In this project I will be solving a problem that I had for a while. Since I love listening to music I always miss the doorbell. That is a big problem for me because there is always a postman at the door trying to deliver the components for the next project. So in this video I will show you how to add an ESP8266 to an intercom so that it can send WhatsApp/Telegram notifications to a phone. This way I and maybe you will never miss the doorbell again

If you think about it, this solution is quite overkill for its purpose. I mean, there is a complex microcontroller attached to the door bell which can do all kinds of tasks, but is only programmed to look for a voltage change. Then it uses highly complicated internet potocols to send a message to the Telegram servers which do all kinds of complex processing and database management on their end, and in return send a message to an equally complex smartphone running the Telegram app. There are sooo many complex technologies and dependencies involved in this solution, just to extend the door bell into your room. Wouldn't a simple wire from the door bell through the floor into a beeping circuit in your room be sufficient? This solution wouldn't even have any noticeable delay, and it would continue to work during a Telegram or internet outage.

I couldn t get to set up my esp8266 and esp32 running on my Arduino ide even after installing Python 2. 7. 3 and pyserial from adafruit. I have downloaded the drivers and installed the board in Arduino ide. The port is com 28 and I think I used nodemcu 1. 0 module 12E for esp8266 or there about! ( I am using CP2102 chip) The device manager shown that the hardware was properly installed and ready to use. If I try to open the serial monitor in Arduino it will never open, instead I will see error com port 28 busy If I upload code on the boards it pops out bunch of errors among which is error opening serial port or something like that.
I am frustrated, I need help please!

A lot of apartments around me in the US have really analog systems with terminals by TekTone. They have a dedicated wire for the warble tone when the doorbell is pressed. So I put a current-transformer around that and use it as an input in ESPHome, which works reliably. And I figured out what terminals to connect to trigger the door strike and connected a relay to them. It works really well and doesn't even require soldering since all the connections are at the screw-terminals.

Now that is really cool, i might try this myself. I often have full over-ear headphones on, and so miss parcels. Ive actually taken to opening my CCTV on my laptop and leaving it in the corner of the screen just so i can visually see if anyone is at the front door while im working with music etc. Your right this is a solution everyone needs in the modern world. Could box it as a product and market it.

I'm so sorry for you having that intercom. Those things have become a personal nightmare over the past few years.
Also
I've seen a lot of people do something like this.
BUT From the perspective of the guy searching an entire apartment building for whatever causes the intercom system to stop working.
Always again fun.

Very cool project with many practical applications. One thing that would concern ) me (as a homelabber) is I would prefer a self-hosted solution, that way if internet is down, or services change, shut down etc, my solution is resilient and does not rely on a 3rd party.

Definitely considered this. Especially a system that I could text to, and have it trigger the door latch button for me. But man, if you short or fry something, what a mess! Those systems are ancient, and finding a new main board would be crazy expensive!

Back in the day a common solution to this particular problem was to wire up a lamp to the doorbell. No need to mess with any phones and messaging services - esp. when the target audience isn't a young engineer but a grandma who is hard of hearing!

As a landlord myself, I would strongly recommend using an optocoupler. These intercom systems are not as stable as you would think. The connected ground and the y capacitor in your smps are some troublemaker.

Hey, just wanted to know if you talked to your landlord and for what did you ask? I want to the same at my apartment, but I have no idea on how to approach my landlord for something like that.
