Star Trek: Picard Kept Its TNG Crew Alive For One Bold Reason

I think because of many years of stories where the good guys always made it out of every situation, many modern writers have let the pendulum swing too far the other way all too often. Gritty and more serious shows and movies have now made, what was once the shock value of killing off some of the good guys, into a whole new troupe. You basically expect now that at least some of the main characters that you care about will die in the end. To me this is just lazy storytelling to assume that a character must die to conclude their arc. Star Trek has made this mistake before, and ultimately it never feels right. Data is a good example, he was killed off in Nemesis for what real reason? from the beginning, he strived to be human. It was a far more satisfying conclusion for his arc to finally get to basically experience this, than to get blown to bits to save PIcard in Nemesis. I think that in a good story, a character needs to grow, develop, and ultimately achieve/overcome what the obstacles they faced in the beginning. If they finally are at a point where their contribution to the story has ended and they are at peace, there is nothing wrong with letting them live happily ever after beyond that. Kirk is a good example of this, they treated his character like he was just in the way and they needed to quickly get him out of the picture to pass the torch. After all those years he could have just came to peace with where he was, maybe fall in love and settle down in the cabin from the Nexus in the real world, or just taken off on his own like Scotty did. My point is that it was nice to see that the writers actually let these characters conclude this chapter so they can move on to something else, instead of just killing them off because they are in the way of the younger characters. Not every character arc needs to be tragic. I think they handled this well, and I would include the Enterprise D as being a character as well in this sense. It may be retired, but it deserved a better ending than to be blown up, crashed and abandoned on a random planet. The writers gave it the perfect conclusion as well. As for RO and Shelby, RIP. Sucks for them, but they weren't main characters.

it doesn't seem too unbelievable that all the main characters survived. or at least not any more unbelievable that main characters survive episode after episode in a multi year run of a show it seemed surprisingly clean too since the assimilation was instantly reversible. though i wonder how many people died over all the ships and on spacedock during the attack (did spacedock get vaporized or just. somehow deactivated. hm since all the ships were taken over except one. and every drone had the order to kill all unassimilated, does that mean everyone over the age of 25 on board every starfleet vessel died? that'd be a huge shift in the fleets demographics afterward. [if true not sure how much of a happy ending that was ]

As far as the TNG cast returning in the future. .. Picard would be good for a guest role to further Jack's story in a spin-off and the same could be said for Geordi too. Riker and Troi I can take it or leave it. Crusher would be cool to have back in a guest role too for a similar reason to Picard. Data though, I think Spiner should call this his swan song and be done with the franchise. He's had the most involvement with many of the series. Worf is the one I'd most want back frankly. .. you know perhaps a show set with him as Captain of the Enterprise-E? Okay that might be asking for too much on that one but an animated series of that would be amazing. Generally, Worf and Geordi are the ones I want back most.

I wouldnt mind a couple years pause now to really focus on writing, story and budget for a future Legacy or Titan series.
My 2 Hopes are:
1, they have recurring roles from Legacy characters, especially bringing in Kate Mulgrew as Janeway. I'd love to see her and seven back on screen together.
2, a return to a more serious, professional starfleet. Recent Trek has been too childish and over emotional resulting in chaos and lack of discipline. Bring back the authority of previous Starfleet!

well the main reason why the tng crew are still alive is it to keep the star trek beta conutity of startrek online. this is due to that being canocly takeing place in the main prime timeline and alot of the tng crew are super inporent for the prime timeline for a very long time for alot of importnt plot points. also beta canon is still official canon but its nomraly reserved for needing a fallback for expalnig things behind the scenes.

Trek has never really been into offing main characters just for the sake of killing main characters. Usually the permadeath of a main character is due to the actor wanting to leave the show (Dense Crosby, Terry Farrell, even Leonard Nimoy originally planning to leave the franchise after TWOK, and when they have done so with Data in Nemesis and Trip Tucker in Enterprise, it felt hollow, unsatisfying, and unnecessary.

When Picard worf and Riker left the bridge to go to the cube it hit me so hard I legit thought one or all of them were going to die. That episode was so incredible I have never in my life watched an episode of TV that gave me such varying emotional reactions all at once. I am so happy that none of them died and I hope so much that we get to see Star Trek: Legacy we need it

Data died multiple times and the replica with Data's memories os not Data, it is something that useed to contain what Data was, but this new thing was never limited to just Data. Data has had many deaths - the point - TNG crew didn't all live, Tasha is still dead, we have no idea what happened to Dr Polaski (who served longer than Tasha. And why are you so death obsessed?

This season was REALLY, REALLY good!
I completely expected either Picard or Riker to sacrifice themselves for the others or LaForge and Data to do the same!
Season 1 and 2 were horrendous for me! But, Patrick Steward and Jonathan Frakes absolutely killed it in season 3 and most definitely showed what they can STILL do with well-written material!

I liked the happy ending. I used to look to Star Trek to be uplifted, taught, and given a hopeful view of the future where we all get along and work together toward a common goal. That hasn't been the case in the Kurtzman Trek, though. I hope they give Matalas his own show and let him do his thing. He seems to understand Star Trek much better.

I hope Geordie continues his retrofit of the D, and Will Riker gets his turn at the seat of the flagship of the Federation. She proved she s still an amazing vessel, and deserved of coming back into service. I mean, we lost a lot of ships, so there is always a need for an Enterprise. Give the Titan her name back- that was silly, anyhow.

It was nice to see them all, I wish they would do an entire series using the TNG crew, but I'm guessing they are perhaps a bit too old for it and the company probably can't afford all those stars.
Apparently the reason Janeway wasn't seen in the season 3 of Picard was due to budget reasons.

I just hated most of the season altogether, and I hope everything stops here with the TNG cast. The entire thing was just poorly plotted and poorly paced, focused on hitting that nostalgia button while taking no risks, saying nothing new, and having little character growth.

Most of the next generation actors are not working since they sadly got typecast like the original actors from TOS. With only Kirk Sulu and Chekhov still alive from the original series; Next Generation became the OG by default. I hope they get more work in front of the camera.
