In 1955 the Maltese government asked to be incorporated into the United Kingdom as its fifth constituent nation. As you'll be aware, that never happened and Britain refused to annex the Mediterranean island. But why? Well, find out by watching this short and simple animated documentary

My late father was based on Malta at times, while serving as an officer on HM Submarine TORBAY during WW2, and was lucky to survive, as T-Class submarines were easy to see in the Mediterranean. . Malta suffered terribly in WW2, and although I have never visited Malta, I honour their people, and their history. . The only island to be awarded the George Cross.

Spain and Argentina must be so infuriated by all these British holdings that the UK just backs away from. Malta and Hong Kong, but oh no Gibraltar and the Falklands can't be given up. It's kind of a dig at the countries, like even in its weakened state the United Kingdom still feels it can push around Spain and Argentina.

When you say country asked to be annex it sounds wrong. What do you mean? Do you mean what country wanted to be part of bretain, but is it true? If majority really wanted to be annexed it would be annexion, although if 10% percent what it - proppaganda offen make it seams that WHOLE country what it, but it's not true.

This is very interesting but the Surname is pronounced Borch like porch with a B and a bit more of a separate but soft r or like Borge like George with a b, not a criticism though, i know Maltese surnames can be hard to pronounce if you aren't one, people have gotten my one quite wrong sometimes (Cassar.

Being ruled by traitors who deliberately didn't want our country to be great. London claimed the couldn't afford to keep the Emirates, then the Emirates offered to pay for their own defence and London still left, this time not even bothering to come up with an excuse.

Like many parts of the British Empire, Malta cost money to maintain seems like an odd thing to say. I'm pretty sure Britain gathered and kept their colonies primarily to increase Britain's own wealth. Whatever costs there were, there was also a net profit.

Why didnt it become a British Oversea Territory like Gibraltar then? I didnt understand about this because UK has dozens of oversea territories instead of entity annexed to their country proper unlike the French and the Dutch

Considering how things played out for both countries eventually, I'd say it worked out relatively well like this anyway. Imagine being Maltese and suddenly having to go through Brexit.

Which is why my ex-girlfriend is my ex-girlfriend and not my wife. After she spent all of her money, she expected me to bail her out of her excessive spending habits. Not gonna happen.

An alternate post war world where all the former colonies get 'annexed' and start sending MPs to Westminster (basically Chamberlain's Imperial Unity) is a fascinating idea.

Wasn't aware of this and is very interesting. Seems the people of Malta were a lot smarter than most of the other colonies crying out for self determination.

No doubt if it happened the native Maltese would have been priced out of the island when hordes of British pensioners move their to retire pushing house prices up

I dont think the UK minded Malta to join, adding an extra 300k people to the population would have been peanuts. But there were other countries the UK did not want

Lesson learned: to get independent you have to be the only one who doesn't fight for independence, and after the other fights culminate claim independence

It would set a precedent for other imperial territories. I feel like that wouldn't be the worst thing in the world for the declining empire.

I think of it as Malta's declaration of dependence HAHA
Dude, I miss those silly phrases at the end of videos, bring them back: (

at the country bar
Mongolia: What happened with you?
Malta: I got rejected in a club.
Mongolia: Ah I can relate.

reply

Land: Exists
UK: It's free real estate
Land: Asks to be annexed
UK: Because you asked now I'm not going to do it

reply

Britain would be so much more relevant if we'd accepted Malta, much like the US Britain had no idea what it was letting go

You can (if you want of course) make a video about how the Bulgarian government in 1970 asked the USSR to annex Bulgaria.
