Sounds like episode 7 is going to be another episode that's going to tear at me lol With great power also comes great responsibility. Much was lost, destroyed, stolen and mishandled for so long. Modern technology and understanding can help recover some of that.
I constantly think of the work of Elder Ed Carriere using knowledge from his grandmother to study and recreate baskets recovered during archaeology. His life story is amazing. That is how it needs to be done. We can put a date on time immemorial of being at least 22, 000 years, so suck it Rome lol We can roughly date stories of floods that created various tribes today to around 7, 000 years ago and literally verify location etc. 7, 000 years ago a thrush washed his face to marry a human; )

Wow, the story of the Peacemaker is exactly like the story in The Secret History of Mongols! There, Queen Aliungoo (Chinggis Khan’s ancestor) teaches her five children the importance of unity by breaking a single arrow and showing that 5 arrows wouldn’t break as easily. There are so much fascinating similarities between Mongolian culture and native American culture from shamanism, myths, games and stories. We also have the exact same saying, Laughter is the best medicine!

The sense of community definitely feels like the antithesis of rightwing values of self reliance, and the view of community weakening the individual. As well as how love is conditional as soon as a kid is out as gay, theybare abandoned. Thinking of one's self interest is what's considered as good and essential to society not me helping out other people. Particularly in objectivism.

It’s refreshing when a platform like this is used to pretty unequivocally condemn fracking. The damage it does to lands and the health of the people who live there is horrible, and it feels like it’s rare to see that harm addressed in politics or education.
Crash Course getting Che Jim for this series was the best thing they’ve ever done.

Reservation Dogs is hands down one of the greatest television shows I’ve ever watched, outrageously funny, relatable, and emotional. So glad I could watch that show
Rutherford Falls was funny too, I wish it didn’t get cancelled, ended on some cliffhangers

My grandfather used to go down to watch the stickball games purely to watch people get into fights. Onlookers, players, passers by - anyone who wanted a piece of the action. Think a British Football match, but on the rez. With sticks.

I loved Reservation Dogs, I don’t think I laughed that hard in a while watching that series. It was special seeing a First Nation centered show get that big, the actors were spectacular.
This was a fantastic video, I learned a lot

reply

gosh I just wanna give you all a hug---thank you so much for the series (from the grandchild of a Cherokee survivor of residential school); one question, why wasn't this the first video lol

Years ago I was on an archaeological dig in SE Indiana and found a chunkey stone, a game used to help with hunting skills. It gave me a look into a world 400 years before I got there.

Yo this dude might be Superman, I didn’t recognize him in these videos because he’s wearing glasses and no hat, but when he showed clips of his tiktok videos I recognized him instantly

Very cool. And hopefully the beavers end up returning one day! I remember hearing about them around Los Gatos and Palo Alto a bit recently.

unfortunately, the oppressors are notoriously humorless,
and usually react badly, sometimes v. e. r. y. badly, to being mocked.

reply

I never thought about the stoic native stereotype. I think there is also the medicine man stereotype and the nature person stereotype.
reply

My great grandmother would say bury anything you find. That generation was solidly opposed to excavation and extraction of artefacts
reply

Huh. A humour system with a large component of taking the piss out of folk. Suspect you may get along with the Scots really well.
