Ahimsa silk is the several names for silk made from empty cocoons after the moths have already emerged, though its twice as expensive as regular silk, since the yield is 90% lower and farmers have to wait ten days longer before they can harvest it. Some people also claim that ahimsa silk lacks some of the desirable qualities of traditional silk, such as its texture being more rough, though I dont know if someone unaccustomed to silk in general would be able to feel any difference between the two.
Its also really hard to find reputable, non-biased information about weather or not ahimsa silk truly IS cruelty-free, since Im not sure what happens to the moths after they emerge. Ive seen a few claims that the majority of the adult moths are culled to keep the population from reaching unmanageable levels. Neither can I find much info about what the labor conditions are like for people working in the industry, so there could potentially be a good deal of human suffering involved, as is sometimes the case for cruelty-free products.

I feel like it'd be easier to find a way to harvest the unbroken silk without killing the moths than it would be to develop our own synthetic silk. Imagine how much more silk would be produced if you didn't have to sacrifice potential parent moths that could make the next generation of silkworms.

I met a silk moth once. I was working in an office with a Lab in Bristol CT USA. I went to let it outside and it just stayed on my hand, letting the breeze run through its antennae. It was the cutest friendly creature. I wish they were everywhere. Wonder how it ended up there if they can't fly.

I love the legend behind how silkworm cultivation began: Thousands of years ago, the Empress of China was enjoying tea in her garden when a silkworm cocoon fell into her tea. The heat of the tea unraveled the cocoon, allowing the silk to be collected. The rest is history!

TIL that we f'ed up a bug. Took a perfectly good camouflaged moth that could fly and turned it into a white, flightless behemoth (hehe. Seriously, was no one gonna ever tell me that we domesticated a moth? Thats pretty cool, tho of course, kinda bad for the moth/silkworms.

The truth is, is we would be better off with moths and butterflies in the planet again. When was the last time anyone seen a butterfly or moth? What happened to them. We killed them all off in our pursuit of money. F HUMANITY.

I'm happy to say I have never bought anything made of silk. I have only one present that was a silk blanket. Other than that my hands are free from this tragic crime against nature.

I wanted to learn more about silkworms and not to watch them being boiled alive as a part of their fascinating relationship between insects and humans. Exploitation is not relationship.

i can kinda accept the fact that most dont get to grow up
only bc adult moths just reproduce and then basically starve to death bc they cant eat without a proper mouth.

I wonder how they survived prior to human evolution if they were so feeble and delicate that they rely on us now a days? How did they survive before and without us if so?

Silk is discovered by the wife of the Yellow Emperor. At that time, she is into weaving and hence, silk clothing is discovered too.

To be fair all that food the larvae get to eat probably makes up for them no getting to live a couple days as an adult anyway.
