Why do you even need the relay? Couldnt you have the same capacitive charge setup but then have the capacitor voltage fed to a parallel P and N fet. The P fet has the startup resistor Im series and the N fet has nothing in series. At the start the P fet is active and feeds current through the resistor and the N fet is open. After the cap charges the p fet opens and the n fet closes to have the low resistance during drive.

The relay power could be reduced by a CR network in series (or better, by a capacitive boost to a higher voltage relay) Trying to remember the circuit from a book, which threw a charged capacitor in series to pull in a relay rated for 2x supply voltage, which then held using less power - that also demands a sharp switching action so would not work with the slow ramp drive to the mosfet

I know this is an older video but could you help me out? We have a bath tub that also has water jets, nowadays if we turn on the jets the residual current device trips and all our power goes out. This didn't happen like a year ago, could it be that a soft starter has failed or something completely else?

Interesting idea - I did something very similar to soft-start a car audio capacitor to stabilize my ham radio power supply. I just used the relay pull-in voltage to regulate when it turned on the relay though, seemed to be good enough and eliminate the majority of the spike.

Nice video but wouldn't it be better to take the voltage for the timing circuit from the output of the resistor so that the voltage drop actually feeds into the rise time of the circuit? Then if the input capacitors are still filling it will not prematurely close the relay?

In the old days, there was a special large mechanical relay that had two or more poles, and it's contacts throw could be adjusted independently. The first contact to make a contection had the current limiting resistor, the second contact would them bypass the resistor.

This may be a dumb question, but why do you need the relay? The MOSFET is a switch that you are using to turn on the relay, which is another switch. Why not just use the MOSFET and eliminate the relay? What does the relay do that the MOSFET cant do alone?

Btw, I didn't already watched the video, but if you want Soft Start board, try to look after some old canister vacuum cleaner, pretty much every vacuum like that have soft start, and some of them also have soft start and regulator.

Greatscott you changed the main function of that inverter. If it's viable for use you should contact companies and get your device made by them while you collect Royalties. Contact me theforgetfulbuddha you made a nee device.
