Federation Officer Shapiro crash-lands on a desert planet with no sign of water, life, or a way off. Her crew-mate Rand is no help, resigned to his fate on the hypnotic alien dunes. Locating the ship's emergency beacon is their only hope, but when a salvage crew answers their distress signal, it's already too late. Beachworld by Jackie Perez Connect with the Filmmakers: More About Beachworld: Beachworld is an adaptation of a Stephen King’s short story as part of his Dollar Baby program. Lieutenant Shapiro’s ship is destroyed in a crash on a deserted desert planet covered in sand dunes. As she begins to understand the severity of her situation, she sets out to discover other survivors and formulate a rescue plan. Her crewmate Rand is alive, but spellbound by his new surroundings. It’s up to her alone to figure out how to get back home. She finds their ship’s emergency beacon, and an unsavory salvage crew answers their distress call. Ultimately, their rescue comes too late as Shapiro has succumbed to the planet’s hypnotizing effect. Beachworld

Didn't work for me.
I'm 3: 24 into the film.
The woman has pulled a huge shard of glass out of her calf, seeping blood. Did not clean or bandage. Yet it has very little impact on her walking. It's like a stone in her shoe.
She goes by the wreck of a craft and finds a dismembered hand, screams, then shrugs it off completely.
Comes upon a man who despite the crash and no visible food or water is sitting blissed out. She doesn't seem troubled by how crazy that is. She finds she can read his mind and he can read hers. And she has no strong reaction, no fear of being violated, no fear of how alien that is. She just sits down next to the guy to chat.
The film doesn't show common human reactions and emotions as I understand them.

They say most of your brain shuts down in cryo-sleep. All but the primitive side, the animal side. No wonder I'm still awake. Transporting me with civilians. Sounded like 40, 40-plus. Heard an Arab voice. Some hoodoo holy man, probably on his way to New Mecca. But what route What route I smelt a woman. Sweat, boots, tool belt, leather. Prospector type. Free settlers. And they only take the back roads. And here's my real problem. Mr. Johns. the blue-eyed devil. Planning on taking me back to slam. only this time he picked a ghost lane. A long time between stops. A long time for something to go wrong.

The song near the end is perfect. It starts faintly and is actually Where is my Mind. Perfect for the twist. Of course it morphed into different lyrics and a different song. It is in fact the same chord progressions as the Pixies. Just cool! It happens just as the twist and action begins. Great job by the person doing the sound track. I can’t think of the correct term for that. I’m just a simple musician.

I don’t know Steven King so can’t comment. But the title fits. Desert. All desert hence beach world. Obviously it’s got some power over her. Maybe what she injected made no pain so she could walk better. Must be some pretty strong stuff. There must be something odd about this world that made her crazy and accounts for the telepathy scene. It was fair. Not all Dusts are spectacular.

Opening credits said based on story by Stephen King. As in that Stephen King If yes, then why did DUST frame it as sci-fi Stephen King's novels\stories, so far I have come across, can be mysteries, definitely horror but never sci-fi. That I think is most probably the reason why you are getting negative reactions maybe. If you ask a horror fans to watch it, perhaps it would do better.

You took everything good in the original story and replaced it with an over-the-top psycho-slasher that added NOTHING to the plot. I'm left wondering why (aside from copyright dictates) it's called Beachworld at all, since the planet is little more than a backdrop. You might as well have called this Scream. in Spaaaace! (without the fun parts)

This film is too short, it's too strange, there's not enough background to explain everything, it's bloody, it's ugly and it makes absolutely no sense. The music at the end is even more of a disconnect to everything that already wasn't working together.

My wife just explained the Stephen King story to me. I agree with her that this dropped all the good parts that made it work as a story. I guess it would have been too expensive to film for a small time crew

Minute point. I don't understand her shadow at 5: 46 where she injects herself and passes out. How can the sun make such shadow on the sand. I see the edge of the box, but still, the rest makes no sense.

To those who criticize this: Just because this is not predictable, action packed, or filled with an obvious world does not mean it is bad. It is merely different. It is an excellent adaptation.
reply

It seemed like bits and pieces of a possible story here, but the dots just don't quite connect here. Maybe a bit more development, try it again later when the story is a bit more fleshed out.
reply

Hell's sake, it was two MALE surviving crewmen trapped on a desert planet 8000 years into the blood future. How hard is it to follow that kind of plot for an ACCURATE adaptation. Fckin' diversity.
reply

human mechanics being what they are i find it hard to follow female protagonists along while male counterparts give up easily.
this is a trend, not just in this flick.

reply

This one was totally confusing. I just didn't get it. Also not a fan of the blood. But I usually LOVE Dust and I feel bad writing comment. Just some honest feedback.
reply

The rescue ship captain reminded me of Tyrone from Chapelle show This wasn’t a bad thing, but the movie generally wasn’t among the best shorts available on Dust.
reply

I believe in the original story the sand is sentient, and at one point there's a giant sand hand. Nonetheless anything Stephen King related has my support.
reply

Other than the beach-like planet, this short really didn’t go with Stephen King’s story. Would love to see a short of Mrs. Todd’s shortcut though.
reply

Given the expansive raw feel, it’s hard to believe this was done on a shoestring budget. Bravo! It’s all a matter of perspective.
reply

I don't want to add another negative comment, but please learn to tell a story before making a film. this was really pointless.

That leg of hers healed quick!
One moment she pulls out a piece of metal.
The next moment she runs like a bunny.

reply

to make a sci fi movie in outer space without utter machine failure being a center point would be as epic as starwars.
reply

How come the film industry keeps feeding us so much CRAP when all this jokers make such good film w/almost no money
reply

Dried snot under a grumpy spaceship captain's nose and Mountain Dew hallucinations.
That's about it.

reply

Every person making a movie of a Stephen King story-
This stories amazing! Ima change everything about it

reply

Not great, unless I'm missing something, which is entirely possible. They can't all be winners though.
reply

It's my fault. My mental acuity apparently isn't what it once was. I was lost at sea on this beachfront.
reply

Illogical ending. She should have stayed where she was; where she would have a little shelter.
reply

UN-satisfying; no sense, no plot, no reason to be. sad and disappointing to say the very least.
reply

If there's no ocean, it can't be a beach, right Call it Arrakis, Tattooine, Dune, whatever.
reply

I liked it don’t know the story biased on. She is with the beech magic All possibility
reply

I'm curious how you got around the distribution restrictions in the dollar baby contract.
reply

so. can anyone guess who the affirmative hire was
but the ending song was cool AF.

reply

some really high quality stuff here. perhaps budget limiting breached the conclusion.
reply

I thought you weren't supposed to post dollar baby shorts publicly. Only film festivals.
reply

I liked the music at the end of the film. I wonder if she ever found a beach.
