party (or those they save) are capable or potentially canonically those who are/could be making the music telling of the adventure amongst the caravan around a fire.

I agree with you. Crystal Chronicles was my first Final Fantasy game, and I'm currently experiencing it again with the Remastered. Though I'm split between Crystal Chronicles and Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time as my favorite Final Fantasy.

Aw, this makes me super upset all over again with how Square Enix ruined the Crystal Chronicles remaster by destroying the multiplayer progression as part of some absolutely braindead cash grab strategy of trying to build in micro transactions.

I forgot this game to the point that I started humming tunes from it the other day and thought I made them up. Then I remembered, then I searched and found this video.
FFVIII is my favorite game soundtrack but CC is a close second.

I got this game as a teen and I played it in multiplayer and these songs. these songs! These wind instruments, I went to bed listening to it often. That translated main theme by Donna Burke doesn't do justice to the original.

hypotenuse: I don't disagree, but I think it's an overstatement, how does Final Fantasy XII compare in your top? It can't be far because I see much similarity with your arguments for both games.
Cool video, thanks!

I actually agree with your Hypotenuse, and also wanted to shout out Masayoshi Soken for their work on FFXIV's amazing soundtrack as well. FFCC and 14 are probably my top 2 FF games as far as music goes.

This video makes me miss the nintendo power issues. I was drawn in by the art work in the magazine and blown away by the music in the trailer. The music is the soul behind the game.

I hated FF: CC but you've tempted me to consider the Switch remake.
It does help that I have friends with nintendo consoles, now.
