Between the electoral college and gerrymandering, you can become president of the US with less than 20% of the popular vote, if you get exactly the right people to vote for you. Popular vote is definitely the way to go, maybe even with multiple rounds if no candidate gets over 50%. Low population states are already overrepresented in congress anyway.

This is one of many reasons that originalism is nonsense. The founding fathers weren't infallible, and their designs were never meant to be permanent institutions. We have 25 amendments as evidence, yet somehow we consider the electoral college (and the senate) sacrosanct.
The electoral college and the senate are the original gerrymander.

It's not broken, it works as intended is a bit like saying This bucket with a hole in the bottom isn't broken, just look, the handle on the bucket is a bright friendly yellow just like it should be.
I can point to one particular way in which you can say, this aspect of it is not broken is not sufficient to justify saying It is not broken.

So in theory, if a group of people, or just one rich con-man, could convince’ enough of these electors’ to vote for whoever they want in, and not what the people want, that person could get in
Good thing we don’t have anyone who would/could do that.

While u fix the electoral college - how about also fixing gerrymendering, votersurpression, let all states a vote, vote on a holiday and do whatever is needed so ppl dont have to stand in line - in short, get a propper democracy like in europe.
reply

Sorry! I only accept the exact same electoral college conversation we have every year there’s a presidential election at the time of that presidential election.
It’s like Christmas music in June, man.

reply

Keep the Electoral College but divvy out the Electoral Votes for each state proportionally based on the popular vote for each state.
Importantly, this includes 3rd party candidates.

reply

Thank you as always!
Im hoping we can maybe talk about rank choice voting next time too
Or maybe a separate video
Either way, appreciate the whole teams work, thank you

This must be such a hard series to create because it's like so here's the facts and what actually happened and if you like Trump, you're going to think this has a liberal bias.
reply

I think what the problem is, is that when a set of rules exists for too long without receiving any major changes, people begin to get GOOD at gaming the system to their benefit.

The electoral college made sense when it was founded. But technology has fixed the issue. We can easily count votes, now. We could even just be sent a passcode to vote online.
reply

It's one of those things that made sense when the sum total of your communications technology was horse, man on. This has not been the case for ages though.
reply

My impression of the electoral college is that it is the same as Whose Line Is It Anyway because, everything's made up and the points don't matter
reply

Thank you! There's not enough readily available, clear, and concise education about this. So many people think they understand but have 0 clue.
reply

I love that the title asks is the Electoral College broken As if there's something in American politics that isn't broken
