The magic stuff reminds me of a DS game that was kind of. champion-based RTS-ish, if I remember correctly? It was called Lost Magic, I think, and it wasn't exactly my favorite thing - it left a lot to be desired - but I do remember it having a cool system of casting different spells with drawing different symbols, and I think there was maybe something about combining spells too? It's been ages since I played, though, I could be misremembering that. Did anyone else ever play that?

Nobody's mentioned Arx Fatalis yet, the entire magic system is writing out runes and it makes you feel like you're really spootin magic bits out! Made in 2002, overshadowed by Morrowind, it's like 5 bucks on steam and needs a single dev snapshot patch to work well, try it.

Re: Magic casting where you have to do something, the Ni No Kuni NDS game that never got an english release came with like a whole spellbook because you had to draw little runes on the touch screen to cast different spells and there were a ton of them
