A lot of park chess players are actually really good
This is so true.
I studied chess and really, I was unbeatable in the club with bunch of college students like me. My elo is 1600 in FIDE, I'm 2200-2300 on online chess. I felt badass after reading numerous chess books.
Once I came to this old damp cofee shop. I saw 7-10 old man close to their 60s and looked like they barely even studied chess or go to school. I played them all, struggled to win and several times, I lost the game.
Didn't know what happenned though but now, I think it is because old guys really love to talk more than this generation. They love to analyze without using engine, just screwing around and try to play like human, not machine.
And in fact, they all have a good time management, more than me.

Hate to disagree with Levy here, but you may (keyword MAY) need to indicate the rank for queens and (even rarer) bishops. In chess, it is possible to promote a second queen and if they end up on the same file, you may need to indicate the starting rank for which queen moved. Also, it is possible to underpromote to a bishop which, if you have a bishop of the same color, it is possible to need to indicate the rank for which bishop moved, but because of how bishops move and the rarity of ever underpromoting to a bishop when you already have that color of bishop, it's insanely rare. Possible, but rare.

I want to add to the first question about trash talk in chess that in XIX and early XX centuries chess players were notorious trash talkers. Staunton and Saint-Amane were insulting each other in their chess magazines before and after their match, Alekhine and Capablanca had a very infamous feud, there were heated debates about chess openings.
In fact, the only reason why chess trash talk fell out of favor was that between 1945 and 1990 about 80% of top chess players were Soviet and they obviously couldn't do that (even if they wanted.

12: 20 have you ever been interested in trying old games 'recreated' to what people think the rules might have been? I am speaking of a few games like Royal Game of Ur, Senet, Tablut, Nine Mens Morris, Hnefatafl, and possibly others. There are even online computer simulations you can play of some of these.

lol levi didnt know how exactly the elo system works so he just blurted out as many random facts about the elo system as possible without actually answering the question. I dont fault him tho since the match behind it is way to complicated for most people to understand(including me.

On the topic of resigning has anyone ever REFUSED an opponent s resignation?
Like, say the person playing black pauses the clock and extends their hand, then the white player is just like naw, we ain t done here.
That would be amazing if this has actually happened.

You may have to differentiate bishops or queens if you promoted a pawn to either. Now you may have multiple light (or dark) square bishops, or multiple queens, and you may need to disambiguate.
(I know, I know, not likely at all)

Let's not go around and lie about chess and intelligence not having any correlation. I get that this allows more people to get into chess, and I also get that the deciding factor in your skill isn't your intelligence but come on now.

Great to see Levy here again
I'm surprised by the take on Fischer's blunder though, surely he didn't just overlook g3? He just miscalculated the line after that, where it's not so obvious that the bishop really can't be saved?

Levy could've explained the chess engine segment better. For all the programmers out there who play/ interested in chess programming, there is a recent video by Bartek Spitza. That video is amazing

When I saw the most famous move question, my first guess was Paul Morphy's final Rook move in the 'Opera Game', and my second guess was Bobby Fischer blundering his Bishop against Spassky.

Congrats on the GM title. My stepson and I both listened to your first interview on our own and now we both are into chess and play each other. Fun way for us to connect.

There are other minor patches to chess. According to wiki, the 50 move draw rule was increased some time in the 20th century. It was later reset back to 50 in 1992.

Tip: think, no seriously before making a move geneiunly think about what pieces open up and what pieces get attacked and what not. It helped me improve alot.

Smothered mate is the most satisfying? Sure mating a king who's kissing his homies goodbye is always good, but en passant checkmate. That's the good stuff
reply

I left the video when en passant was mentioned, left to another Levy yt short explaining it, came back, only for it to be explained in the next question
reply

On trash talk, theres also street chess and basically anything out of tournament where there can be loads of trash talk which is fun
reply

what are the different ways children and adults learn chess, just pointing out that a difference exist isn't really a satisfying answer
reply

GUYS the funniest thing in the world just happened at 6: 00 he said hey Siri and my Siri responded and answered the question
reply

Levy I'm disappointed. You didn't say the most satisfying mate was an en passant into a checkmate. I'm very very disappointed.
