Never seen anyone put in a new transmission they bought. Around here we have a very good, popular transmission shop. They can tear that tranny out, rebuild it inside top to bottom to almost bullet proof. Then, put it back in and drive it out of the shop in around 4 hours or so. Dudes are good. Last tranny I had rebuilt they put a shift kit in it so it hit a bit hard but it was totally rebuilt with everything, all the way. Even moved the trans lines off of the radiator into a separate cooler out front for me to keep it running cooler (never saw it over 190 until heavy towing my RV, but averaged around 180 or so normally. And if you felt your oats and punched the accelerator on wet pavement it would rock those tires every shift. lol. That's about all these guys do, though, so they know how to rebuild one right. Of course, they had specialty tools either bought or made to do the job. transmissions were all they did and still do. Glad I didn't have to do it. Last one I pulled was the one I destroyed in my parent's van in 1984. turbo 350. Learned my lesson on flooring it and shifting it into gear. lol. Typical teenager. Destructive until I was made to repair what I destroyed. Taught me one thing major though. take care of your autos and don't be a d ck. Take care.

So true, take your time in getting the tranmission mated just right with the engine dowls and mounts. Another thing to consider is, when bolting the flex plate tot eh torque converter, its best to push the torque converter as far as you can into the transmission pump then look for any space between the flex plate and the torque converter mounting locations. Any space should be shimmed to within 1/8 or so from the rear most position in the pump forward so the center TC shaft is into the pump enough to engage most of the two halves of the connection point of the pump and converter. A trans builder told me once that some converters are not into the pump enough and if not, it causes extra wear on the seal and front bushings of the pump etc. So, 1/8 play from back to front is best. All he used were flat washers. I thought they would need to be all the same weight/thickness but he didn't worry about that he said.

There was a period in the late 90s early 2ks that we could not get a reliable unit from Jasper. We went with a local rebuilder for a few years then jasper come back and made us a deal we could not refuse. But we did stay with the local guy for a back-up. This was a fleet situation and they couldn't keep up, Jasper that is. especially in the winter, our drivers were of a different species! They would spin the tires till they wouldn't spin any more, They would either blow the rear end to to the moon or the trans and sometimes the eng. and burn the truck to the ground, But of coarse it was not their fault, riiiight.

Another great video with another quote that can be advice for life from Mr. O: Don't be a Dingdong.
I will never need to do such work on my cars but there is always so much small stuff in these videos that are great all around tips for life.
In the first video I was really amazed by how you heated up the rusted bolts from the exhaust for just a second and they came right off. Useful to know for the future when I encounter such bolts.
Came here from BigClive when he checked out one of these Astro-Lights and clones of it years ago. Your videos are more than just teaching car-stuff.

Put all the bolts in and you're done. Not quite. Failure to properly set the Torque Converter will lead to premature Transmission failure. The Torque Converter sets into the Pump of the Transmission. If that is set too light - insufficient engagement into the pump and the failure of not only the pump but the Torque Converter will soon transpire. Too much engagement and the Torque Converter/Pump Drive will start eating into the 2nd/OD Drum and generate a TON of metal immediately, thereby causing the Trans to fail before you get it around the block.

Oh dear, he uttered the words Jasper Rebuild. Famous last words. Gonna be honest, they pump out a lot of rebuilds, but their quality of work is really trash, especially with their engine remans. The lost time warrantying one of their products really is not worth it. There are far better rebuild shops here in the USA that have the same or better warranty, with a near the same turn-around time. I only live a few hours away from Jasper and everybody around where I live knows about their Diesel engine rebuilds being complete ass.

Yes Eric I agree I know some people who have pride on a transmission for about a day trying to get it out until they realize that they broke not only the bell housing but also one of the corners off of their block and as far as forcing a transmission back in with the bolts I know of somebody who used all thread one time and busted off their transmission and somebody else I know of also ruin their flywheel because they did not have the torque converter locked in so yeah I agree with everything you said 100%

I should be commenting more. Hi Mr. O and family. I m from Missouri. Have always worked on my own cars keeping them going over the years. I have been following and watching for about 5 years now. Have learned so so much from watching you. From simple procedure to inspiring me to want to learn more about electrical diagnostic. Very entertaining to watch you work. Natural teacher. I wish I was your customer! Wishing your family good health and fortune. Can t wait to see the next rust bucket!

South Main Auto What's the deal with GM adding locktite on various engine bolts? Struggling with a harmonic balancer bolt on a gm 3. 5l engine even purchased the worthless flywheel holder specified by AllData to assist with the removal but it doesn't work as result of the bell housing casting shape. It doesn't permit the insertion of the tool under half of the flywheel as result of this obstruction. Not a fan of the TTY bolts either always snapping increasing teardown time.

Many many years ago i did a tranny in a chevy with the SB 350 and on the install I failed to get the wiring harness that use to run along the back of the engine block out of the way and pinched it in the bell housing and cracked the case, was a learning experience as I had to, with no experience, transfer all the internals from the cracked case to a new case, was 16 or 17 so this was back in the mid 80's, doesn't look a whole lot different after all these years.

And, speaking of getting high. you're getting older (but still look real fit. Does brake clean and carb clean smells give you a headach, or bug you more than it did when you were younger. Man, if I'm in a closed garage, I have about 5 minutes max before I need air, and start getting a headache now. Gas and desil and other things don't bug me. Just brake clean, and even more so carb clean - and it's a drag because I love using brake clean!

I got a 1996 C3500 that could probably use a 4L80E. But man oh man, I'd never get that done on the ground at my age! lol You make it look easy peasy!
I'll keep nursing the ole blister along 'till she won't go any more. 150K on it and still hammering along at 11. 2 mpg! lol
I'd love to know more about that Mobile 1 ATF. The rebuilder thinks a lot of it if they insist on it for warranty purposes.

Drawing a transmission in with the bolts is a dumbass moves you will bust the front pump transmission should slide in and go flush with a little bit of a persuasion by wiggling it that's my advice to anyone and I'm changing up in the 4l60e's and my lifetime working the transmission shop they can be difficult at times as long as you get them lined up like Eric said they will go in

Loving this series man. Just picked up an old 2004 Silverado 4x4 for 3k. It's a project (and a major rust bucket, but it's my first pickup so I'm happy with it (I've only ever owned small 4 bangers. Just finished doing the knock sensors, fuel pump, front struts and starter today. Noticed a few chipped teeth of the flexplate, so this series is right on time. Keep it coming brother!
