In our final episode of Crash Course Philosophy, we consider what it means to live a good life. We-ll look at the myth of Sisyphus, Robert Nozick-s experience machine, Aristotle-s eudaimonistic picture of a good human life, and the existentialists- view that we each determine the value of our own lives. And we-ll think about how you, too, can live the life of a philosopher

Nearly everyone has a great respect for philosophy, as if it was something superior, and that the philosophers are really -wise- men, and possessed real wisdom, while in reality, they are only what the word -philosopher- means - the -lover of wisdom-, and anyone who loves -wisdom-, can be called a philosopher!
The truth is, that, while the writings of Cicero, Seneca, Aurelius and others are pleasurable to read, admiring their astonishing way of thinking, in reality, all that philosophical thinking is completely useless and pointless.
That's why Socrates, the wisest of the wise, was so great, by facing and admitting the truth, saying: - -I know that I know nothing-!
In another way, Solomon has said the same at the beginning of the Book of Ecclesiastes: - -Life is useless, all is useless. It is all vanity and in vain. -.
The same has said Schopenhauer: -- -The vanity of existence is revealed in the whole form existence assumes: - in the infinity of time and space, contrasted with finiteness of the individual in both. Time and that perishability of all things existing in time. the will to live. reveal the vanity of its striving. Time is that by virtue of which everything becomes nothingness in our hands and loses all real value-.
--- Would you see any sense to take the wise advice of philosophers, on how to live to have a happy life, to the inmates on the death row, which already lost ALL appeals, and their execution is absolutely inevitable?
All of us are on the same situation, are we not?

Ever since I was a kid i'd been having existential thoughts which I grew up to understand as philosophy. At the time I thought that the way I was thinking was sacred and only I have ever been about to think the way I was because i'd never heard someone else talk about it and none of my young friends could even fathom what I was on about. I had gotten to the point where I felt like a higher being and I already thought about and understood almost every topic covered in this series before watching it, I always wished that one day i'd come across something consumable which taught me all of these thoughts like a book or series. When I realised it was called philosophy and it is actually a highly studied area which I could learn myself I was overjoyed and only now have gotten around to watching the whole series and I feel so satisfied with my philosophical understanding. Thank you for making this series so good, I will go on to have an interest in philosophy for the rest of my life

So, I-m just genuinely curious because I haven-t read any Camus, but by his philosophy (as this video made it sound anyway, did Hitler supposedly lead a -good life, - because it was one in which he did succeed in finding meaning in eradicating those of a -despicable race and culture-? I-m not condoning his actions, obviously, but I just was wondering how Camus would view that dilemma. I get the feeling that maybe Camus- whole thoughts on the topic weren-t shared (which of course, is fine - once again, I-m just curious.

Yes to the experience machine. What if I've always wanted to sky dive and that would make me feel complete but I'm scared and the experience machine helps my fears so i can do the sky dive or feel more complete after virtually doing it and it feeling real to me

So, 46 episodes and 2500 years later and still no definite answers. That tells me there are no answers. If there are no answers, then arguing over them is kind of pointless. So long philosophy.

I know I-m 3 years late, but THANK YOU for these videos! I watched all of them in one day, and an interest in philosophy has been sparked that otherwise would have never been acknowledged.
