In a next-generation prison, inmates are corrected over a few days by an A. I. linked to their consciousness. Cyrus, a lonely parole officer, becomes obsessed with Alice a sociopathic inmate that the A. I. seems unable to reform. Corrections by Nick Tucker More About Corrections: In a future prison, inmates are not locked up for years they’re connected to an accelerated simulation that allows them to serve their entire sentence in a few days. What these inmates don't know is that before they're released, they undergo a Parole Simulation that seems utterly real and their moral resolve is tested in their most private moments. In this way, only the truly reformed are deemed corrected and released back into society. Cyrus, a lonely parole technician, becomes obsessed with Alice an alluring and sociopathic inmate that the system seems unable to reform. While most inmates are corrected and released quickly, Alice has failed nearly a thousand Parole Simulations. Cyrus tries convincing Alice to undergo a procedure that will radically alter her personality, so she can finally be corrected and released. But Alice has her own plans. Despite having her memory wiped between Parole Simulations, she gets to Cyrus seducing him and chipping away at his sanity until it's not clear who has the upper hand. A message from the filmmaker: Corrections is a story about a world of nearly complete state surveillance, a world that has abandoned trust for security a world distressingly similar to our own. I wrote Corrections as a way to examine issues of surveillance, privacy, and the role they play in how we make choices. How can we be our true self when we're constantly under the eyes of others We like to think that surveillance can only reveal people's true character, but the pressure of constant observation has just as much power to influence how we behave and think of ourselves. Corrections is also about relationships between people, the way we exert power over others in surprising ways, and how we make ourselves into victims, or victimizers, without realizing it. Cyrus and Alice are locked in a power struggle, their drives and weaknesses conspiring to create a truly toxic relationship. I want the film to leave viewers wondering if it's possible to truly correct people, and if we really want to live in a world where there's no room for the people we can't fix

I love films with this much depth! Showing the manipulative power the psychopathic mindset has over normal brain function, making it void of a conscience, emotions, empathy, boundary awareness of others and personal responsibility.
The entire video was about physical incarceration and virtual role playing (simulations) to put the inmate in various tempting situations. The only memory that was purged was the conversation with the parole officer. (3: 25 - 50. The two most powerful vices that a psychopath has are manipulation and not accepting responsibility for the consequences of their actions; and this film did both superbly.
The lack of responsibility is illustrated by the male inmate projecting all those antisocial behaviors onto his female parole officer. By doing that he didnt have to take responsibility because in his mind he wasnt perpetrating the crimes, she was. The other Hallmark quality is manipulation which was shown in his dreams, when he projected his actions onto his parole officer, using seduction in an attempt to gain release.
Nick Turner, I applaud you for your ability to show the complex workings of a damaged psychopathic mind; in only 17 minutes! I have watched hour long documentaries on the subject that dont even scratch the surface in comparison to your work. If the power brokers in Hollywood werent themselves, variations of Cyrus, this short would be nominated for an Oscar. And Dust. this one is over the top fantastic, keep them coming.

One sci-fi trope that I know is necessary for the purposes of drama but that increasingly annoys me is the lack of any progress in the future in the 'human condition'. For some time now we have been learning at an extremely rapid pace how to treat the brain to rewire our most primordial negative patterns of behaviour, with technologies like magnetic, electrical, light and sound stimulation of the brain. Some neuroscientists are now saying there appear to be no limits to neuroplasticity. Psychedelic research is starting up again. So they should be MUCH better at creating psychologically healthy and happy humans in a few decades IRL, but in sci-fi, no matter how far in the future you go, people are as screwed up as ever.
P. S. this trope increasingly annoys me because I've been getting treated for OCD, addiction and nearly a lifetime of anxiety with a very powerful form of neurofeedback. After less than four months twice a week I can notice substantial changes in my feeling of well-being. Neurofeedback has been around for 50 years, it just has had a hard time getting into the mainstream.

The acting was above average, directing was lacking, and overall staging was good --- however, the storyline is lacking vital points of interest and it dragged on non-informational topics.
To twist it at the end didn't make any logical reasoning from the original storyline and the description given of the film.
I will gather from the explanation about the film that he was caught and put in jail for his unprofessional actions with Alice. An AI of Alice is used to 'correct the correctional officer.
I should not have to read the description to gather this info -- the film has a lot of dragged out scenes that could have told of him being charged and sentenced.
This could be a good film with the right writer(s) and director(s.

Plot-wise, not one of the better Dust movies.
If her memory gets purged while he has to go thru this conversation a thousand times, he's the one who is being punished. The system should rotate him around, or just use an low level AI to repeat the conversation with her.
Secondly, since her memory gets purged, she wouldn't be able to formulate any longterm plan. She would repeat the same tactics with him, and he should have gotten desensitized to them by now.
3rd, the twist at the end invalidates the first 3/4 of the film. Not to mention that he was imprisoned for violation of restraining order, so why is the parole simulation testing whether he could resist the seductions of a sociopathic inmate to let her out

reply

Twist was seen a mile away and makes no sense. I can let wiping the memory bit go for narrative or point reasons. But I can't let that his test is a 4-year long simulation where he is being tempted and manipulated over the course of that 4 years, and then punishing him for failing.
Her, you steal or murder at every opportunity
Him, You have 4 years of on the daily interacting with a person who has a scripted response, you have no choice but to continue to do so, and your dreams will be filled with suggestions, if over the course of 4 years, you fail once while being prodded along, we will start the process over
Sorry, kinda dumb.

That was awsome! I loved the concept it was just great.
And the acting was great both characters played their roles very well! She was great at the sorta crazed yet sane look where she knew she was in control.
Would love to see an idea like this turned into a full length film!
The idea of a simulated rehabilitation was pure genius and has a lot of potential. All in all one of my favorites that I have seen so far!

reply

I think that memory of the simulation is like being at school and taking a test. You aren't made to forgot the content of the lessons you have been given the opportunity to have learned, just the answers to the final exam. Except it's related to personality; if your personality and thus outlook changes sufficiently, so that you stop committing the crimes that the test is designed to exposed, you pass and are set free.

Figured it out a bit early, but that didn’t take away from how much I enjoyed this. What a great story - with excellent actors. Alice really had me believing she was a sociopath - chilling. It did seem unfair that he had hundreds of iterations before he failed/had his memory wiped, though - he should have been paroled after resisting her the first time.
reply

It's just me or was this a very sensual movie It rocked my world. No cleavage not even an ankle! That hand touching thing gave me chills. Ah maybe I need to be rehabilitated. Good movie, made the best with very simple sets. Good writing. I did notice the sound comments. I was fixated on her voice. Keep it coming.
reply

Speculated early that Cyrus was an AI system that was being evaluated to see how it handled problem cases. If there's technology to interface with a subject's mind, then in that world, it's almost impossible to make the case that oversight would still be handled by a human. But it was fun nonetheless.
reply

This is exactly what I find an interesting concept for a Dust movie, or any sci-fi movie. Rehabilitation vs. personal freedom.
Typing this at 6: 23 minutes in I wonder why they never attempted to adjust Alice's synapses in her brain. It would sure have saved them a simulation run or two.

reply

Maybe I’ve seen tooo many movies to be surprised anymore. I saw the twist from the first interaction. Sorry but it was too predictable. Also, his crime was violation of a restraining order How did his simulation coincide with his crime Bad writing there.
reply

Second time I've watched this one. Interesting idea. I wonder if the outcome could have been altered if some memories were left intact. Doing something over and over in the same way and expecting a different outcome may not be the best approach.
reply

Ugh, I loved this but.
Yall got to work on the sound. I had to turn this one up soooooooo loud. And still had to turn on the subtitles! Then an ad came on and almost busted my eardrums. This is a recurring problem in your videos.

reply

We already live in a world where people are being 'fixed'. However, that seems not to apply to corrupt and sociopathic politicians, corporations, inequality and the widening gap between the rich and poor: no fix for those as yet.
reply

The question is simple. Would you let sociopath/psychopath like TED BUNDY to be running lose in society killing & torturing 17-18 year old girls before being properly corrected WOULD YOU
reply

Wait, so the person doesn’t know they are in jail/the matrix It seems to me the system portrayed here is designed to set a person up to fail.
Anyone else get that impression

reply

Guess whenever they erased the memory when the patients failed the simulation, thats a form of lobotomy. Enough of the memory erased, h/she is just a walking vegetable.
reply

Question is, how can one learn and evolve from mistakes or crimes, if their memory is erased. They'll be doomed to repeat the same thing over and over, without any aid.
reply

For once in my life I figured it out before the twist. I amaze myself! I'm not usually the one who sees it coming. I'm better with wood and brick than movies.
reply

why are translations locked the french one is a real nightmare: lots of inconsistencies and word-to-word translation not taking account expressions
reply

nothing predictable about this short at all just saying. done very well, loved the plot twist at the end, may have to watch again for clues!
reply

Would have been better if the audio volume was louder than the background music. Gave up watching after five minutes due to incoherent audio.
reply

Odd. I had a feeling that that would be the twist. But I thought the conviction would be more similar to the simulation presented.
reply

What scare me about dust is that the sjw seem to become dominant! Sometime i wonder if they get sponsor by tampax!
reply

No twist there. Looking at the thumbnail it was fairly easy to know who was really where.
Still a nice short though.

reply

I like Dust, but I really hate not being able to hear the audio. Very bad audio on so many Dust productions.
reply

This film kept me guessing. I could see a number of possible plot twists, and this was just one of them.
reply

The psychopaths are in control of the corrections system.
Sounds like the present. Reality.

reply

A female Christian Bale! Except with seduction and tears instead of knives and blood
Spoke too soon

reply

Excellent short! Well scripted, acted & edited. Would make a great full length movie too.
reply

She did a good job making me uncomfortable for the entire video. Didn't care for it but she is good
reply

I figured it out before it ended
but that didn't take away from the story's awesomeness.

reply

Why is the sound in so many of these shorts mixed so poorly That aside enjoyable film.
reply

Audio mix could not be much worse. Blow your speakers trying to hear what they're saying.
