Time for another break from our ongoing series to bring you the second episode of Crash Course Recess! This time, we share the story of Jeremy Bentham, a 19th-century English philosopher and co-founder of utilitarianism. More importantly - the story of his corpse! If you caught the first one earlier this year, then you-ll know that our Recess episodes are all about finding a fascinating story related to past or current Crash Course subjects that weren-t covered in the main shows, and giving them their own short, fully-animated standalone episode. So kick back, relax, and enjoy a quick Recess!

Tom Scott also did a video on Bentham. As a former UCL student its rather nice to see him get some more love. The theft of his head was the culmination of a series of kidnappings between UCL and King's College London (their mascot is a metal lion, now filled with concrete to discourage theft- which didn't work, UCLs is a six foot wooden highlander that itself nicked from outside a tobacconists.

I love this idea, and have followed it as much as is possible in my life. I am an organ donor for every reason available (organ transplant and all forms of scientific research, and I hope every piece of me is used so there isn't even enough left to cremate. I won't be using the body anymore so someone else might as well use it. I would HATE my corpse to be a waste of space in a graveyard.

By 0: 13 I already knew what this video was gonna be about.
I didn't watch the rest of the video, but I did check the description to make sure I was right.
AskaMortician already did an video on Bentham. (Bentham's head -)

When I worked at UCL I was told that at administrative meetings Jeremy Bentham is a tie breaking vote, and always votes in favor of the policy that represents change. I guess this is wrong?

It would be amazing if you did a Crash Course of death positivity and the history of cultures around death. Caitlin Doughty would be an amazing teacher and makes the subject entertaining.

I know that it-s kinda screwed up to kidnap someone-s mummified head, but I think Bentham would be proud that his desiccated cranium is being used to raise money for good causes.

I love the philosophy of death, influenced me to try to create my own philosophical field of thought. Freedom is freedom fro fear of Death.

Good point; who knows, those pesky maggots and microbes might steal your prized valuables from your person if you-re buried!
