I've seen most of these films, some I haven't seen and some of them I've heard of but I agree with how everyone feels on each one. E. T. was something I don't have a lot of memory on but the 80s was full of kids films that had sad endings. I remember Jack Frost but my emotions were strong enough to handle such a film's ending at the time. All Dogs Go To Heaven, maybe as a kid I wasn't emotional but now I am after so many years. Mainly because it was part of my childhood and I miss my childhood but also because of what happened to Judith Barsi and her mother and that the father was responsible for what happened to them and that he took his own life and how it took a toll on them. That was more heart breaking. Charlotte's Web though, as a kid, I didn't get emotional when the ending was the way it was but than years later now, my heart breaks since as a kid, I couldn't get emotional about it but now I am after all these years. The Fox and the Hound, it was heart breaking for me when Todd was released into the wild for his own safety but the ending left me heart broken, as a kid, I didn't get emotional but now, as an adult, now it causes me to breakdown. Old Yeller, my memory is distant on the film but part of me wonders why did they have to make the ending of the film so heart breaking. Toy Story 3, even though I was starting my 20s at the time they did that one, the whole time I was trying not to get emotional but than the ending came and it left me in tears when Andy was going off to college and what he said about Woody and what Woody said when he and the toys were watching him drive off, it got me everytime.

I do remember seeing both Charlotte's web and the fox and the hound. both did indeed pull hard on the ol heart strings. but for me, the fox and the hound hit a little bit closer to home simply because I had a friend from long past. one of my very few when I was young. for a number of years, he was the only one I had. The fox and the hound is a pair of friends pulled apart merely by circumstance because not for what they are, but for how others told them they should be.
The others I can sympathize with having not seen them all, but even only seeing these small bits. I can remember being a child. and at times, the heartache that always seemed to follow me around from one loss to the next. Some worse then others. But as with these too, one must get through those bad times to be there when the good ones make more of that old hurt shrink so it doesn't hurt as much.
Another classic that I do love is The Iron Giant. yes, in the end the Giant survives. and you know he'll be back. but I, for one, when I first watched it. over the course of 3 times, things kept pulling me away ( doctors appointment or some other such bit ) so that I could never get to the end.
BUT when I DID see the end. right up to where the Giant sacrifices himself while you hear You are what You Choose To Be. I was about ready to scream during crying for what he gave to ensure his human friends and all the others could go on living. But I couldn't. I was actually too shocked to see that after all that. he died doing what was right and good'

I am shocked that Marley And Me wasn't in this countdown. It's so devastating to watch the ending and I just can't watch this movie anymore because I break down and sob like crazy. Owen Wilson was good in this though and his performance was quite touching. Prancer made me cry at the end. Prancer was that little girl's best friend but she knew that he had to go back and be with the other reindeer. This film was one of my favorite Christmas movies growing up and I like it now as an adult even more. It has beautiful scenery, a real Christmas feeling to it and a wonderfully over the top performance by Cloris Leachman. Sam Elliott does a good job also as the gruff but concerned widowed father of the little girl. Also, ET should be much higher than number eight. This movie was my childhood and still turns on the waterworks to this day. It is Spielberg's greatest achievement. And even though it has technically a happy ending The Secret Of Nimh's ending was very bittersweet considering all that Mrs. Brisby had to go through to save her children and the rats that she had to save had to leave knowing the hardships they went through. That film scared the daylights out of me as a kid. Shannon Doherty and Will Weaton did the voices of two of the Brisby children.

The Fox and The Hound was and is one of my favourites movies. I always cry and sob with it. Not even The Lion King made me really cry, but this movie, oh my god. It will always have a special part in my heart.
We met, it seems, such a short time ago
You looked at me, needing me so
Yet from your sadness
Our happiness grew
And I found out I needed you too
I remember how we used to play
I recall those rainy days
The fire's glow
That kept us warm
And now I find, we're both alone
Goodbye may seem forever
Farewell is like the end
But in my heart is a memory
And there you'll always be
Goodbye may seem forever
Farewell is like the end
But in my heart is a memory
And there you'll always be

Another example of a bittersweet ending I'd count in here is the end of the Good Dinosaur. SPOILERS BELOW
IK a lot of people hate this movie, but I just think it would fit perfectly into this list because A: Arlo may never see his only friend (Spot) again after their final goodbye, and B: Arlo's poppa isn't there anymore, so he might feel alone without him. Yes, I know he returns home to his family like he's supposed to and makes his mark (the muddy footprint on a rock. I just had to mention this ending, especially for this list specifically. It's not an All is Lost sad ending, but it's not entirely happy either.

I watched bridge to Terabithia for the first time as an adult with my 8 year old niece who is very innocent and positive, when it got to that point, I was internally sobbing but holding it in for the kid, who next decides to believe for the entire movie that she isn't really dead and there's some twist happy ending like the disney movies because disney movies never have sad endings like she says, I still have no idea what she thought when the movie ended without seeing the girl come back.

LOL! I HATE Fox and the Hound! I first saw it when I was 4, and it upset me so much that i yelled at my mom and told her to NEVER get that movie again! Lol, into adulthood, it's traumatized me so much I still haven't gone back. I attempted to show it to my daughter, she got to the part where she leaves him in the woods and she screamed at me to turn it off. My son didn't get much farther.

E. T. was Steven Spielbergs childhood imaginary friend that he made up when his parents went through a divorce. When he grew up and started directing movies, he decided to put E. T. in a movie and the result was a huge successwell except for the infamous video game based on it and an unfortunate McDonalds promotion!

The first time I watched Toy Story 3, I thought the scene with the toys accepting their end in the incinerator would be the most emotional moment in the movie. Until the final sequence between Andy and Bonnie begins.

Bridge to terrabithia is beyond sad. I read the book in school and it made me cry. The chapter where Jessie finds out she is dead is titled No. And it's about how he's in denial that she's even dead.
