Most people know what happened to the Donner Party, a group of settlers led by George Donner and James F. Reed, once they reached Alder Creek, California, in the Sierra Nevada mountains. Members of the party resorted to cannibalism in order to survive after they became trapped by a massive snowfall.

Maybe you should do your research first before making a video. Did you just want another video with wrong information as research? My advise to those reading comments is to do your own research. One example is James Reed, John Snyder was beating oxen, when Reed told him to stop an argument broke out and Snyder struck Reed with the whip, Margret Reed intervened but Snyder began to beat James again and also struck Margret in the head with whip, at that point James pulled out his knife and stabbed Snyder in the chest killing him. This was witnessed by a small part of the party, but others such as Keseberg, who did not witness event wanted to hang Reed. The party then voted and Reed was banished.

It has an eerily familiar vibe to Titanic.
Wealthy businessman ignoring warnings and common sense in the pursuit of personal profit or gain.
Conditions were obviously not favourable but it seems that wisdom, humility and common sense would of gone a long way in preventing this horrible situation from occurring in the first place.
It also didnt help that they allowed themselves to be exploited by Hastings and other business owners along the way. What a disaster.

That is only half the story! It is really interesting when you read about the whole trip. James Reed the one who was made to go off on his own was the one who saved the party! He made it through and sent help, after all his family was still with the party. It really is a fascinating story from start to finish. I've read several books on the story and man is it good reading. Truth is stranger than fiction!

I love your videos, they are direct, factual and to the point! I'm a school counselor who does small group counseling. I am thinking of showing some of your child appropriate videos to my students to help them learn and understand about why people think and act the way they do! How ones upbringing, surroundings, culture, religion, etc affects us socially and emotionally! Thank you! Great content.

Some people are just too gross to eat while others may be flavorful. A suggestion would be to encourage the potential meal to bath in citrus based or other tasty lotions or the like. This should be done as clandestinely as possible. Also encourage the meal to be well rested and relaxed. so as to provide for a delicious meal.

More times than is probably healthy I've thought about if I were boiled in a pot how much of me would turn to liquid fat and how much would be solid meat but also I've told my husband he can eat everything but my face cuz he had to leave my face alone ironically cuz it's my bread and butter

I laughed so hard this story when I'd first heard of it in elementary school. I laughed harder in high school. In college, fellow classmates and I shared some chuckles, as did the professor, as we all were on the same page about this. I'm giggling a bit as I type this.
Eff those guys.

I live in far Northern California and Ive been up in the Sierra Nevadas many times. If youve ever been in the high Sierras youll know why the Donner Party was in such dire circumstances over winter. This past winter 2021-2022, there was a record high of 18 feet of snow fall on Donner Pass.

Actually mules were very valuable in the old west. Partly because they can survive on most anything and were needed to get out of there. They likely taste like horse, which is a sweet meat. I have a mule, pretty amazing animal. Even act as perimeter defense if they are bonded to you.

Whenever somebody even mentions the Donner party everybody breaks out the cannibalism jokes. This has always bothered me. I don't think people would be so cavalier about it if they happen to be starving themselves with no other alternative. Read the diaries they left behind.

why would you leave the ochsen in the desert to die? one ochsen can provide food for so many people! you can use pretty much everything off that animal for nutrition, even boiling the carcass for a healthy soup. they must have known that, didn't they? Darwin award calling!

Travel tip. Whenever you travel, bring along a person or persons you would be willing to sacrifice and eat if it became necessary. The number of such potential person meals depends on the length of and distance traveled to and on said trip.

I automatically thought, 'wait, what? No food? ' I'm a Native guy and I happen to know everything one needs in order to survive is right here, or was here before white folk killed everything! But yeah, what a buncha dumbasses.

The last name of one of the surviving family's was Rambo, great great grandparents of John J. Rambo. They were trained to ignore the weather, ignore pain and would eat things that would make a billy goat puke.

I want to hear more about the cannabilism. Was the meat fried? Stewed? Maybe seared on an open fire then slow cooked to perfection until the meat just fell off the bone? Hmmmm. now I want to eat someone.

No mention of the Native American Indian guides or the cabin encampments they had to build for winter whilst others attempted to climb a Pass to get help. It was later named Donner Pass.

Doesnt make sense about the guy being accused at the post for not giving out the letters to the Donners at the time because how would he know unless he read the letters sent to the Donners

regardless where we live now in any country on this earth. it took the backs / hearts and lives of others to bring about the 'luxuries' we take for granted now in our time.

Apparently James Reid didn't just attack that guy because he was whipping cattle, the guy apparently whipped Reid's wife by accident. Might better explain why Reid snapped.
